Iomega 160GB and 250GB StorCenter NAS devices
Iomega recently announced their latest foray into the world of
NAS devices, a lineup of hard drives being called
StorCenters, which will initially ship in 160GB and 250GB capacities (with promised 1TB storage in later revs).
StorCenters are Windows, Mac, and Linux-friendly, and can wirelessly pipe content to home theater equipment through the
use of a digital media adapter. Iomega is promoting these drives as alternatives to dedicated media servers, and will
begin shipments in November, for as-yet-undetermined prices.

Odd thing is that's the same drive sizes they used before in the exact same thing. I actually have a 250 and it's great as long as you can put it somewhere that dampens the sound . . . the fan can be a little loud. Otherwise it's an awesome device. Why use USB when you have this hooked to a WIFI router with a connection that goes just as fast as USB?
Just as long as the price is much less than the $500+ price of the Maxtors shown earlier today, I'll be happy.
You spelled "theater" wrong....theather lol

#1-- Are WiFi (802.11g) signals really as fast as USB 2.0? I've been debating between getting external HDD and getting a NAS. My 3 yr old laptop only has single USB 1.1 port. I could buy a USB 2.0 upgrade PC card, but I haven't found one that will fit while I also have my WiFI PC card installed. If I could know for sure that the NAS solution would work just as well as a USB 2.0 external HDD, I'd be happy to eat the extra cost and go for the NAS (especially since I then wouldn't have to antje up around 50 bucks just for the USB 2.0 upgrade card.)
11g is much slower than USB2. I have the Linksys NSLU2 and I can read/write at max 15Mbits/s. USB2 can do (theoretically) 480Mbits/s.
It's ok to stream movies over wireless to your laptop, but you can't even watch a slideshow of your photos since each photo takes a couple seconds to load. I also use it to backup my laptop wirelessly every night.

No. I've been debating an upgrade as of late too. I want something I can do backups via USB 2.0 but something that also serves as a NAS for my media box. It seems usually on or the other so If you're planning on doing backups with NAS, well, 100Mb isn't going to cut it. I'd recommend the Buffalo gigabit NAS, iStation I think it's called. Anyone know if this bad boy is giga?
