Sling Media's next Slingbox slated for CES 2006
Yeah, we're finally at that point in the year when we can start discussing CES 2006, and according to Philips — who
is apparently supplying chipsets for Sling
Media — we can expect the next Slingbox at
CES 2006 in January. The release is a little vague about what's going down specifically, but it looks like we can
expect a device at least capable of 480p/576p component video capture and 1080i/720p downscaling (i.e. reverse
HDTV). Guess we'll have to wait n' see (or poke n' prod the peeps at Sling to give us the scoop).

As long as they give us mac support
THis kind of pickle's my interest: Anybody know of a service based in the US where they rent you access to cable service and stream it ot you via the net?
I would basicly like to watch say HBO here in UK.
I have already talked to a friend and he is willing to host a machine for me that will record and broadcast any channels I want. In return I will pay half the cable bill. Only problem is the upstream is not beefy enough (768 kbits up). FAster connections are not an option.
Does anybody know if a colocation facility would provide cable connectivity to the servers? :-)
Yeah...how about that Mac support promised at launch?
I guess Mac support is still in the works. Hopefully it won't be vaporware much longer. I would buy this in a second if there was support for the Macintosh.
Vaporware.

I'm dying for this thing - ON MY IBOOK!!!!!!
I like me them french-fried potaters, um hum...
768Kbps upstream is plenty for the Slingbox. Locate a DVR at your friend's house and attach a Slingbox to it. You'll have no problem watching HBO on that connection.
I have one which averages 500K upload to my friend - Being in Europe he is happy to get any North American TV and this is fast enough for casual plipping around the dial.
I am waiting for a PAL version so I can watch footy from the UK.
Overall, this box is worth the money and does everything you could want including remote control of various DVR's etc.

What will the updated version do that the current one will not?
I was about to go out and get one tomorrow.
Please advise.
i just ordered an old one off amazon ! doh i want the new one now,
Any news regarding the possible Windows Mobile client for the SlingBox?
What will the update/upgrade have that the current model does not have?
Hi there, Im here to help answer a few questions and clear up some possible confusion. Earlier this week, Philips announced that Sling Media would use Philips tuners in an upcoming product (or products), to be shown at CES 2006. In the same press release, Philips announced that the Philips decoders are capable of wonderful features, such as component video capture, and more.
While its certainly fun to speculate that were already done with the first Slingbox and have a new one ready, theres a much simpler answer. If I take the knowledge of this Philips silicon tuner and combine it with the knowledge of Sling Medias just-started PAL beta test, and whip out my handy Occams Razor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam's_Razor), its a lot more likely that the upcoming Slingbox is one for countries that use the PAL TV standard.
To be clear: we are not commercially launching a next-generation Slingbox at CES 2006.
I know this isnt as sexy and exciting as a brand-new Slingbox to show off, but, as they say, all in good time. For existing, soon-to-be, or speculative Slingbox customers, dont worry, youve got a lot of life left in that little silver box!
Stuart: if you are sincerely interested in the PAL beta test, shoot me an email (my first name at slingmedia.com).
Kasper: we havent formally announced anything new about Windows Mobile, but I can say that, at the very least, well be in public beta testing before the end of the year!
Best,
Jeremy
So, the Windows Mobile support will not require a new Slingbox? Will wireless carriers like Verizon and Sprint be able to prevent us from using the slingbox and our Windows Mobile 5 PDA phones?
This is ridiculous. I bought the Sling Media assuming they would support Macs as they said they would. They keep releasing new products, yet still no Mac support. Deliver what you promise BEFORE new products!!!
I enjoy the box on my PC laptop, but would use it a lot more on my Mac in the den.
