The PSP Smart Charging Dock
You know, we're not gonna tell you how to live your life, so if you want to spend $15 of your hard earned dollars on the "PSP Smart Charging Dock"—a PSP dock sure to drive away all but your most loyal compatriots with its intense gaudiness—be our guest. Just don't say we didn't warn you about sudden losses in guests at your place of residence. Unless that's what you're actually going for, anyway.

The moral of this story? Don't feed PSPs to flamboyant 14400 baud modems.
lol what a waste of money.. i don't see how it's "smart" either
Hot DAMN BEECH! Now I can rice out my PSP! PLEASE tell me the 5 red LEDs on the bottom strobe?! Never again will you have to be looked down upon by your fellow PSPers. Put those mofos in their place with the R-Dock. Word G.
Sorry. I'm done now. ;-)
Seriously though. I WILL smack the first person I see with one of these things. It’s the core experience of fugly. Isn't that the light pattern they put at the end of most runways?
How can anything with so many LEDs on it have 'smart' as part of it's product name?
Surely an oxymoron?
i think it doubles as a disco ball...
i bought one 2 months ago simply because I wanted a dock.
The leds strobe but that can be switched off.
And the green or blue light indicators are not as harsh as you imagine them.
Mine is black sadly, i wanted white.
Why is it that every story I read on here about the PSP is either,
1.More shit to buy for it
2.Movies for the PSP
3.Problems with it wether it be no games or bricking.
Is there any positives about the PSP? I'm really starting to wonder.
All you need is Devil's Mountain, a keyboard, and the ability to play B flat, C, A flat, (octave lower) A flat, E flat.
I don't see why it "sooo bad". It would be cool to dock it (and charge it at the same time) when I am not using it. I certainly would not take it with me outside the house. The black does not look that bad. Seems functional, and only 15 bucks. Hmm
OTAM: Sony is forcing to buy accessories for the PSP. The only accessory I bought for my PSP was a 1GB Memory Stick. How is that different from an iPod (P.S. You don't have to buy a dock, too.) or a PDA? You just buy accessories that you might want.
Errr...correciton on the first sentence. There should be a "not." "Sony is not forcing.."
Now, if only it had some games for it, you'd be all set!

It makes a nice cheese dip.
It looks interesting... At $15 it might be worth a try!
What's with all the dumb accesories? Where are the games?
ooo, shiny!
Cool!
I disagree, they forced you to buy that 1g mem stick when they decided not to package anything higher than 32mb with the system. Sure, it holds saves.. but c'mon they knew this thing was a little jukebox so why be stingy with the memory? Because being stingy sometimes makes you rich.. unfortunately the wealth is only monetary.
Good idea, Bad Product...
hmmmm anything good about the PSP? Well let's see, since we can play PSP games for free pretty much there is also a very high possibility of FREE GBA games too! FREEEEEEEEEE that will beat anything that is in low cost. FREEEEEEEEEEEEE
18.) Don't want start a war here. ;-P The 32MB is definitely enough for video game saves. How do you know that all the PSP consumers will use the expensive to produce 1GB Memory Stick and use the PSP as a portable media center? It is best to be conservative on the items that included for the sake of Sony's stockholders and balance sheet. (Not a stockholder or related to Sony not even a fan just happens to be a customer on their video game products) I'm person that rather pay just a PSP minus the "Value" Pack. (I don't use the majority of the items on "Value" Pack expect for the case.)
It is like Apple is doing with the iPod. They are less accessories that were previously package on previous iPods such as the AC adapter, remote controller, and the dock. You can charge with the USB cable so why have to chargers blah blah mentality. It saves money.
It wouldn't be so bad if there were more functionality to it. For instance, if it had an RCA jack in the back that allowed you to hook it up to your stereo, with perhaps a remote to control volume and playback, then this peripheral would work. The PSP system came with a corded remote, but using a wireless one that you can use from a couch would be great. I guess sometimes people get confused with what can make rather than what they should. Even if someone uses my idea to make a product and I don't get credit for it, at least its better than making products that don't innovate.
hehe Momus.
i don't understand what's so awful about that charging dock. the one person who's come in here saying he's actually bought the thing seems to like it.
if i had a psp i'd probably invest in that charging dock as well. it doesn't look half bad, and with something as sexy as the psp it would be nice to be able to charge it and display it at the same time.
maybe you should try something before you post an entire article BASED on criticising it. just a thought.
15 bucks? its good, if i was sony that would be 20 or 25 dollars
Wow, a negative comment about a Sony related product on Engadget? This is a first :-p
Needless to say that if it had an Apple logo on it, the article would read along the lines of: "Here it is, another brilliant iPod accessory that every self respected iPod owner should purchase. It goes by the name of Smart Charging Dock and justifiably so: it lights up while you are charging your iPod! And all that for $150! You know you want it."
Mine's a pint. Cheers
To the "where are the games?" folks:
They're at the store.
A quick check of the Best Buy website shows they sell 69 titles for the PSP. According to Sony, there have been 197 titles released for the PSP worldwide so far.
As far as the dock goes, I'm suprised there is enough juice left to charge the battery after powering all those LEDs ;)
I have a PSP, and I REALLY love my Burnout. I got it when I took my Samsung Mp3 player back to the store, and got it to use as an MP3 player replacement with movies and games on the side. I got burnout just so I wouldn't be bored waiting on the memory stick. Turns out the thing is great. Picking up another game today.
Well wether you buy it or not every one should stop complaining on the functionality of the device and the peripherials to buy, and for those who say they force to buy memory stick, Sony announced that during xmas and there after there will be a premium package for 299.99 (compared to 249.99) that icludes everything in the lesser package plus a 1 gig memory stick for 50 bucks more rather than buying the $100 compatible version.

I have a PSP and personally I would never buy this dock, based on the fact that I already have a dock with speakers on it. It's true, that it is very funny how engadget insults everything that that has to do with PSP, like the LEDs on this dock. But when we all look at the old customizable Nokia phones where face plates stores made so much money off LED face plates or antennas for the phone then its not a funny issue. It's like it bothers them inside that the PSP is better than the DS: making a video bashing PSP and doing votes DS vs PSP ,well obviously on this site DS wins. All I hear is that it's not the graphics its the games, well why the heck did they make the DS with better graphics. The very first Gameboy still worked! Actually so did my first Sega Master.
just to let you all know.. for the Xmas period (in Europe at least) sony are packing the 1gig mem stick with the PSP for 215 quid.. thats 15 quid more than the value pack and you get the gig stick.. good news to those who don't have one.. and hit in the balls to those who do, but it's going to make the Xmas demand for the PSP HUGE!
It's going to be called the 'GIGA pack'..
to 'OldDude'
just a quick check of the best buy website. Didn't count all the games - just the 'same old EA sports rereleases, generic turbo driving game 12 and shoddy movie tie ins that act as drinks coasters rather than games.' A total of 32 of them. That's half the current games out for it.
So yeah, where are the games?
I like it.. I'm in no hurry to buy it, but if I see it locally I might pick it up.
I'm a gadget addict and the more lights and flashy things a gadget has, the more it catches my eye, and if it does what it's supposed to do, then where's the harm in liking it? I think this would look pretty kick ass all lit up on your desk with the lights down low, playing my Sisqo mp3's while me and my lover feed eachother grilled cheese and tomato soup.
