How to fix an LCD backlight for $20

Cold cathode bulb

So we're just as teed off as you are when we watch an LCD die the slow death of a waning backlight, an especially hard loss to swallow due to the fact that the dying part actually costs about $20. InventGeek.com has a guide for replacing the dang thing yourself, and while we're not quite brave enough to attempt, and are not at all suggesting that you do such a thing, it couldn't hurt (much) to give it a try on that dead 15-incher you've got lying around. Excuse us for sounding like your mom, but you'll be dealing with a cold cathode bulb, which contains some mercury that you don't really want to be spraying around, along with the usual niceties of delving into the electronic guts of a monitor, but if you do happen to make it out alive, please let us know how it went mmkay?
