NHK shows off some live 7680 x 4320 "Super Hi-Vision" TV in Japan
This is totally not replacing HDTV for a good million years or so, but NHK
of Japan has demoed some "Super Hi-Vision" TV running at 7680 x 4320 — 16 times the resolution of that lame old 1080i
your grandparents are talking about. The demo involved a live feed from a couple of custom built cameras based around 8
megapixel CCDs, with their 24Gbps signal being chopped into 16 HD signals and sent 161 miles over a fiber optic network
to the the demo site at the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi Japan. So the good news is that they can rock the live TV
with this technology, but the gooder news is that this isn't even out of the labs yet, so that brand spanking new HDTV
of yours won't be going out of style anytime soon.

This is absolutely nuts, i wish my computer monitor could display that resolution, hmmm 2010 release date maybe?
That better be 4320p and not 4320i! True videophiles wouldn't touch that interlaced junk. Where are my 4320p sets, Sony?
dear sir.
i have problem with my digital camera 4320. how to restart the camera because the lens erro.
thank you so much.
Fatinha.
I wonder if you can actually see the difference unless you want to explore something on the screen with a microscope
I think this was the same one that NHK was showing at the NAB show in Vegas in April.
It was pretty impressive - they were showing some demo scenes, one of which was some people having a picnic in a field - you could see every blade of grass... pretty impressive.
"Where are my 4320p sets, Sony?"
In the labs, Sony are trying to DRM every pixel.
god dammit engadget, WHERE IS THE VIDEO LINK!?
Being that NHK is Japan's equivalent of PBS, and supported by taxes, here is Japan's Taxpayer money at work. . .

I remember people like you used to call HDTV "unnecessary" when HDTV came out. Three decades later, you can call those people stupid, but possibly you are now being one of them. History repeats like that.
NHK has been developing SHDTV for decades as a successor of HDTV which it also had pioneered in 1970's. NHK IS the main contributer of HDTV. It is saying SHDTV runs at 7680x4320 with 60fps and it need at least a decade more of research to make it affordable. Compare it with IMAX3D (5616x4096@48), it has just little bit higher res, doesn't it?
It's all for re-re-re-released and re-re-re-remastered Starwars movie, kid.
With a screen 76 inches (over six feet) across horizontally, that's still more than 100 pixels per linear inch. Looks like computer monitor resolution for 8 foot screens... but who can see dots that small from so far away?
This is crazy.Im already amazed by 60" HD Tvs imagine seeing one of these.
What a coincidence.I was talking about this today with my friend and was thinking what it would be called.

a slashdot user posted this:
"This stuff was on Discovery Channel months ago... and NHK's plans are to use it for movie theaters. Availability for home system was not discussed and it will certainly take a while, if it ever does get there. The DC overview of the UHD system did not say much about the audio system that went with it though. (Nor did it go into any sort of details about how the system was setup for the demonstrations.)"
using it for movie theaters is brilliant, it makes so much sense. The reason people started going to movie theaters in the 70s after Starwars came out was for the experience, but now you can have a BETTER experience in your own home, so there's no reason to pay $10 for something worse. But if some American theater company caught on to this... I garuntee we'd see a resurgence in the movie theater market.

enzo, how can you see somting 'better' at home right now? do you have some Christie 2k projection system installed? nice one.
4k projectors are being trialed in theaters now, 4k x 3k...thats quite a nice resolution
Once Digital Film gets more penetration with filmmakers the quality of film in general will become higher.
F you, NHK. My HDTV just committed suicide. It left a note... said it now felt completely inferior.
I saw this in action at the World Expo in July - and it's worth every pixel. They had a 'near-live' demonstration where they'd film everyone standing in line, getting them to wave at a camera placed high up, then walk you into a cinema and show you exactly how stupid you looked outside.
I thought my HD plasma was impressive, but I was totally blown away by the res on a decently sized cinema screen where I was sitting way up the back. Whenever this does arrive, you will notice the difference - and yeah, like #15 puts it, your HDTV will commit suicide in shame.
It`s impressive - but the live display is LONG over. The expo ended a few months ago.
I've got one of these displays, but it's only a 14" screen and it cost me £7000. I feel like I've been ripped off.
This is just what NHK needs... shows featuring local karaoke sing-off contests will look infinitely better in super HD! Considering their average audience demographic age is probably over 60, I don't really think that the resolution will be appreciated. :)
