Hitachi's finger-vein reading car door handle
We'll start off by promising not to employ the overused (mostly by us) "now they'll have to cut off your ____ if
they want to steal your ____" line that gets dragged out everytime something new gets secured biometrically. Now that
you have our solemn vow to dispense with such foolishness, peep Hitachi's prototype of a vein-reading car door handle
(on display at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show); Hitachi seems to be all about eschewing fingerprint readers for finger-vein
readers (probably due to their smaller data files), seeing how they've planted the devices in ATMs, security doors, and
a laptop that we spotted at CEATEC Japan. Apparently the
door handle is curved to guide the user's hand into the proper position for an accurate reading, although information
regarding the system's reliability has not been released by Hitachi. We still feel safer with our remote
opener/starter, however, because you never know when heads are gonna take their beef with the Engadget mafia to the
streets.

Thats pretty freaky i dont want my vains read
Okay, so even if someone does cut off your ____ to steal your ___, it would have to be freshly cut if the vein readers were to be able to read it. Truly innovative, in my opinion.
So much for that cliche, huh?

Yeah, fingerprints are much different from veins, dear.
Veins have blood. Cutting off someone's finger would most likely result in a loss of blood from their finger. The print would still be there, but the veins wouldn't be up and running. I'm not saying Hitachi's done it, but it's a good idea.
Don't "ahem" me.
Good idea? Maybe...but what about where I live where the temperatures can drop to -60F. I can tell you one thing: I'm not taking off my gloves to open a door in those temps. Besides my body will probably start shinking up those veins in order to preserve my body heat, thus screwing up the "vein map". The last thing I want in subzero temps is to be locked out of my car.

What if your finger gets burned or cut accidently ^_^ ?
~ hello..
~ Hi, Hitachi customer care welcomes you.
~ yes, I need to get my car door open .
ROFL =))
I wasn't "Aheming" you, just the whole biotech locking idea.
Looks more like a handle to a cyrogenic freezer than a car handle...
Related to #5, what happens when you walk outside in the middle of winter to find your car covered in snow/ice... Would you have to completely remove all traces of ice from the handle to get a solid scan?
This is encouraging
Cut off your hand? Seems harder than just taking your keys off you.
What about people in the northern States who wear gloves - or people who like to lend their cars to their friends?
