Samsung's 80-inch plasma for a mere $150,000
So Samsung is busting out the largest purchasable plasma display for those of you with 150 grand burning a hole in your pocket and a really, really large wall to put this in front of. They're targeting artsy institutions but we just know somebody is going to be watching the super bowl on this baby come February—so feel free to invite your friendly neighborhood Engadget staff member, okay? We really don't need very many excuses to desire an 80-inch plasma, (let's think: 80-inch? Check. Plasma? Double check.) but just in case you did need some greater purpose behind your longings, how about the fact that it does 1080 HD capability and has a 2000:1 contrast ratio? Yeah, okay, you get back with us on that.

WOW! I wouldn't mind one of thoses.... but the chances of it falling off the back of a lorry and me finding it is slim to none. *sigh*
Only $150K for an 80"? That my entire annual net income! I'll wait for the price to come down or I'll just get another 50" for about 6Gs... Oh yeah, Good Guys is going out business, I might be able to get a deal.
I wanna play some games on that thing. with a badass surround sound set as well. mmmmmm
I want one!
Oh, the display is nifty too.
The only problem is that it would only last for a year or so before you had to replace it; even less if it was in an artsy place where the image was the same. Plasma screens have problems with "burn in" and eventually images get burned into the screen and they have to be replaced. At my work, in less than a year our plasma screen started to have certain TV logos burned into the corner because the TV was usually on one of the 24-hr news channels.
How many years ago was that, Andrew? Plasmas haven't had that problem in a while now.
SharpieFiend - What do you mean that plasmas haven't had that problem in a while now? What technology has been implemented to prevent burn in?
But as a side note, you can actually correct some problems with burn in by displaying pure black for a while over the whole screen.
One would like to think that Samsung would do their best such that a 150K plasma would have all possible preventive technology built in to avoid "burn-in". But honestly, the depreciation of the damn thing makes it just a monetary black hole, unless it comes with the display models...
i live in helsinki, and in the biggest, most well known store there was that tv selling for 99 thousand euros.. that's about 120 thousand $.. it was pretty sweet in real life!!!
For $150 Grand, the girls better come with the screen!
No one walking around with extra $150G's ain't gonna watch the Superbowl in this thing, they're actually going to ATTEND Superbowl itself and be in the stadium fo rell? Yeah I hurrd all ya'll, those bitches better come wif the damn TV yo, even for at least 30 days and be ready for some bukkake. Haha!
For $150,000, you can throw a monster Super Bowl party at the stadium itself, then still have more than enough left over for a Sony 55" Plasma.
Why do I look at those girls and immediately think of the "Will It Float?" skit on Letterman? That would be the most expensive "Will It Float?" ever...
I'll skip the screen and just take the girls.
For the fraction of the price, you can have a 1080p front projector that will throw a much bigger and theater like picture than that ?
And for the rest of us, there are now really good 720p front projectors starting in the $2000 range (Panasonic PT-AE900U, Sanyo LP-Z4, ...). These will throw you a stunning image as big as 200" if you want (100"-120" is more the norm at that price given the light output)
That's home theater, plasmas and LCDs are just TVs.
Just get a projector instead. Decent ones run <$1000. I paid $1600 after rebate for mine and have 112" (and could've made it bigger). True I do have to have the room darkened some (or at least make sure there's no light shining on the screen)...but it's a GREAT HDTV picture and didn't cost me anywhere near $150,000.
Hahaha. I stoopid American. I will pay for dat wiff my cwedit cod.
#7 "What technology has been implemented to prevent burn in?"
Would this be pixel-shifting? or is that only on LCDs? There is definately such tech in existence.
*Zoom*
...Yeah, the left one is definitely cuter.
Won't the pixels on this thing be pretty big, though? Such that the quality might not be all that great?
Kind of like a 17" LCD @ 1280x1024 and a 19" @ 1280x1024.
