On a more relevant note...Apple does not bring anything to the table in terms of features....but what it excels at is distribution.
Being a big company they have the abaility to make deals with big corporations. This may mean that more and more TV shows, music videos etc will become available via other mediums such as Amazon etc.
Once the entertainment industry is confident of the DRM/other protection they will make a lot more money selling TV shows at 2 dollars than forcing people to wait for months for a DVD.
for the longest time, probably since the second generation, i've wanted an ipod and not until today have i made the plunge to buy one. for a little while i was waiting for a superior player, but now i really believe all the other dap's have nothing versus this video ipod (at least for the time being). i think it will take at least 2 years before anything can really compete. great job apple.
Yeah, I'll probably buy this. I bought an engraved iPod Nano just a few weeks ago, and had it engraved with the last two letters of my name [Za]. The last two letters of my sister's name also end in Za, so I'll prolly polish the thing using plastic polish and gift it to her, while getting a 60GB for myself.
This is a joke. People you are getting all worked up over something that is pretty, not usefull.
What you are getting for $300-$400 dollars is an iPod Color with a slightly thinner body, a slightly larger screen, and a firmware upgrade. Oh, and the choice of black, with a black wheel, instead of the red wheel on the U2 version.
What you are NOT now getting is a dock AND for the love of god they aren't even including a USB Power Plug. You now are forced to charge the unit off your computer. To have these I am now forced to buy $70 in accessories for a dock and power plug, bringing the 30gig to a price of $370. A year ago I bought a 40gig 4th gen the day of release for only $400. I got 10 more gigs and all accessories included for only $30 more.
As much money as Apple is making off of iTunes, they should either be able to sell these things much cheaper, or stop being cheap themselves and at least include the very basic of accessories. No power plug??? I mean seriously, no power plug???
I agree with #6. This Video capable ipod is nothing significant. The screen is so much smaller compared to other PMP and it doesn't support DivX or XviD.
>>As much money as Apple is making off of iTunes, they should either be able to sell these things much cheaper, or stop being cheap themselves and at least include the very basic of accessories. No power plug??? I mean seriously, no power plug???
Here's where you've biff'd it. Apple makes almost NOTHING from iTunes. The profit is from the iPods. Almost the opposite situation of the major consoles (make money off games, lose on hardware).
Yes, but "competes" on what level? Archos and Creative has video players, but neither sell very many of them. Competes on features sure, but marketing and sales...nothing currently touches the iPod.

so what happened to the remote connector? sure, you've got the whole wireless remote now, but i don't think a lot of people are going to carry around their ipod with the dock on it. they should've put the receiver in the ipod, but whatever.
CB, ok you got me there. But seriously, has it sunk in to the fan boys yet that they are paying $300 for a product that doesn't even have a power plug?
You are now not buying the 5th gen because it's better, has more features and has better accessories. You are buying it because it is an Apple. Sounds like Microsoft products to me...
I think this is just what I need. I go on many basketball trips and sometimes the drives can be rather boring, even with music. Having photos on the iPod wasn't very attractive to me, as why when would I really look at a bunch of photos? But with videos, that is different, on the drive, another and I could just watch a movie the whole drive. The 'small screen' doesn't really bother me, as we used to play 4 player Halo 2 on a 5" screen last year on the trips, so picture 5" divided in 4 separate parts... and we still have fun and could play fine. So I'm sure 2.5" screen with a movie won't be a problem.
Now the only problem I can think of is the battery. So it lasts for 14 hours with music, but how long for a movie? I heard 2 hours... that isn't very much. Is that just speculation or is that fact? Help please.
Also, what's all this about extra accessories? I thought you could just use a USB 2.0 cord to hook the iPod up. You need a dock now? Huh? Power plug? I'm kind of clueless...
I think this was a dumb way of doing the new video ipod. If the new ipod had a portable DVD player form function- it could even be as small as 5", I think it'd work far better than this does. If it can interface with those in car DVD players/consoles that's a huge plus for it. I'd need to see one of these before I considered buying one. My 40 gig ipod photo is still sufficient for my needs.
"Only 60GB on the high end? For a VIDEO player?! My CD collection won't even fit in that, much less my total MP3 collection, or music videos, or pr0n.
Ah well, guess I have to buy Archos after all. Wonder if they'll put out a 120GB model before Xmas."
Um... wtf? 60 gigs ISN'T ENOUGH? There arn't any micro drives that small over 80 gigs, and the 80 gigger just got released. A DVD movie at full resolution is generally between 4 and 6 gigs... compressed to 320x240 you're probably looking at around 300-500KB a movie for high quality. And unless you are compressing at some ridiculously high rate (for mp3), then 60 gigs (probably around a thousand hours or 40 days) of music should be fine. Unless you're using AIFF or WAV or something... which is ridiculous for portable use. This is a portable player, not a media center.
#26 5" is small? For a dong maybe, but not for a portable music player that plays video also. Yeah you can go ahead and put it in your pocket so it can make up for your small dong.

Eventually someone will hack it to play DivX etc. formats. You wouldn't expect Apple to support these formats anyways.
A good thing is that a lot of videos on the web will probably now shift towards the format supported by the video iPod, whereas before every different website would use its own format.
I think its time device manufacturers got through their head that design is everything. Notice for every other DAP or DVP, the seller lists technical specifications, but not for the video iPod. I think they could afford to stick an AC adapter in the box.
I could really care less if the new ipod can play video, all I care about is being able to see all the stuff I would on the scree (artist, album, song, album cover, whatever), on the TV screen using the video out... which should of been the case of the ipod photo, anyone know if this will be the case with the ipod video?
Two minutes of rational thought. That's all it really takes.
Apple's headed toward a media player monospony, not a monopoly. The fundamental difference? *Lots of competing products in the marketplace*. If the iPod isn't your cup-o-swill, buy one of the competing products. Pissing and moaning about how unbelievably awful the iPod is because it won't play your pirated, bittorrented crap (except, inconveniently for you, much of it will be able to be converted in QuickTime Player just fine) is pointless.
I like it, I'm a girl and I don't just like it because it's sexy. I have to commute to college and I don't mind converting an episode of Futurama to watch on my way.. I'm definately gonna get one when they get released in the UK (next week).
I'll buy it. I was planning on buying the 60 gig anyway. Now it comes with video, free of charge(i dont mind leaving it connected to my computer.)
H.264 means video at very small file sizes and at very high quality. If we can save movies at full resolution (and i think we will be able to) and connect it to our T.V.'s(which it should), then this ipod will be revolutionary.no one will ever have to carry a dvd again. Imagine your entire music and movie libraries in your pocket(when the hardrive gets big enough, ofcourse).
Um.. listen, SOME people collect alot of music. That's just it. BIG DEAL, eh? My father has over 100 gigs of music because.. well he's bought alot of CDs and listened to alot of artists over the years.
Even a 60 gig iPod couldn't be able to conveniently hold his entire music collection, but at the time only a 40 gig was available. And he uses it just fine.
Why is it so ridiculous? To me, these players need to aim at the file hoarders too. Over the next 10 years, your miniscule collection (what is it, like minimalistic 5 gigs? haha) will grow over 40-50 more gigs, who knows. In my opinion, it's great to have the extra space as I download lots of music. And it's important to think of the future.

stop referring to it as a "Video iPod". This is not a portable video device. This is a audio player with a "bonus" of the capability of playing videos... So there is no reason to complain about Apple's lack of video features since this is not the primary use. Apples target was not portable video but a new generation of iPod with smaller HDD's (physical size)and some extras. When they do produce a "Video iPod" i'm sure we'll see something fantastic.
