How-To: Convert a DVD for your iPod (with video) in Windows
Today's how-to will
take you through the steps of getting from DVD to the new iPod
(with video) on the Windows platform. Happy portable watching!
What you will need:
- a dvd to avi ripper program (we used the free DVDx 2.3 off of sourceforge)
- an avi to mov (quicktime) program (we used the trial version of Xilisoft Video Converter)
- the new itunes 6.0 (free download from apple)
Procedure
Load your DVD in DVDx 2.3 by choosing “OpenDVD Root” from the drop down menu and navigating to and selecting the VIDEO_TS file of your DVD.
Prepare your
input settings for the dvd in DVDx 2.3. In
DVDx 2.3 you should choose the correct video track,
language
of audio, output frame rate, and subtitles in the
“Input Settings” menu.
Next, choose the correct parameters in the “Output Settings” menu. Choose AVI, Export Settings resolution of 320x240, choose a video codec (we used Cinepak), etc. and click “Apply”.
Now rip the dvd by clicking on the red encode button on the bottom right.
This process may take quite a bit of time and disk space depending on the quality and length of the video. Next launch Xilisoft Video Converter and choose “File > Add”. Navigate to the .avi file you just created with DVDx 2.3. Now on the bottom left of the window choose “QuickTime Format (*.mov)”. Choose a destination for the file you will create. Lastly, change the video size in the right hand column to 320x240 and click the “Encode” button.
Launch iTunes
6 and choose “File > Add File to Library”.
Choose the .mov file you created in the last step.
Click on “Videos” in the left column and double click on your file to make sure the video works. Load it on
your shiny new iPod and voila!
Thanks to HackADay reader Fred Bonatto for the tips.

I have a question. I did exactly what this web site told me to do and everytime a insert a file into iTunes, it works great but then when I play the film, it always splits the picture in half, well it's like 3/4 of the screen has the frame in it and the othe 1/4 has the other and there is a vertical line. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with each different DVD's that I had were widescreen. Has anyone else had this problem?
Look everyone, i have had the same problem and i hav tried all, videora psp and ipod versions, cucusoft and some others and i cant get the audio 2 sync. doesnt matter at what framerate i use or wat kind of file i use, all i can figure out is that some files work and some dont sync correctly, the easiest way to stop this from happening is download pq dvd ipod. ive been using this for weeks now and i every file syncs perfectly. its amazingly quick to transfer files into mp4 and it has decent enough editing choices aswell. def worth the 30 dollers asking price. or for the more savy users dere are serials out there for it. but by far this trounces over all other convertors
Can anyone send me the serial number for PQ DVD?
blink182 rocks.........................................................and good charlottee also rocks........................but hiphop suckxxxxxxxx.
I was just wondering when you get the registration code for quicktime pro, where do you type it in.
Also, has any bought a case for the 20GB ipod yet?
Umm, I quickly browsed through the comments here and quite a few people asked if video files that play on psp would play on the ipod video. And that answer is, they do. I have some mp4s formatted for psp that played just fine when i added it to my ipod video.
I justs bought the pqdvd software due to all the good reviews, but when I try to use it, it won't work. Everytime I start to record it an error report pops up.
Has anyone else had this problem?
I cant find a keygen for PQ to ipod, i have been looking everywhere. If anyone has one let me know. Also it sounds like no programs currently are out that have very good quality on the tv. What is the bes program/settings to display your ipod on the TV. I am a noob to the dvd ripping world. Is there a program that i can rip my dvd and it ends up with only one files? I have searched alot and havent found an answere. thanks
hey. I was wondering if any one can send me the serial number for PQ DVD. thanks so much
please send it to mkelly2115@comcast.net
Yea I was looking for a software that converted dvd to ipod format. I happened to find a program called Videora iPod converter. It works ok except for the fact the you have to copy the files of the actual dvd seperately. After that I create a playlist for the movie and it works okay for the most part. There is a pause when it switches files.
What's up with you lamers asking for registration codes? GO BUY THE THING!!! They even let you test it for free, not everyone does that. Step up, be a man, spend the $30. If you can't afford that, get the hell off my Internet.
Did try Nero Recode2. Much simpler. Converted 2 mpeg to Mp4 via Recode.Plays great, video and sound. Though I just drag/drop to Itunes while Ipod connected into Video folder. Seemed much faster.
Converted 'Madagascar" and couple music videos.
Quality good.Much simpler.

I have an AV cable I connnect my Ipod Video to my TV, but the resolution is horrible for the TV (320byxxx). Which software (in WinXP) can I use to convert avi to mp4 or mov that will do it in high resolution to work with my TV? I have tried so many but they do not do it correctly, or am I not doing it right?
Ive had no success either with PQ DVD software. Results vary for different DVDs. Either:
1. Loading DVD...for hours(overnight) with no outcome; or
2. Finds DVD, but then Entering DVD Menu....for hours with no outcome; or
3. Records a 1KB file from a 0:00:00 0:00:01 available DVD which is unplayable.
Never seen a preview play...the most I've got is intro music playing repetitively.
Have tried all downloads & upgrades as directed in software's 'troubleshooter' but absolutely no luck.
PQ DVD - fyi now working using AnyDVD instead of DVD43.
Could someone please email me the PQ DVD to iPod video converter serial to cricketer124@hotmail.com? Thanks.

When torments come. How sweet it is when it comes with no em. Okay so its my ridiculous attempt at a riddle but you figure it out it isn't hard. and i recommend nero 7 ultra edition and follow this guy, he knows what he's talking about. And if your smart you'll be just one day of patience away from all the dvd to ipod movies you can handle.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/266581
it still only gives you 5 minutes of the movie, unless im mistaken. Even if you are registered it only gives you 6 minutes and forty seconds.
I bought the new iPod 60G. and I copied a Music Video straight from the New Korn CD, it is .mov and i imported to itunes, it plays in itunes, but when i update my ipod, I get an error msg that reads The music video file is not updated, because this file cant be played on your iPod???? what is wrong?
Please help.
"Isn't the file size limited to 2.5MB for a video for the new iPod? (http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html)"
No, the file size is *not* limited to 2.5mb for video. Re-read the spec.
Richard, That's 2.5MBS, not 2.5MB.
Dude, those 2.5 Mb are the maximum data rate... 2.5 mb of video would be lousy! There is no limit except the iPod storage to the size of the videos... its only the amount of data the ipod can process.
#19, are you stupid? It's the quality; 2.5 mpbs, not 2.5 Megabyte maximum for the iPod. Jesus I hate stupid people.
when i rip the dvd, it only does the first 5 minutes? Can anyone help?
I did this, and I still couldn't get it to work. I'm now thinking about getting rid of my Ipod, any other suggestions?
The free version of Xilisoft video converter that I downloaded does not allow you to change any of the output settings, so you cannot convert to .MOV format, and only allows you to convert 5 minutes of video at a time. Is there another free AVI to MOV encoder out there, or another download of this that allows more options?
OK, well, I tried using FairUse Wizard 2, the free trial of course ;)...it gets the chains or whatever, lets me choose my aspect ratio, tc. Then, I have to choose between a few codecs, xvid, divx, and I think 2 more...first question is which should I choose...then, when I go to encode, it tells me that it cannot proceed because it is unable to create a temp file. Anyone know how to fix this?
Alright, here is my question..I used Xilisoft Video Converter Trial (like your list said you did) to convert my video. It says that it only allows 5 minutes to be encoded in the trial version...So I gotta buy the program to acually get my whole movie? Do you just have a small clip of your movie on yours?
Anyone have any advice on another program that a person that has VERY little knowledge on this sort of stuff can use and figure out to convert my files?
ero Recode files should work on the iPod (Nero Recode uses MPEG-4 H.264). Nero Recode is very simple to use. You basically select the folder with your ripped DVD, select the encoding profile, and wait for it to create your movie. I guess its to be seen if the iPod can read these movies.
I just couldn't figure out how to select codec as I can't see any button to configure output codec!! :(
this sucks. I would use frigging hand brake. Ya, if I had a mac.
i just put the first 5 minutes of empire strikes back on my iPod. a few problems; 1) it says i needed to download an aspi driver to get the whole film on there, not just the first 5 minutes. the problem with this is that i downloaded the drivers...now what? (i am a n00b, i am surprised i got empire on my ipod. although it did take me a good 3 or 4 hours. 2) secondly, the audio is a bit off. i'm sure most of you are familiar with empire, and in the beginning when luke is on the tauntaun, you can really tell that the audio isn't synched properly...it starts about a second or 2 before luke's lips start to move. this may seem trite, but it's actually quite noticeable and quite annoying. is there any way to fix this?! any help is greatly appreciated.
Hey, Anyone who whats a PQ DVD to iPod Video Serial email cricketer124@hotmail.com.
PQ DVD to iPod Video Converter is the easiest way to convert dvds or files, just click open then select the file or dvd then it loads then you just click convert and the file converts into an iPod Video folder on your desktop.
Thanks Barb for the guide. xilisoft dvd to ipod converter is a one-step program. it is also user-friendly. here is its download address
http://www.xilisoft.com/dvd-to-ipod-converter.html
anyone else notice it won't rip more than like 7 min. of video unless you install that ASPI thing. (which i did but it won't "authenticate" my drive)
Just look at the pictures in this guide.... you can see in almost all of the, including the last one, that their movie came out to be only 5 min.!!! Obviously Engadget didn't actually test this method themselves because it sucks! can someone else tell me what to do?
I bought an ipod for the wife this xmas - her first
question - can I watch films on it?
Took me 2 hours to sort it - don't use the guide on here - it doesn't work.
Just use PQ DVD, it works, either buy it or search for a serial (took me 30 secs to find a working one).
For encoded dvds either use anydvd or dvd43 and forget ripping the dvd to hd before conversion. I'm using dvd43 and its handling every dvd so far.
Changing the fps is an option in the output menu of PQ DVD. I'm using winXP with a 30g ipod. No voice synch issues or any probs at all.
Also, limewire already has tons of films ready to play on your ipod - encode your own for better quality.
richard that says 2.5 mbps as in 2.5 megabytes per second not total
