The Nokia E61 vs. the Treo 650
Yup, it's the pic we've all been waiting for (or at least it's the pic we geeks here at Engadget have been waiting for): the new Nokia E61 side-by-side with the Treo 650. The E61 is definitely wider and a bit longer than the Treo, but it's also thinner and has a larger display (albeit one with slightly lower resolution 320 x 240 vs. 320 x 320). Unfortunately, we weren't able to spend enough time with the E61's keyboard to come away with much of an opinion either way. Click for another shot.

That Nokia looks extremely sexy. What OS does it run? Or is it just a crappy Nokia phone.
Samuel McConnell @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
That Nokia is fugly. So early-Blackberry looking.
Jimmy @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
No external aerial either on the Nokia, that's a big plus in my opinion.
WiFi is certainly a bonus too.
n8 @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Hmm. Better comparison would be the Blackberry. I had a Treo and didn't use it for email too much - not comfortable, required 3rd party POP client, etc. This has support for all the push/always on email systems (as I understand it). And VOIP? Hmm. Interesting...
As for the size, the Treo is already ungainly, and I can't imagine the Nokia will be easier to handle, but there's something very apealing about the slab design. It looks like the keyboard might be a hair more comfortable to use than the Treo too.
Pete @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
It runs Nokia's Series 60 (3rd edition) on top of Symbian OS 9.1.
Iceman @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Ugly phone. If that's Nokia's answer to the Treo, then Palm better hurry up and get a Symbian Treo out.
Eric Merle @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Major differences which should definitely interest the pros: no camera... a lot of companies are preventing the use of those nowadays.
All the right stuff in the right place I say!
newblogspot-com @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
I bet the nokia keyboard is better than the treo. However, I think it's a bit too wide for my taste as a phone.
Jason @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
how about the E70? It's got a higher rez screen than the Treo {352 x 416} and is a lot smaller then the E61 while keeping a {even larger} thumboard. Plus Wifi and 2MP camera...
Scott @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Holy crap, that's like holding a book up to your head every time you want to talk. Put a hinge in the middle and call it a laptop.
Matt @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
The screen on the Nokia is going to get greasy really fast--it doesn't have the slight protrusion at the ear the Treo does to avoid it. Also, I don't know if I want to put something that wide up to my face.
The P990 on the other hand seems to be perfect...
PJS123 @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Edit: "...its the pic WE geeks here at Engadget..."
Sorry, had to.
inhibitech @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
The e61 wins hands down.
iomatic @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
I like the non-aerial. I also like the sleeker design, and the thinness. However, I still like the Treo with its phone and Palm apps.
Also, 25% less screen resolution is not "slightly less".
Phonehoe @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
The P990 SEEMED perfect until yesterday. Now the e61 rules!
Edwin @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
the treo's got better tits
Damien @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
How do you get your treo 650 to look like Mac OSX?
pf @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
It's the pic we here at AOL have been waiting for.
Bert Offers @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Big difference for me is Blackberry connect. Treo doesn't have it, although they keep promising. Also, the current Blackberry devices are crappy phones. At least Nokia knows how to make phones. So I like the E61 and can't wait to get it.
Gregory Pierce @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
If only it had a camera I'd be looking at it for my Treo replacement device because I'm definitely looking for a Treo650 replacement today and I don't want another device that runs PalmOS ... EVER again until the people who do the OS actually expose all of its functionality to J2ME.
Lee Gibson @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
"Big difference for me is Blackberry connect. Treo doesn't have it, although they keep promising."
According to the judgement handed down the other day, Blackberry doesn't have Blackberry connect either.
Live by the patent lawsuit, die by the patent lawsuit. Good riddance, Blackberry!
ryan libson @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
ahh the slow slide towards the crackberry, everyone is bitchin about holding a brick to their ear, this phone aint for folks that hold phones up to their ear. Its for the "borg"... you know the corporate soldier in the khakis that is talkin to loud in the lobby at your local applebees
Jason @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
If you want a camera go with the E70/71. http://europe.nokia.com/nokia/0,,81003,00.html
Not only does it include a 2MP camera, but a LARGER thumboard, and higher resolution screen than the E61. Keeps the WiFi too.
And it's a smaller device.
G. Snyder @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Someone needs to teach #4 (n8) how to use his/her Treo (or maybe the comments are based on a device he/she has never used). The 650 comes with a POP client standard (Versamail handled POP).
Tankut Erinc @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Damn, the Nokia looks sexy.. I would *think* about one, if it could run PalmOS :) Seriously, it probably has better phone apps (such as a sms client that can do receipt notification) and lean pickings otherwise, no touchscreen to top it off.. The wide gamut of Palm software really does spoil.
n8 @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
My, aren't you protective of your little Treo. How cute!
Yes, I mis-spoke when I said "required 3rd party POP client" - I should have said "required 3rd party email client to function well." Y'see, I don't know what you got on your T650, but I had the 600 and the included email program was a little too bare-bones for me. As I remember it was bad with attachments and had no IMAP support - which if you're using it for business is pretty critical. I switched to Agendus right-quick. Snapper was better (if I remember correctly) but pricier too.
None of the email clients approached the RIM functionality (yes, I had one of those to - do you want the s/n to prove it?) so I'm looking forward to seeing if the Nokia is a good mobile email device that can take on RIM, cuz quite frankly their hardware has never impressed me.
Meatwad @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
I dunno about you, but I'm user ChatterEmail on my Treo now and I have full on push-email for pretty much free. I run my own IMAP server already and get tasty email push with no work on my part. Full SSL in the background as well. I highly recommend it.
YellowOne @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
It's sad. Nokia has decided to penetrate the business world with this phone, and it misses out one of the most important features: a camera! Where's their research man??
mikesf @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
No touch screen on the E61. :-(
Bad Nokia! Bad!
Sanyci @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
No camera?! That's the best in it! Because you can buy several Nokia s60 phone with camera, but there wasn't any Nokia s60 smartphone without it - except nGage...
teknogreek @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
one acronym within an acronym word
VoWLAN out of the box as Nokia put it
Internet call over WLAN
Greg @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
No touch screen? This thing better be as cheap as the Treo.
Jake @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
The only advantage I give Nokia is the 'thinness'. I think Palm has underestimated the importance of thinness and should of made the Treo thinner for next years product (at least it wasn't revealed in the Microsoft and Palm conference that this would be the case.) I think that the majority of Treo owners will remain faithful to the Treo brand until a sleeker version comes out. Treo650 still better when you consider the higher resolution, touchscreen, embedded with camera, and the cult-like following that it enjoys. Treos are a whole lot better looking in real life than an lifeless pics.
Michael Williams @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
What are all you nah sayers talking about. I work with a bunch of Treo users everyday and I have yet to see anyone type on those crappy things productively. What I would really like to see is a side-by-side of the E61 and the Moto Q. I'm currently a blackberry user, and treo never had in as far as I'm concerned. i was offered a Treo 650 free of charge to use but I turn down that crappy piece of junk and kept my blackberry.
Melany Edwards @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
The Nokia E61 is gorgeous. I checked out the E61 in action demo at www.nokia.com/business
It does it all.

I would love to see a three way comparo: E61 vs. Moto Q vs. S.E. P990
jack strawman @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
I am a treo650 king! No touchscreen on the E61 would be a dealbreaker for me..plus it is an ugly phone running Symbian..Which is a promising oS but is not used heavily here. It looks sooooo much like a PPC device with no antenna and all..I mean like Puhhhleeeze! Can't touch the sexy ergonomics of our treos.. we want a phone look! We are awaiting the Treo700 palm running Cobalt 6.1 that will have multi-tasking and such and will make us even more loyal. I have done some amazing things with this device that shocked and awed those within my circumference.. No stylus? Not a treokiller by any stretch...nice try though!!
lua @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
putting a slice of bread to my ear. lmao.
Vijay Wanchoo @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
E61 look fantasting and much better than Treo 650. But ofcourse I did not find in your spec sheet if it has touch screet with stylus. Presumably not. Will it have camera incorporated or not.
mike @ Jan 2nd 2006 9:54AM
Finally someone is waking up to the fact that we all don't need a camera built into our phones, these phones are not allowed on offshore rigs or some middle eastern oil fields, also some shipyards, lets hope we can get a better variety of non camera phones in the future.
