The Airlift ceiling fan
Kudos to the Monte Carlo fan company for their brushed steel Airlift fan featuring polycarb blades. Says it includes
a wall mounted remote control with reverse function and…oh hey, a "down light control" which hopefully accelerates and
lowers the whole assembly into a makeshift buzz-saw.

This is SO COOL! I want one.
wicked!
Now you too can recreate that scene from Raiders of the Lost Arc in the comfort of your own home!
This is cool. I wonder of the brightness between when the fan is in neitral and spinning. Still, what a great idea!
Very cool, but $500.00(US)?!?
Just loosen up some of the screws so the the centripital force overwhelms them at the highest speed and voila! No more unwanted houseguest!
Looked at many designer fans lately? $500 is about right. I won't pay that, but some do. For $500, the damn thing better have it's own IP address and be able to ab controlled via a web interface.
It's the Pegasus Device!!!!

Too bad it is mind-numbingly ugly. It looks like something you would get at a drugstore - and I am a big fan of modern design. When the blades are down, ,it looks likea chandelier pilfered from the set of Dynasty, and when the blades are up it looks like a cross between a street light and, I don't know, a Cuisinart. Blech.
Lol, this is why I read this site daily...you guys add much-needed humor to every-day news items. Keep it up.
Btw, this is actually a pretty cool idea.
This isn't exacly something new - we sold a Fan in John Lewis almost exactly the same a couple years ago made by a company called "Fantasia". I have to admit it's pretty cool though.
if you all would google it, you can find it for $399 US, not $500. still expensive, but $100 cheaper than $500
Don't any of you guys watch Mythbusters? You just can't chop off someone's head with a ceiling fan.
They even made one themselves with aluminum blades and a lawnmower engine and it still wasn't enough. It did cause a pretty nice neck injury, though.
Very neat indeed. Just like #11 said, nothing really new. They Just copied the Fantasia design. But the real question is, for $500.00 how much air does it move? a good 50" to 56" ceiling fan with these many blades most have a motor of at least 188 mm X 25mm in size, to delivered a good amount of air. This baby breaks the record for more blades on a ceiling fan, the record holder was the defunt Homestead Fan Co. with 6-blades.
I admit I didn't follow the link, and maybe this is addressed elsewhere. But if the blades generate their lift through the spin, that means
1) it moves less air than fixed blades, because much of the energy involved is being used simply to lift the blades.
2) it can't spin backwards. which is a bummer because sometimes you want to reverse the fan.
Now if they only could make a fan that would dust itself, that would be cool.
It looks like the fan would hang pretty low. Unless you have a high ceiling, I could see it as being one more obstacle to have to duck under.
#13 It may not take your head off, but I bruised my hand real good one time trying to put a shirt on.
