The iPod (with video)
Here it is, official pics and specs of the new video-enabled iPod: it's the same width and height as the current mode, but thinner. It has a 320 x 240 pixel, 2.5-inch, 260,000 color display, 20 hours of battery life, and supports playback of H.264 and MPEG4 at 30 fps. Has TV out and will come in both 30GB and 60GB versions, with the 30GB version being 31% thinner than the current 20GB iPod and the 60GB version being 12% thinner than the current 20GB iPod. The 30GB will hold up to 75 hours of video and retail for $299. The 60GB version will hold 150 hours of video and sell for $399. Both will ship in one week.

I tried converting video last night with quicktime pro and when I try to play the video in itunes, there is no sound. Anyone else having this problem? My black 60 gigger is on the way!
i just got my 30gb ipod with the video and it is great. my only complaint would be that the battery life doesn't seem to be the 14 hours as advertised because the battery is already half done when i've only listened to it for like 2 or 3 hours so maybe it's because i keep the backlight on but it's only on for 2 seconds !
Hi, is there a way to tranform .rmvb files in to ipod format files. if so, is there a free download albe converter that can do this?
is there a way to transform .rmvb to ipod files. where can i download such a converter?
I got my 60GB black ipod and I have to say that I am very impressed. I've owned an ipod from every generation so far (except photo) and this one is by far the best. The video is amazing, it just took a little work on my end figuring out the best way to format the video and all. And Channel Frederator... leaves me speechless!! Only problem I have encountered is I can't seem to get the ipod to mount over USB 1.1. Before you ask why I would want to do this, I am using USB 2.0 to sync on my dual 1.8 G5, but this computer is only at work, which is fine. I'm here most of the day anyway so I'll do most of my syncing here, but when I go home all I have is a little 1ghz eMac with lowly USB 1.1, no 2.0. Anyway, when I plug it in to the 1.1 connection, it shows the "Do Not Disconnect" screen and it charges, but it will not mount. Not to my desktop and not in iTunes. Any ideas?
Thanks!
I figured it out! I had to move it to a different port. Apparently, even though this eMac has three USB ports, two of them are on the same circuit so if there is something plugged in both of them, they are competing for power. I plugged it into the one that is by itself and everything jives. I'm going to copy some files to my pod now, maybe I'll be finished by morning...ugh
Just purchased a 60gb iPod video, trying to convert avi files to iPod via quicktime pro ver 7, its running extremely slow, how long should it take to convert a 300 mg file on a high end pc 3.2 mhz with 2gig of memory?
will there be another generation of iPods coming out some time in the near future? i've never had one and now with the color display and video capabilites it's really tempting me. i know i eventually will cave in and buy one, but i'm glad i didn't one earlier. like a first or second, and i was really tempted to get a mini. now i'm glad i didn't because the 5th gens are a lot nicer. i'm just wondering if they come out with 6th gens with better capabilities and more functions. cause once i get one i won't upgrade, but i don't wanna get a 5th gen and see a 6th gen and wish i had one of those instead of a 5th.
soo does anyone know if there will be a 6th gen anytime soon? like a new one for xmas or something?
I had the same problem trying to convert to ipod video. The image was fine but not sound. I was using quicktime 7 pro. I fixed using iSquint.
Hey Everyone..i jus got the new one with video but i have no idea how to but videos or music so can someone help me..email me at ricanshortiiox@yahoo.com or IM me on Aim(PrzFinezt)or yahoo Ricanshortiiox
The video ipod rocks. TV out works great. Don't listen to all the people who whine about the screen size and don't actually own the device.
To convert any video for ipod, you can use Videora Ipod Converter (if you already have the movie on your HD)or FairUse (to rip directly from DVD to h.264). Both are very easy and free (the paid version of FairUse does add multicore support, though)
I have transferred about 100 video clips to my Ipod. Itunes adds the default video type "film" to the video clips. Also, Itunes only allows changing this property to "video music" for one file at the time. Very tedious to change 100 video clips or more in this way. Am I overlooking something? Is there another utility?
quote: the only way the market could compete with this marvelous product is maybe by having a similar product that has a bigger screen, supports more video formats and can also, like the ipod, play MP3's
alas, no such products exist.
ever heard of a psp? psp with atrac owns ipod + videos +bigger screen +wireless internet + games + instant messenger = ownage and it cost less
I've seen enough.... Hey 163 aka Nathan, while the PSP is nice, how many movies do you have in your pocket? That big things better suited for a book bag or back pack don't ya think??
And if you do carry it in your pocket, how many movies fit on each 75 dollar, 1 gig smart disk?...... about 2, 2hr movies.
Do the math.... subtract 3 carry 1.... got it.. It would take 25, 75 dollar smart disks, for you to carry the 50, 2hr movies, 1 video ipod can hold...
Will THEY fit in your pocket??? Perhaps, cause there's no money left.
117.... while you sound knowledgeable I'm afraid you're just wrong on so many levels.
I'll address a few:
Fact, I'm charging my video iPod on my old 3g firewire charger right now... You can not transfer files using firewire but you can charge.
Fact, there's no USB 2.0 conspiracy... The biggest selling iPods of all time are the Mini... Each Mini shipped with USB 2.0 with no charger, and few complaints... 1 YEAR AGO !!!
Your notion that Apple wants a large part of the lucrative accessory market is simply misguided... Variety itself drives iPod sales... cases by Coach, Kate Spade, Macho brands like Monster, lure their base toward the iPod.... Heck, there's an iPod accessory section at Target !!!
Your idea that the 4g is somehow superior to the 5 is silly... Besides screen size, battery life, width and speed, the only other difference is video...
You can't think a video playing 4g is more disireable than a 5.... Can you???
No, I suspect the 4 was your first... The 3g was my third...
Your mistake was purchasing the iPod Photo. I sat on the 3g knowing the 4 was just a better mouse trap... AND I'M A PHOTOGRAHER...
By the way, you don't think photos are more impressive on the 4g... do you???
I do agree on one point... Apple has strong armed their 3rd party partners... But you make them sound as unethical as Microsoft...
The difference, there are many mp3 options, still Apple builds the worlds most popular player with over (30 million shipped).
When it's that good you're expected to ask for more... Like Ray Charles, demanding 75 cents on the dollar and the right to own his masters... OUTRAGEOUS, BUT HE GOT IT, he was that good.
I think you're angry with comments like Apple is out to screw it's base...
They make insanely great products. I'm on my 8th Mac and 4th iPod...
Got Lube :-}
I haven't had time to read all the comments posted but, having read some of the more negative ones, I would like to say that while most of the comments are true there is really little wrong with the new video ipod. It does it's job very well.
Video: good output to TV (though you'll spend some time trying to configure the best settings for your converter)
Music: same as it always was.
Data storage: perfect.
One thing I would add is that I'm pissed off that a recharger doesn't come with it. A bit like when I bought a playstation and it didn't come with a memory card even though every game needs one.
While there are marginally better products at varying prices out there, if it's an iPod you want there's nonthing else for it ;0)
Eh, evrbody u noe like marco, my sis bought a iPod video (black) and it was SWEET, well for her lah, im just here to say for her "I have a video ipod but I still can't upload video. In "ipod options" in iTunes the video tab is not modifiable and the flag is on "don't update video".
Can anybody help me?" Well dats all, REALLYPLZZZ HELP!!
thxx if u do
Max(a million)
Since so many people here are not satisfied with their New iPod....ill freakin buy it from you gosh....email me and let me kno whats up...at Thechosenslayer8@aol.com....thanx!!
Hey #158 there will be a 6th generation iPod, no doubt. There will also be a 7th gen, 8th gen, and so on until people stop buying them. And every time it's going to get better and better. If you keep waiting on the next best thing, you will never get what you want. My advice; buy the newest thing right when it comes out, that way when the next best thing is released, you won't feel so left out. There is also a HUGE aftermarket for these things. You can always sell your old one and use th money toward the newest generation. Example: I had a 4th gen with the monochrome screen (not the photo) and right when the 5g was released I sold it for $200. All I had to do was put another $185 with it to get the 60GB 5G (shipping and all, I love ebay!). I could have been a little more conservative and went with the 30GB and only needed $100 more, but I needed the extra storage. I ended up buying a 30GB also, for my wife ;) Just don't wait, if you want it, get it.
I am not at all impressed that you have to upgrade the software at an extra cost just to put your own video files on the ipod video.
The unit should come complete ready to use.
I've found it very frustrating and I'm ready to return it.

Now I was just wondering. For the new Ipod Video could you just download songs/videos off limewire and put them on your ipod or no?
Yes. Pull from Lime wire then add to iTunes. Works wonderfully.
Hey #170, there is PLENTY of FREE video converters for the Ipod 5g that there is really nothing to complain about on that end. With a little research, they are VERY easy to find. The best I've found is iSquint. IT handles almost anything I throw at it and it's FREE FREE FREE! Plus the developer has a great sense of humor. Download it here... http://homepage.mac.com/tylerl82/
Like Marco and Max I too have a video Ipod with the same problem :
In "ipod options" in iTunes the video tab is not modifiable and the flag is on "don't update video".
Can anyone help ?
Is it possible to put DVD's on the new 5G iPod? I have decrypted some of my DVD's (from my personal collection) using DVD Decrypter and shrunk them down (so they fit on a normal single-layer DVD) using DVD Shrink.
My question is this: Can I put these DVD's (the shrunken file is an .ifo extension) onto the 5G iPod? Will quality be sacrificed?
i have a video ipod. i love it to peices, but not because of the video capabiity. i think ive watched something on it about 3 times since i got it a month and a half ago. the reason i got it is because its thinner, looks better and has a bigger screen than other ipods. if i really want to watch a video i'll go down to the video store, rent one, and watch it on my 76 cm plasma screen tv. if i want to listen to music wherever i go, ill use my ipod. yes the video ipod has tv out thingy, but i guarantee you anyone who buys a video ipod will get over the video capability prety quickly. who needs videos anyway, take in your surroundings when your out and about. live life, dont stare at a little screen. the only good thing about having video capability is so i can show off to everyone who doesnt have one.
Hey number 168 and 176, if you already have the answer to your question, great, but if u dont, listen up: Make sure all ur songs are saved on ur comp in a secure folder, uninstal itunes and reinstall it. put ur songs back and it should have default settings. if not, email apple and they should tell you what to do.

For everyone who wants to put their own videos onto their ipod video, wheither it be a home movie or something u got off limewire, (dont tell apple about this) but get azureus(search off of google for it) and then go to Piratebay.org search quicktime pro+keygen, download the torrent. Azureus will start automatically. when its done, just use follow the steps.

i dont even have an ipod video,i just broke my ipod mini today trying to change the battery,i dont even think it can be fixed.but anyway the ipod video sounds pretty sweet and i was wondering if you could put other tv shows besides disney channel or abc and stuff, like sienfeld or family guy.cuz that would be awesome, and i was gunna wait a while before i buy one because theres always little things they improve on it after they first come out.like when i got my 4gb ipod mini like two months later they came out with the 6gb ipod mini which i wanted really bad because it had more space and longer battery life.so im gunna wait till they update the little things liek longer battery life for during video play,or if they decide to make it to used with firewire, ill just wait and see if they make it better.i was still wondering if there is other tv shows you can buy other than abc and disney like i said before
great gadget -- but only for that super scratchible screen! Did apple not think of this after they sold the Nano?

If you're trying to add videos to your ipod, what format do they have to be in for them to be 'able to be imported the your ipod'? I've tried a few files without a coverter that ar .avi .mpg and .wmv and they are not importing. What should I do for this problem?
