The iPod (with video)
Here it is, official pics and specs of the new video-enabled iPod: it's the same width and height as the current mode, but thinner. It has a 320 x 240 pixel, 2.5-inch, 260,000 color display, 20 hours of battery life, and supports playback of H.264 and MPEG4 at 30 fps. Has TV out and will come in both 30GB and 60GB versions, with the 30GB version being 31% thinner than the current 20GB iPod and the 60GB version being 12% thinner than the current 20GB iPod. The 30GB will hold up to 75 hours of video and retail for $299. The 60GB version will hold 150 hours of video and sell for $399. Both will ship in one week.

That's hot. Maybe now I can finally get my nano now that the attention is somewhere else...
itms now open
Good thing I waited, but hopefully it won't succumb to the first generation kinks (but it probably will.)
we wants it... the precious...
That looks awesome, I need one!
Eff! My nano's looking somewhat less desireable now.
I want word on the usual pet peevs though, gapless or anything exciting like that?
This was so close to making me regret buying the nano, except for a few issues:
1) No Widescreen
2) Low Resolution (QVGA) on the downloadable music videos/tv shows
3) A limit on the resolution of the videos you're importing - what kind of limit is 480x480??
20 hours?
My question is: How much will we have to spend to buy the video's for this IPod? I mean, it will most likely have to be a seperate video and will have to be able to uploaded to IVideo or something similar. You know as well as I do that this is just an opening for Apple to broaden it's market for specific programs (IVideo?), videos (.ivid[format for IVideo files]?), etc. Good idea, super costly in the long run.
how about the headphone jack? was the audio quality improved?
That's the sexy.
It just looks all fat now.. I guess the nano spoiled us.
Will there be a remote?
Will this be better than the Gigabeat X30?
the only way the market could compete with this marvelous product is maybe by having a similar product that has a bigger screen, supports more video formats and can also, like the ipod, play MP3's
alas, no such products exist.
And I decide to wait a week for the new one.
My 30gb iPod photo broke, would it be possible to get it replaced with a 30gb 5g, since it has a warranty until March 2006?
>>Ben
You can put h264 encoded videos in an avi wrapper. Its the same thing as divx as I understand it.
I just ordered one...i returned my nano once i heard the rumors...and it was worth it...here's something for everyone that doesn't care that much about the video functionality...bigger screen for photos...and a much smaller size and an added 10 gigs at the current 20 gig price...I say no matter how you slice it, its a great buy...
does anyone know of any time of "scam" where you can take back the regular 4g, and get a new one. because they are selling this as their regular ipod, $299, so i would like to upgrade.
Ordered. :)
Re: #10
You mean like the PSP?
The sad part about the PSP is the lack of a hard drive (or flash drive). Otherwise, it would compete and excel on all levels. And it's cheaper.
Itunes 6 now running... wheels turning...
Now, how about ipod video playback through my Alpine IVA-d310 in-dash monitor. The frontrow dock is universal across the ipod line... even with video... but will the Alpine KCA-420i adapter allow the audio and ID3 tags as well as the video now to my monitor... or is it going to require a d310 firmware update? :( sigh... probably. This must be solved... with auto-syncing video podcasts and tv show downloads, this will solve the problem of never having enough regular content for your rear seat passengers... Kids get bored of the same old 6 dvd's that you've been carrying around in your car. How easy this integration would make things.
Who do you think will partner up to fight Apple on this one... Sony and MTV... ooh, how about Luxpro and TiVo. Where you at LifeDrive? You should be all over this too. What? Palm won't let you out to play until Cobalt is unleashed in fall of two thousand and never...
Okay what's up with the Macworld article. They're saying that Apple also announced 40 and 80 GB variations of their audio iPod for the same price as the 30 and 60 video respectively?
I haven't found anything else like that. Whack if you ask me. Typo maybe?
http://playlistmag.com/news/2005/10/12/ipods/index.php
It's near the bottom of the article
It's missing the little dingus next to the headphone port. You know, the bit where the iTalk and other accessories plug into. They implied some time ago that they were going to start supporting mic/line in directly on the iPod, but I can't find any mention of that anywhere on the site. Anyone know anything about that?
Where did you order it? Apple.com?
Dangitt i just bought the Nano, and now they come out with this.... What is the return policy for a scratched up nano?
#5. In case you didn't notice, the idea behind a video iPod is not to watch movies, hence the lack of widescreen and the 320x240 screen. The aspect ratio is exactly what it should be for watching TV shows and music videos. I doubt many people want to stare at a screen that small for two hours anyway. I agree though that the 480x480 limit sort of limits the use of its TV-out for watching movies.
Did anyone else notice that the new iPod doesn't use firewire?
no divx/xvid, no sale.
I've been waiting on getting an iPod for one that could store and play videos. Now maybe I'll actually get one. A black one :P
http://www.dapreview.net/comment.php?comment.news.2349
there's some discussion about it on dapreview, but there's no conclusion as far as the recording goes. Hopefully it's there. Hopefully they suprise us with gapless or something exciting like that too!
Only two hours of video playback per charge? Come on, Apple! My 2 year-old RCA PMP gets better battery life than that.
Firewire syncing support? I hope so, but so far none of the specs say anything about it.
Boynamedsue:
Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but there are many, many other options out there that are arguably superior (at least hardware-wise) to the new iPods. For example:
http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product_Id=4054350&JRSource=google.datafeed.CLN+ZENV30GBBK
Apple seems to be (very slowly) becoming a cautious company with the iPod. The Nano was a great idea (maybe not revolutionary, but definitely the best flash player on the market) but the Shuffle, Photo and now the Video don't exactly seem to explode the market like the original iPod did. They're more like incremental improvements. This would be fine except lots of other larger companies with serious R+D budgets (notably Sony and Samsung) are burning the midnight oil to catch up. Also, Apple's proprietary software and codec standards are eventually going to be a real problem (just like they were for the Mac).
Apple still makes superior products, but IMO there's no way their market share is going to hold up. Releasing excellent but rout products like this one isn't going to help matters.
no widescreen on videos? no thanks, apple makes another piece of crap device just to make money. GARBAGE!!! and how does it expect to play h.264 when regular pc's have a hard time???
indeed, that was sarcasm. being an engadget reader it seems like theres a new pvp out on the market every day.
But #24, the Creative Zen Vision is the same 30 GB for $100 more... They're really going to have to rethink that price to compete with the iPod.
And does anyone have any idea if we'll be able to put our own video on this? Even with some kind of 3rd party workaround. If that's the case, then I'm sold. :)
#11 yes that product exists, it's called a Pocket PC. Sure the hard drive isn't as big and currently the cf cards are weighing in at 8gigs but there is soooo much more you can do with a pocket pc (esp with the new jasjar and wizard's)
Hoorah! I for one welcome our new device convergence overlords
Why would you add video (larger files) and take away firewire connectivity? It must be an accessory thing, the serial port looks the same... maybe you can use 3g and 4g firewire cables?
Yep, His Steveness farted, and we all inhaled ...
wachting video on a 2,5 inch screen? even 6 year old pocketPC's have a 3,5 inch screen and can play video too. Only thing in favor of Ipod is the TV-out.
Selling tv shows is a good move, though ... that is going to be huge! (but a bit overpriced if you can download them legally for 10 cent each at http://www.rentmydvr.com ...
Does this one have audio out & (user) replaceable batteries?Wonder if this one's screen will get scratched as easy as the Nano's?
#29: seriously, how can YOU talk all of that garbage? geez.
WHAT!!!?!
There's no power port for headphone jack accessories. That means no current generation iTrips will work and I'll be SOL for a month or so if I want to use my iPod in my car. That also means spending even MORE money on a new iTrip.
The new headphone jack location is stupid. If Apple had any sense they'd put a 4th gen style jack/power plug in the bottom and standard usb2.0/firewire ports in the top.
Looks like a 4G 20GB iPod Color will be the last iPod product I buy. This is hardly an improvement.
Two hours of battery life while watching videos is weak sauce.
http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html
Is it just me, or is it made of THE SAME SUPER-SCRATCHABLE PLASTIC as the iPod nano?
Where did you order it? Apple.com?
Where did you order it? Apple.com?
You guys in the US are so 'return-happy' with products. Where I am, there are stores that will take goods back once used/open when not faulty (and I buy from them reguarly for this reason JUST IN CASE) - but you guys seem to return things to shops for any reason what so ever.
Do they take things back no questions asked? What about if there are marks on the products? If headphones have been used? What happens to them afterwards? Have you ever bought a new product that someone else has returned the day before becuase it doesnt match their toilet seat cover?
Interesting...
LOL....overpriced...overhyped...over everything...how can you be expected to watch those overpriced episodes you bought if the thing only lasts 2 hrs on that tiny screen.
ZEN Vision anyone?
@30 (Jason): video playback is not designed for regular 2h movies. Would you watch a movie on a 2.5" display? Me, no.
Clips, short movies and episodes - I might.
so how long before someone figures out how to force xvid on this bad boy
Who needs Divx/Xvid when you have H.264?
The size of the screen doesn't matter, because it has Tv-Out (anyone wouldn't see a movie in a small screen, even not in a PSP).
But, I think that no widescreen, and TV-Shows only in 320x240 is pretty stupid _
If this thing does not support Firewire, I am going to be one very pissed off shareholder.
The screen's too small for real portable video, but the form factor appeals to those who already have an iPod, and the hard drive capacity is hard to beat. They should have waited to release the Nano after this one, or made the whole front a screen with side mounted controls instead.
Bah. This thing is powerful enough to store and play H.264 videos, which ya know is kinda cool, yet apple still can't muster up gapless playback, crossfading, or a proper audiophile EQ for music?? I thought Jobs said "it's all about the music"?
I'm glad they didn't announce an 80GB with these dimensions or I'd have to upgrade a 2 month old 60GB which is full. I guess I'll wait for the 80GB. Man 0.55inches thick on the 60GB makes my current 60GB feel like a brick. I almost want this now!
@44 then what the hell is the 60gig drive for? music? h.264 indeed.
Well, they blew it. Releasing tv-shows etc in such a low resolution makes it unwatchable on anything other than an ipod video, and there is no point playing it on a TV either, so TV-Out is pointless. I don't have an ipod, I don't intend to buy a video ipod, but I buy songs from iTunes, and I want to buy tv eps from iTunes too, but now there is no point. They should release HD versions of the shows as well as the crippled ones.
Also, Wtf with the screen? Thats just dumb, they should have rearranged it to have the screen sideways (16:9) and had a smaller clickwheel placed off the side. It just makes more sense, since we all know that eventually movies are gonna boom, just like music online, and its gonna be like watching 50% of an already TOO SMALL screen, with huge black lines on the top and bottom.
Dumb Dumb Dumb Dumb DUMB.
32, No Firewire because of the PC markets refusal to adopt the standard. USB 2.0 is not bad.
A lot of people haven't bought an HDTV set yet. Why not just sell those people an iMac? Not that this FrontRow or iPod stuff is HD. Yet.
I'm curious as to who beyond Disney might let Apple sell video for them. Sony? Warners? Not nearly as likely, for their own greedy reasons.
Also released today is the Palm T|X which has a much larger screen at twice the resolution of the iPod video, five hours or more of battery time while watching movies, will play divx/xvid, not to mention that it also has other applications, WiFi for web browsing and email, and it also plays mp3s. The only advantage of the iPod is its capacity, but a 2Gb SD card will hold four or five movies - and of course you can always swap them out using any SD card reader.
It's a nice addition to be able to add music videos to the iPod too, albeit only DRMed ones you have to buy from iTMS.
For awhile you could get videos for free from the iTunes store. I guess that's all gone now, huh?
Are there any other features of the thing besides playing low-res video for only two hours? Anything improved on the audio side?
I guess we'll have to wait for the reviews.
BFD!!!
What happens to the batteries in these things while it's hooked up to a home stereo or car adapter?Does it automaticly go into trickle charge mode or does it continue to drain it as normal?I'd LOVE to download all my CDs into it & be able to hook it up to my home stereo/car stereo but it would be a PITA to have to charge it every couple of days. What if you hook it up to a AC adapter?Does it still drain the battery?Or is that strictly for charging w/o a computer? If it bypasses the internal battery then SOLD!(after I read all the reviews, complaints & find out if the screen scratching problem has been addressed).I'm quickly learning not to rush out & buy anything Gen1 from Apple untill I do my homework & read the reviews! The remote & universal dock are cool accessories, especially if hooked up to a home stereo.
I wonder will their new iPod Updater include and update for my 4G Ipod (32 DAYS OLD)so that it 2 can play vids, if not i guess its time to lose my Ipod and ask for a new1 from mommy...
But wait ...................
But the screen is so tiny, maybe i'll just wait and get that new battery with a 4gig hd, thats coming out for my psp, after all psp screen very quality than a tiny Ipod screen, or maybe a can beg and get both hummmmm....

Blah, blah, blah. Hardware with no content.
If you don't get it, Apple is incrementally upgrading hardware for its own business sake. In terms of vision, Apple, and Apple alone, is creating the new marketplaces and modes of distribution (profitably).
Apple is about verticle end-to-end solution. Not just throwing all of the latest hardware capabilities into something. The market and content isn't there yet, so Apple doesn't have to be there yet. Instead they move the hardware and market forward a little bit but at the same time.
You can't take that away from them.
Well, Steve Jobs did say this was the year of QVGA.
I guess the success, which Apple got with audio I-pod would be hard to replicate with the video i-pod.
There are quite a few constraint attached with I-pod video 1. The size of the screen - you cant enjoy a video beyond a certain point on a 2.5' screen 2. the transfer of the video on the i-pod should be less cumbersome and the user should have more options to enjoy the video seamlessly (transfer from source to i-pod , without bothering too much about the format issues , more options to choose from ) 3. There isnt much choice of content at the moment and most of the content is available the way Apple wants to deliver.
Also I can just switch on my i-pod and listen to music and continue doing whatever I am doing, but with video, you need to take out time to view the video, your attention is required. I can listen to audio while jogging, driving , walking , cooking or whatever you name it :) .....and if I need to watch it ( which requires my attention , why wont I use a better device - TV , LCD screens or whichever provides a much more enhanced experience. Well until and unless, I am desperate to catch up with some show (right not much options are available) or I really want to watch a video on the move, I dont think people would really get great benefit out of it. To a certain extent, one can view pictures on it, but again, you cant enjoy it fully on that tiny screen . And for watching pictures the previous i-pod are available to choose from. But yes one thing is for sure, the best thing is, the size of the i-pod video is reduced considerably from the previous versions of 20gb and 60 GB options.

Apple.com has discounts for education. Teachers and students can pick them up at $40 off normal price. I am a teacher an may pick one up through there, and it comes with free laser ingraving.
Only problem is getting robbed on the D.C. metro for it. You are supposed to switch out headphones so people don't know you have an ipod, but with this you will have it out of your pocket in your lap for all to see. Thats not good!
YAY 30GB 0.44" thin video iPod!
2 hour batter life.
ooh.. never mind.
Now that Apple made the first step, I hope Yahoo will create something like Unlimited, for Tv Shows.
Total Subscription for 5$ :D

There has been some implication that this ipod doesn't support your own video. This doesn't seem to be the case, the apple.com site clearly refers to uploading your own video content onto the ipod. Also for mac users, quicktime pro has also been updated allowing users to convert any video into ipod compatible resolution. This will make it really easy to get whatever video we want on the new ipod!
iPod Video should looks like this if it going to be considered a serious player. Who cares how many movies it will store if you have to watch them on a cell phone sized screen. Geesh.
http://www.churchoflivingfaith.com/images/iPodVideo2.jpg
it's an AUDIO PLAYER with VIDEO CAPABILITIES, not a video player.
once ITMS has a larger video market, and they offer higher resolution videos, THEN the apple VIDEO PLAYER will be released. i don't get why everybody's getting so fussy about this. they made the ipod thinner, the screen bigger, and battery life better. There's really nothing to complain about there.
I ordered a black unit, 30GB with AppleCare.
My gripes even before I get it:
1. There is NO POWER ADAPTER included with the unit, you MUST recharge via USB - that sucks ass, im gonna totally order another ipod charger via AppleCare for my existing ipod.
2. Pre-existing accessories such as the iTrip will no longer work with the unit.
I don't think some people here are able to understand that this is a music player that also plays video. It was not meant to be primarily a video player. For those of you who mentioned the Palm TX being released today - have you been living in a cave for 2 years? PDA capable of video playback with 3.5-3.7" screens have been with us for more than 2 years. Big deal.
If you want to primarily watch videos then by all means get a PSP or PDA or some Creative brick, but if you need your music collection on the go and maybe once in a while catch a music video or a comedy show that you missed then you know what you can get for the price and size of a small music player.
#65 Hey teacher please tell your students how to spell ENGRAVING correctly. With horrible spelling and grammar on the internet I've often wondered if it is the failure of teachers to teach or students to learn. I guess I don't need to wonder so much anymore.
Although there are some serious shortcomings in the specs, I really doubt the average consumer will care. They are going at the same market who buys iMacs and iBooks that don't really know what RAM does, let alone what a codec is. The real advantage here is the remote control dock, and the ability to store video and play it back on a TV, not the iPod screen.
Also, 4:3 aspect ratio 2.5" LCD's have become so commonplace on other devices, like digital cameras, that they may actually be the cheapest thing Apple could get from suppliers - I wouldn't be surprised if the screen actually costs Apple less than the nano screen. Going with a widescreen - something like the fake pics that were circulating - would probably have driven the final retail price too high.
#57, there are 2-3 year old iMacs out there that support Firewire but only USB 1.1. To simply omit Firewire is a huge problem, IMHO. Case in point, they lost *my* purchase today...
Well, Steve Jobs did say this was the year of QVGA
---
They just announced a new iPod that plays H.264 and costs the same..and you're bitching..
How negative can you get..
hate to break it to you guys, but this is not a video ipod, nor does steve jobs want it or markets it to be. it is simply a fantastic music player that "can do video" or so he says. he says it is not a vpod or anything like that. it is just an ipod, and its primary use is for music, and in that area it is the best.
the ipod looks like a piece of crap and it seems pretty crappy and i wont waste my money on it. its another good try by apple but yet such a failure apple sucks like poopy they are a crap company dell dj all the way!!!!
itunes video store - 2,000 videos in one day
ipod UMDs - 30 in 6 months
that's pwnage
Poster #76 had to go to bed after overdosing on Flintsone Vitamins. Yes, he was kidding about the Dell DJ... and he apologies for such harsh language (poopy?).
Yeesh.
This is a good device by Apple, and I mean both the hardware as well as the iTunes support to go with it. This is an easy portable video solution in terms of transferring video to the device easily and legally, and having good content (more TV shows, then movies, will come in the future). The only problem is that the video is only 320x240, which is too low quality for TV output. A future version supporting 640x480 or 800x600 (imagine the lcd on that!!) would be beautiful. Then you run into bandwidth issues.
I don't have an iPod yet, but I may spring for this one...or I'll wait for the 640x480 version in a year.
***Sent from my HTC Universal
No dont be racist i like the poopy and dell is better then apple i love poopy and so should you commenter number 78 and yes i did over dose on vitamins call me at 6107166121
For those of you using a Powerbook with USB 1.1 and a PCMCIA slot, you can get one of these which will give you USB 2.0 and the ability to use the new 5G iPod.

LOL,
IPOD has 75% plus of the market share (in digital music players) and the non apple fanboys are still running around calling it a fad....If it were a fad, it would have died by now but it only seems to be gaining momentum. Wake up and smell the coffee! Looks like ignorance and denial of facts/hard eveidence is a requirement for non apple fanboys...
Oh, and by the way, just because you don't like apple, it does not make you a non apple fanboy. People are free to do what they want and I respect that. I just hate it (and just laugh now) when someone comes into a discussion like this and says things like "do some research" or "the ipod is overated". Last I looked, it plays music just fine. Consider the video a bounus. I am sure creative and iriver make good players. plenty of people buy them. I just don't see this overwhelming superiority and value that many of the non apple fanboys claim that those products have. And market share figures don't lie
77) 2000 music videos, not 2000 movies. nice try.
i do agree that UMD seems pretty worthless.(to me at least)
coughcoughfanboycoughcough
But then again i'm calling the kettle black...
The video feature in the iPod was just to please all the consumers who want the feature for little things, like watching a quick TV show, not movie junkies or road warriors expecting a widescreened, super huge pmp. This is basically a semi-useful novelty.
(R.I.P eMac)
Just to clarify....#80 is the dellfanboy which needs some radium or something.
Now, what I have been waiting for in an a video ipod is, will it actually display artist, album, song, artwork on your TV?
Also, why is it that iTunes 6 will not let you import videos from DVDs? Bummer!
2 - 3 hours battery life for video? ew. That means it will probably die after 1 hour
...
The haters just don't get it.
It's a music iPod.
That plays video.
NO WHERE in the marketing copy is the new device called,"iPod Video" "Video iPod", or the like.
...
mmkay?
So just hold on to your great Microsoft stock, while my Apple stock keeps growing.
...
...
Better yet, just go away. Go buy your Zen whatever; you really don't care about Apple nor its products, because you wouldn't post here if you did care, would you?
...
frickin' sigh.
...
No keynote video avilable???
Despite having just bought a new iPod nano, I really want this. (It'd look nice, docked next to my new iMac, wouldn't it?) I'll love the massive storage space (after all, it is primarily a music player), but I fear that the video playing capabilities will really only whet my appetite for the "real" iPod video and iTunes Movie Store. I'd trade my nano in for one now...and then trade the 5G iPod in for the iPod video (and another nano, because the iPod video would hopefully be bigger) in January or whatever. I wish I didn't have to fall in love with every Apple product (I'll miss you, eMac!) but I can't help myself.
Call me an Apple fanboy (which would be funny, because the only Apple product I own is an iPod nano), I don't care. All the people who are complaining about the 5G iPod don't get what it is. It's not the "iPod video." It's a nice, new, smaller iPod that holds more and also had the new feature of playing video content in addition to audio. They made the screen as big as they could, but they didn't make the unit any bigger, because it's still primarily an audio player.
The res limitation of the videos is so weak! Why not have a desktop worthy option? It tells you that this is really only about the iPod and not larger media dream (which is so strange given the intro of front row). I know it has been good to them but is selling iPods the only model Apple has?
It will probably continue to work - after all, the mainstream user barely knows that you can get something other than an iPod to play mp3s. They will never know that you can get other, far more capable devices for vid playback. (Wow the 2 hour vid playback is hard cheese.)
crap. lo-res, 4:3, small screen. only dumb apple-lovers will like this.
i was so hyped when i got video on my phone (SPV).. watched two simpsons epis and got bored .. the tiny screen just dont work belive me! ..
so i think its just a waste .. but hey now you are getting a thinner ipod for the same price as a white ipod .. and well .. to some extent .. only better..
but still .. for me nano is a winner .. i am goin out today to get one .. wish me luck
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE EMINEM AD,
I saw it as a link before i left for school, when i got to school, fired up my laptop, it was gone!
:'(
i watched it from the streaming feed, and it looks awesome, love the splashes and the way the characters intereact with the environment.
