iDoom now available on iPod nano
iPod nano owners lube up your chainsaws 'cause iDoom is now available for your fragging kicks. Check check, check
out the vid 'cause performance is rockin' compared
to the previous release we saw running on
older gen iPods. Caution: this requires
iPodLinux (podzilla) which is a
fairly risk free install in our experience but could void your warranty. The 5G (video) iPod is not supported nor is
sound … yet. But what does that matter to you, soldier … you're the only human left alive!

Cem @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
fantastic development! What's next? Buy a game and get the soundtrack for free? ;)
Rami @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
Hey, the link to the video crashes the Mozilla Firefox browser. And no sound? I love DOOM, but I can't give them money and validate that goof up.
Phil @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
I remember downloading Doom from the internet the day it was released on the ID software ftp site and it struggled a bit on my 386DX40, I'm surprised no-one ever tries to get windows 3.1 running on devices like the iPod.
Matt @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
I want to keep my warranty.

"Hey, the link to the video crashes the Mozilla Firefox browser."
What version are you running? It works fine for me on 1.0.7...
Rich @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
Rami mentioned above that the video crashed Firefox. Well, it crashed Firefox and IE on my system.
Dylan @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
At first I couldn't play it in either firefox or IE. Tried updating quicktime but it said it was up to date. So installed the latest version of iTunes and presto - the video works. Kinda. It now crashes firefox (1.5 RC1) but if you save the file and play it off your desktop or wherever, it works fine.
And boy does iDoom on the nano look shweet! Its worth the update (of itunes) just to watch it..

I wish they would make freeware games for the ipod. Period. We want more than solitaire and Parachute. And I won't pay for them.
Chris Coleman @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
While on the surface this seems like one of those things that people do just to do it, I think the iPod wheel probably wouldn't be the worst controller for a game like Doom. The controls are simple enough, and I imagine that you move with the wheel, fire with the center button, and switch weapons with one of the wheel buttons. It seems like it might actually be decent.
Chris @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
To those with crashing problems:
It's Apple's fault on this one (and I'm a Mac fan). The plug-in is broken on some Windows installations. When you try to view a movie that has been encoded in .MP4 it hangs the plug-in.
I have the same problem on Firefox 1.5, Firefox 1.07, and IE 6 on the PC at my office when I try to view this page:
http://www.apple.com/ipod/features.html
My suggestion is writing to Apple and complaining about QuickTime crashing in Windows.

strap one to each eye, and have stereo vision!
Tushar Dayal @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
Why would it void your warranty? All you have to do is reformat your iPod and no one could ever tell you had linux on it
TIMMAH! @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
Hey and the screen scratches add a eerie ambiance to the game! Sweet!
Adam @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
Could anyone give me a link or tell me how I get Linux on my Nano? Also, is this Doom game a free download once you have Linux? Or do you have to pay for it? Linux is free, right?
bdaddy @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
WTF? I can't see the video. I downloaded the latest itunes+Quicktime, d/l the video to my mac desktop...nothing seems to work. Anybody else solve this problem?
Hofele @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
Right click and save the video file. It crashed my firefox browser (1.0.6) also.
Alain @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
What is the Ipod Linux site... I thought it was ipodlinux.org, but that takes me to a wikipedia site... i am really confused if anyone can help it would be great
Joe @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
if you go to the ipodlinux.org site it says the nano isn't supported so then how are you putting linux on it if it isn't supported?
David @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
To #20: Yes, ipodlinux.org is the official site. You can tell because it says "Welcome to the home of the iPodLinux Project!" in big bold text at the top.
Hope this helps.
homer @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
doom cool, my first game on pc. when apple computers were just for rich people.
David @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
I had a problem with the video too. If you go to:
http://idoom.hyarion.com/videos.php
And click on the divX type video. Then it will work for Firefox and IE, using windows media player. But the only video with divX is for the nano.
james @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
I havent played it so i dont know how the controller is setup but here's my suggestion: 1. use your left thumb on the left half of the scroll wheel to move left and right
2. use the center button to fire with right thumb.
3. scroll wheel on right side will move you forward or backward (can the sensor sense right and left at the same time?)
4. right button of scroll wheel to change weapons

I downloaded and installed ipodlinux on my nano even though it was mentioned on the site that it wasn't "officially" supported..im kinda stuk now, windows wont recog. the nano and whenever i boot it it gives me a weird folder icon with a link to apple's support site.
So ipodlinux DOESN't work on the nano, conventionally, prolly with some workarounds it does...i didnt know that. Anyway i discovered something kewl though...while the ipod is booting...press the "Action" and the "Rewind" key simul. and your taken to the Ipod Diagnostics screen, lotsa kewl tests and scans basically to mess around with the pod...but I STILL DONT HAVE EITHER LINUX NOR APPLE FIRMWARE!!!! argh...
I downloaded the latest updater software and it just says "Ipod Service Error" and closes, i cant even restore the thing....anybody who knows better?
Edward @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
#27 put it into "disk mode" then upse the latest (october 2005) ipod updater to restore the firmware.
To reset the nano you press and hold Select and Menu for about 6 seconds. Once you reset the nano, press Select and Play to throw the iPod into Disk Mode—similar to the Mac’s FireWire Target Disk Mode where the iPod is forced to mount on the Desktop.
Lots of info on this available. Search on "ipod nano disk mode"
miscblogger @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM

Haha! Funny guy.
It's hard though to cover up the tracks and reformat, if I drop it on the floor and the sensitive LCD-display goes black.
Nathan @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
The Nano isn't officially supported for ipodlinux, but i got it working on mine.
You can look around the ipodlinux site and find a guide or two on how to do it. I would link it but can't remember which guide i used, sorry.
However, if you brick it, this has worked for every kind of FUBAR i've gotten my nano so far:

Sound is not supported on an Ipod, funny :)
Jobbe @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
I made that video in iMovie and just exported it, nothing fancy. The video doesn't have any sound, since the game doesn't have sound support yet. We thought that hearing us clicking the iPod-wheel when we were playing wasn't to interesting.
