LG's SavaJe JAVA-based smartphone
Symbian, Windows Mobile, Palm, embedded, step aside, there's a new player in town in the mobile OS market, and they go by the name of SaveJe. We've heard nary a peep from them outside some bits here and there about ramp-up business partnerships and what not, but they've got to be stoked to have a functioning LG handset to show off. The J2ME-based OS is powering a rather chubby looking device which features a 176 x 220 display, 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, SD slot, media players for MP3, AAC, H.263, MPEG-4. Now we'll see how long before the first SavaJe devices make it to the US (or if there's room for another smartphone OS — we think there may just be).

Hey, I know those guys—I applied for a job with them last year. IIRC, their OS is Pure Java (presumably they've got a JVM somewhere...), and they originally intended it not just for phones, but for other wireless devices, too. Their schtick seems to be customizability: since the whole thing is Java, it's easier for phone manufacturers, and wireless carriers, to customize the phone.
(I'm not convinced that Java is easier to work with, but it's certainly easier to hire people with Java on their r?m?)

that thing must come w/ like .5 gigs of ram
take that rokr w/ your 100 song limit.
J2ME is usually more difficult to work with, but this claims to support Swing, and that's awesome.
