DS bricker creator sez, "Sorry!"
Oh DarkFader, you little scamp. First you whip up that now-famous (well, not that famous) DS bricking trojan of yours, then apparently you get ostracized from the homebrew community for wreaking havoc on your peers' devices, and then you apologize? Ok, fine, we'll assume it's not a disingenuous apology, but seriously, the part where you start talking about how those who only use official Nintendo games have nothing to worry themselves about? Way to be patronizing in your letter of apology dude.

Da-da-douchebag!
Some things just shouldn't be attempted, even if you're a pioneer in the field. Handheld game system malware is one of those things. This guy probably felt proud of himself for being the first to create a DS virus, but he's probably not too comfortable about it now that he's been revealed as its creator. Have fun wading through the waist-deep hatemail you'll receive, pal.

It's hard enough to get "fair use" from our devices as it is, without people like him scaring people into toeing the line that the manufacturers espouse.
Trejkaz @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
I was thinking of running this thing.
Thing is, if I send my DS back to factory in a state where it appears like it died of its own accord, then it's free. If I send it back to factory to get the superficial scratches off the screen, it costs me money. Three cheers for an absence of scruples!
WizarDru @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
Pure Idiocy. Not to create it, but to distribute it the way he did. If he had created and then passed it into the main as what it was, no one would be pissed...they'd be impressed.
Now we have a setback in the acceptance of legitimate hacks, over this dumb-ass attempting to use the shield of legitimacy. What self-serving crap...the implication that the only use for hacks are theft or illegitimate software is bullshit. You wanna know why people are pissed at you and why you've instanly lost your credibility within the DS mod community? It's because you dealt them dirt and pissed the pool, jackass.
This kind of passive-agressive non-apology is just as bad as no apology at all.
Samuel McConnell @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
In other news, Adolph Hitler apologized for the Holocaust. Although, he did say those of the master race had nothing to be worried about.

Thats cool, I got 50 invites on gmail. What's his email, I have a feeling he might want one or fourty-nine of my invites.
Personally I think it's genious. Then again, I've been called a dick many times over. The apology shows no spine though.
Tesla @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
Wasn't the program he put it in a ROM loader? If you're pirating games and get pissed that doing so bricks your DS or PSP then you should just STFU. I'm not talking about older system emulation. I'm talking about ROMs for the current system the program is written for. If you try to load PSP or DS roms onto said systems then that's just wrong. I commend DarkFader because from what I gather, his intention was to hurt those who promote piracy. Piracy severely hurts the homebrew scene. It brings down the wrath of Sony's firmware updates and Nintendo's proprietary connection methods.
Dan @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
#5 how dare you compare the holocaust to "bricking" a crappy piece of plastic. There's a difference between a bored teenager trying to prove he can make malware for a system nobody uses and an insane man who murdered 12 million people because he was trying to set up one dominant race.

That's to remove doubts of common people that might be afraid of getting affected.
I'm not saying you can't run homebrew apps or anything. You can get verified homebrew apps from sites such as ndshb.com
BTW... Supercards can be fixed now too.

Wow are people really naive in thinking that this will only be labeled as a ROM loader or Hentai viewer? People who like to screw up your systems diguise things by various methods.
Osiris @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
He did it for a reason.
I think he released in a certain IRC room that he wasnt too fond off and he found that it got spread.
His apology is a lot better than nothing.
chris w @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
Darkfaders an ass. He's only apologizing because the homebrew community ostricized him. otherwise he would'nt give a damn. He claims that "...It was anonymously posted to just a few IRC channels and one forum..." and says he "...should have realized the impact..."; no shit. It would've been taken a lot better if he used his OWN AVENUE (I.E. his own website) to propogate this bullshit.
Don't believe his half-ass apology. It's insulting.
This piece of shit needs to be go back to his neoflash team and continue making pirate roms under the guise of GST that only work for HIS flash cart based design and rip people off. He doesn't give a damn that you pirate, as long as you buy his neoflash and use his pirated rips of roms.
JRM @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
any way he could make a program to unbrick the DS's?
I think that would be a more acceptable apology...
DarkFader @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
#15: I don't care what rumors you believe in. But I'm not involved in the creation of XG/NeoFlash carts and I don't give a damn how well they are selling.
And I apologized because it was a neccesary thing to do. And I can very well run a homebrew scene on my own.
And who the hell keeps posting these kind of news items anyway. Way too much attention for a silly thing that involves just a handful of persons.
Christopher7xii @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
Hey Dark, while you're here, can you take a request? Make a homebrew app that makes the DS not suck? Kthnx
Daniel @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
This is actually a pretty ironic development. The people who are pirating games are quite likely pirating OSs, DVDs, music, and other sorts of media and software. It's also quite likely that these pirates have never been punished before, so all you people who got screwed, basically deserved to have a setback one way or another.
All that said, it was pretty messed up of DarkFader to do that, and it's none of his business to be pulling pranks like this.
Geoffrey Aladro @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
This is kind of like that time that guy made his Mac OS X shareware erase the home directory of the user if a pirated code was entered.

Foppe @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
If I remember correct, DF said exactly what the software did when he released it.
If he really wanted to hurt the scene, he would have been quit about what it did, and build in a timer so it would brick every DS the 28th October 15:37 or something like that.
THAT would have been wreaking havoc.
Brad @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
His website reminds me of the Columbine shooter's websites.
Fiver @ Dec 19th 2005 12:54AM
Well what #25 said and if he wouldn't have made it someone else would have and it would have been a much bigger disaster. Now that we know about the black hole in the NDS security we can at least avoid something like that happening again, maybe now someone *looks at Nintendo with an very angry expression* will actually make an updated firmware that will prevent that.
