Plextor PX-760A 18x DVD±R burner
Speed freaks rejoice. Plextor just dropped the PX0760A 18x
DVD±R (10x DVD+R DL, 6x DVD-R DL) burner in japan. Oh sure,
people will tell ya that anything over 16x will
shred your DVDs to bits. But hey, we're sure it's perfectly safe on your eBay-special 20 cent DVDs… no,
really.
[Thanks, Khattab]

Yeah, I'm guessing Plextor probably thought of the "shred your DVD" problem way before releasing the product...

Sure we need this thang...after all, CDs/DVDs only last forever, don't they?
But if you really want to be bleeding-edge, nipples-scraping-on-asphalt-fast-at-18X, go right ahead...;P

OMG *drooling*... Now if I can just figure out how to hook up my DVD recorder to my computer I'll be all set..
nipples scraping on the asphalt.. OUCHIE!! ;)

So why not just add a second laser/lens array to the drive... technology has proven it can handle multiple drive heads on hard drives...
...why not on dvd burners too?
Software like NERO and such could determine if/what/how it would be written... odd/even drive writes, etc.

There used to a Quad head CD-ROM drive, It doesn't seem like a hugely popular method of increasing speed though for some reason. I'm guessing that better lasers + timing circuitry is more expensive than faster stepper motors.

About multiple lasers, many years ago, Kenwood released CD-ROM drives that had 72x speed (well, it ran 8x with several lasers reading the disc).
If some company released a drive with that kind of pickup system, then it would have less stress/cost to the discs. Of course, the drive would cost the same as a top-of-the-line video card.

CD Burning will be a thing of the past. Bring on Brain-O! No.. has nothing to do with Draino and Tivo. Well.. Sorta.... After effects may feel like you drank Draino, and migranes could be caused because of the Tivo-like menu's in your brain.

One company made a 100x CD-ROM drive. It would basically starting caching files on your hard drive immediately after inserting a CD into the drive, getting a head start and actually performed well. If you don't have space on your hard drive however, you're out of luck.
All this craziness and can't even write a CD-R.
