Firefly hits Cingular
It may not be the coolest phone in town — hell, your kids may not even want it — but if you've had your eye on a
Firefly for making sure your little schmoopies
are safe, looks like Cingular's got 'em, and for $50, too. We'll probably see that price drop below the free-threshold
once they're actually in stores (and with holiday promotions you could walk out getting who knows how much cash paid
out in rebates on top), but really, who can put a price on your child's wellbeing?
[Thanks, Dave]

oooooooh same sex couples are not going to be happy with this one after looking at those little pictures....
:-)
Rich @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Hmm, maybe same-sex couples don't let their kids roam free...
Great idea, I might just get one to give to the parents to keep in touch with me!

Heh I saw the headline and thought they were offering the theme to the TV show Firefly as a ring tone or something.
Chris Kalan @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Yeah, Rogers in the great white north has had them for a couple of months now.
Rick @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
OLD NEWS, these things have been for sale at the local Target (with Cingular pay as you go service) for almost a year now...
Ryan @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
#1 - You seem to be confused about the icons. They don't represent "Mommy" and "Daddy" - they are "Daddy in drag" and "Daddy not in drag". Get hip with the times!
jfox @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
i wouldn't use that phone if someone paid ME.
Wurx @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Yeah, mommy and butch mommy. So all is well.
Scoobydoo @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Yeah, I don't get it either, we've had a Cingular/Firefly booth in the local mall for well over a year now, and as the previous poster said, Target has had them for ages... Perhaps a regional thing?
Robert @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Yah, Anyone rember Cingulars PTT phones and Answer Tones, well today was the day for it and where is it? Not here, not anywhere.
DuckDuck @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
What does a schmoo-pie taste like?
Nitz @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
I actually got one of these things because it's super small and has all these blinky lights - it's the perfect going out phone. When you roll up with the blinky kid's phone and answer it as if you're Zoolander, all the chix think you're money. Just swap the SIM card with my Treo for all the other times, no problem.
sunz @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
schmoo-pies are gooey inside .. i think
Andrew @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Just think of these were featured in a hollywood flick -- say vin diesel handing one of these to his daughter who later gets kidnapped...
"press button if you need daddy"
Follow up by putting the thing on every morning talkshow in the US and you're guaranteed to have a hit product that will spawn a herd of knock-offs- instantly boosting your brand name in the process.
In the end this product will fail because of poor marketing.
Jim @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
I've seen these at Target too.. but NOT with a Cingular logo. It's really all about corporate branding to the lil ones.. make sure they're "brand loyal" when they're 7.
eskimo @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Dang, for a second I thought this was going to be an article about the greatest show ever made. But now... I'm thinking just the opposite.
I just have one question, what's keeping a little 5-year-old from taking off and dropping it somewhere? Even the youngest of children know when they're being monitored for their "wellbeing"...
"Two by two, hands of blue..."

I thought Firefly was a virus when I read the headline. Then, I began to wonder why a virus would target only a specific carrier.

Wait a minute. Those figures have two arms! Amputees of the world should join in protest!
Ridiculous? Yeah. So let's quit being so P.C.

"httphttp is not a registered protocol"
Might want to fix the anchor on the image.
So...what happens if the little 7-year-old loses the phone like his glasses and someone not-so-begnin picks it up?
Wry Cooter @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Actually I would translate those ideograms as someone about to take out garbage, someone glad garbage has been taken out.
Mark @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Being a Same Sex partner with two kids, it doesn't necessairly offend me they put the two little pics of Mom and Dad. It's traditional, and last I saw a kid has to come from a woman. However, a lot of kids live with grandma, grandpa, their aunt, etc. So the phone isn't necessairly non-PC, as it is leaving out a huge chunk of parents. The Verizon Wireless LG MIGO is a nice option. It has 4 presets instead of two, and touts the option for your kid to call four people in case Mom, Dad, or whomever is unavialable. IT's nice.
christ @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
wow. its amazing how we all see a picture and think the exact same thing. i was about to write a comment about how gays should protest this phone... and then there are 20 comments already written to that effect. amazing.
