Don't tell us this is really the Xbox 360's adapter
We saw a lot at Microsoft's Xbox 360 preview event in New York last week and we asked more questions than were probably actually welcome (you can usually tell when the otherwise totally ingratiating Microsoft peeps start wincing and tapping their toes at you). But the one thing we didn't think to ask about was the power adapter. It was missing from sight (how convenient!) and we're sure hoping to god the one that comes with the system isn't the freaking insane brick you see here, which is rumored to be the AC adapter—at least the adapter for the dev kit boxes, anyway. Believe us, by our approximations the thing pictured here is roughly the size of a small nation-state.

lets talk seriously, the only reason to put an external PSU, is to make the console more slim, you know, to say, look what a great design, and for the japanesse that like small things, cause microsoft is crazy for sell more consoles in japan. If they put the PSU inside, well, that will make the size same that the original xbox, and they dont want it, better ugly gamer room , that ugly microsoft console
Its ironic that the guy who talk this
"Oh, and by the way, put the power supply behind the TV, under the couch, behind the chair, etc. This isn't rocket science people. Get over it. God you sound like a bunch of little babies."
a few lines before wrote
"Generally people aren't worried about having an extra inch on the back of their microwave for the power."
Man, you lie to yourself, thats sad.
Just for laugh... With the oil price high, and the hybrid cars raisin up, im asking my self, when the cars go full electrical, that means i will have a PSU the size of half the car, to charge the battery, damn, need a large garage
You guys are a bunch of losers. Jesus, the power supply? It's not like your gonna be looking at it all the time. It just supplies power to the damn thing. Shut up and be grateful that Micro-limp hasn't pushed back the release date of the 360 by another 2 years.
At least it doesn't use a wall wart, which I'd love to see permanently banned.
"If you've seen the brand new HP laptops - the power supply has tripled in size."
I have a brand new one I just inboxed. It is 2" wide, by 5" long. It is half the size of the supplies from last year. It is about as small as a pack of cigs now.
I have no idea what the hell you're talking about.

I think it's a poor design decision. Whoever told Ben above that it was the wave of the future was lying to him. They had 2 choices. Make the power supply into a seperate unit or integrate it into the main unit. Integrating it into the main unit would make it larger but IMO the XBox is already smaller than it needs to be. An external power supply probably adds cost as well. That molded plastic they used is likely more expensive than the metal structure they could have used if the supply was internally mounted in the XBox.

Cars aren't, generally speaking, plugged into the mains.
What the hell is wrong with you people? It's a bleeding power supply. The console goes on the floor or in a cabinet. The power supply goes on the floor or in the cabinet behind it. What is the big deal? It's not hanging off, you bunch of whining morons. Blah blah blah wah wah wah why couldn't they put it inside? Because the console would be that much bloody BIGGER, and you're the freaking idiots who bitched and moaned about the first Xbox being so big in the god damn first place.
If the AC adapter, of all things, is going to stop you from buying an Xbox 360, then you're likely too bloody stupid to use the console in the first place.
Honestly. The AC adapter's going to fuck up the feng shui arrangement of your gaming environment? Fuck off.
I think It's a normal size
Andrew... the pills aren't working... calm down.
It's a poor design decision. Period. Everything else in my audio cabinet has a builtin power supply. Why couldn't the xbox?
Will it be the deciding factor about whether I would buy one? No. But it would have been "nice" not to have to deal with a brick.
"Yes, a large power supply is normal. Don't believe me? Go buy a HIGH-END laptop. "
...I have a high end laptop...my power supply is nowhere NEAR that big, so I have no earthly idea what you're talking about.
To those that compare their external power supply unit's size with the XBOX 360, let me ask you this... Does your external power supply have built-in fans to cool the components? No? Then its moot point to compare the size - they were designed differently.
You can never please anyone cuz they were born anal...especially when arguing about a power supply ...definitely slow day...
Brick my ass, I can land airplanes on that thing.
I know, it really isn't that "big" of a deal (har har), but it is rather funny. Everybody made jokes about how huge the original Xbox was. Now the Xbox 360 is down to a decent size...but it has a ginormous power brick.
Heck, that power brick alone is probably two thirds the size of a Revolution. :D
I'm trying to decide whether I want to buy a PSP, an Xbox 360, or the new iPod this year - I'll only be able to afford one (well, after I buy my new Powerbook and DV cam tomorrow. Yay!) I don't think the XB360's massive power brick will affect my decision in any way. Some of you are blowing this way out of proportion...if that's possible. :D
woah, my xbox 360 also comes with an air-cooled tolberone holder? sweet.
but i doubt it will end up that big in the commercial xboxen
I'll admit my initial reaction was to be put off by the large power supply. In hindsight, though, I'd rather a smaller main unit and the ability to hide a large amount of the bulk (ie. PSU).
Its gigantic. Granted. That I can come to live with. If it has a fan that may be a problem. You see the power brickage sits on the floor in back of the TV where dust and pet hair accumulate. Not a good place to be sucking in air for cooling.
"I think Sony's PS3 will probably have a big PSU as well"
I don't know about that, because if Sony's good at anything right now, it's keeping their PSUs moderately sized and lightweight. But who knows?
This kinda does seem like the start of a new penis war between the gaming consoles. Microsoft wants to be seen as the most powerful, so it's obviously going to need more power.
It's the extension-of-my-manhood adapter!
#62 totally agree , why they dont put it inside, i dont want my pc smaller by having the PSU outside in my desk, i understand in laptops, cause the battery and mobile thing, just like cell phones, but for no mobile, come on, the xbox was a pc, i think the xbox360 is mean to be a laptop, hope it have the battery too.
And for the guy who say thats better rush a console, make it in the way, solve problems design in the way, than wait for a decent console 2 years. I dont like that microsoft have down the life console 20 percent, when the next xbox will be released in 3 years, maybe they sell a new one before revolution. You know how microsoft like to sell us the same shit twice or even more times.
win98 - win98se - winme
age of empires (or like i call it age .75) and expansion (the full game) same with kings y mitologhy
xp home - xp pro - xp media center (2004,2005,etc)
what about office (1 every year)
XBOX ROADMAP
2006 xbox 360 with reduced SPU
2007 xbox 360 gold edition
2008 xbox 630 the next generation
God cant they make a console that last 5 years,
why they dont care about the gamers, not the money, i wont buy a next generation console every 2 years, not even 3 years, come on, is when the best games arrives for a console.
You'd think that they'd make the power supply adapter white too.
oh no, i heard that they are going to put a speck of extra plastic and that it won't be exactly 6.4 pounds. I'm gonna go witht the revolution.
That is the power supply that is with the display models anyways. It is massive. The plug into the back of the Xbox is almost 1" square. I don't know if this is the actual one they will sell to consumers, but it seems a little late not to have the components that are going to be launched WORLDWIDE.
I can't believe that after 74 posts not one of you Geeks noticed that this "power supply" is plugged into the front of the 360. There is no way that Xbox designed the power supply to plug into the front of the unit. Some PS3 geek must have posted this Nerd smut!
jajajajaja
Thats bigger than my slim PS2
I think is for the wave of retro things, remember the size of the atari power thing.
sure, the xbox 360 is next generation, to bad the PSU is a few generation behind.
the power box is massive, any company could bring out a system that is the size of a small moon and be really powerful, still i think the x box 360 is nothing spacial at all its just another xbox, and xbox sucked in the first place. all the games that come out on the x box are for sports fans and licenced games fans because nothing ever come of the xbox that is worth playing. every one that owns an xbox dosnt know what a good game is there been told by j allard what they think are good games, so i say let those ppl waste there money on the xbox 360 and it will just sit in the corner doing nothing just like my xbox.
I thought that was an AC Adaptor, and not the Hoover Dam Power Generator. That system is so revolutionary, that in case of a nuclear emergency, you will have enough power to play your brand new xbox.
