iPod nano now does video too
So, last week we told you that iDoom is now running on the iPod nano. If you brave souls took the plunge, then you are now ripe for playing vidz as well since the ipodlinux video player has now been updated to support the nano in addition to all other iPods. You're limited to playing raw AVI files only until they slam in the other codecs. However, playback is said to be "quite smooth" and the sounds works so you can rock that penguin all proper like.

Just in time to get you back to the zoo - too damn hot for a penguin to be just, runnin' around.

Wow that's cool.., now why the hell don't apple just make the dam nano play video, if it is actually possible.... I just don't get why you would Not let people do it if the device can do it.
sracer @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
I currently watch movies and TV shows on my WindowsMobile smartphone (Audiovox SMT-5600)... I can get a 90 minute movie, 6 episodes of Seinfeld, 3 hours of music, bible software, and pocket street maps on a 512MB mini-SD card.
2GB would be plenty of room for video and audio, for me anyways. My smartphone movies weigh in at 120MB for a 90 minute movie... excellent video and audio. I suspect that the same film optimally encoded for Nano playback would weigh in at under 100MB.
Of course if people are going to get dumb and place hi-res, hi-bitrate videos on it, you'd be lucky to get 1 movie.

Crazyglue, the reason why Apple doesn't equip the iPod Nano with video capabilities is for several reasons..
One, I don't think a lot of people want to be watching video on such a tiny little screen (except for people who download this hack). Think about it...when they equipped the regular model they put emphasis on making the screen larger to be more suitable for video.
Two, Apple wants to give you an incentive to shell out just a few more dollars so you can have the luxury of Video. Someone earlier said it best...a 30gb Video iPod is only $50 more than a 4gb Nano. It's called up-selling. They've been doing it with practically all their model lines. When I originally bought my first iPod (3g 30gb) they did this by providing a case and inline remote to the higher models exclusively.
I've owned 3 now, but I'm a bit disappointed in the fact that I have to buy a case and a dock separately for my 60gb iPod Video, but I digress;)

OMG the noob uses maxtor... anyone who's anyone knows only Seagate will suffice
Aaron @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
OMG you double posted! Anyone who's anyone gets it right the first time. :)
Zex_Suik @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
Okay, I dig that it does video.
A really useful hack that someone should do, AND sell as an upgrade service is:
are you ready?
A memory card slot.... yeah wtf? why doesn't it have one? just slap an sd slot on it and everyone's happy. Do it right and it might just double the thickness of the nano
derrick @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
Hey, i read some where a few months ago and saw that the 4g had video but no sound and was wondering if it hassound yet ot not
-thanks!

I just spent a couple hours trying to get video to work on my photo. After a couple of failed attempts (and reformats) i finally got it to work.
The first thing i did was convert Treehouse of Horror VII (arbitrarily) and loaded it up.
The video playback is actually quite smooth, in fact, i couldn't detect any sort of stutter or lag, and most of the time, the audio synchs just fine (just don't pause or fast forward hehe).
Doom is freaking rad as well btw.
Jeff @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
yeah I guess it would, but video on nano, do you really want to watch something on a screen that smaller, sure you can but its not good so just go buy a video like everyone else because they are cool ;) Visit my site, woo hoo!
sciarrone orazio @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
Is it possible to transfer photo directly from the digital camera to ipod nano, without the use of the computer? How can I do it?
Thanks
dee @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
Question: can this hack and ipodlinux be done on the 60g photo ipod. I got one a few months ago before the video one came out. That kind of thing ALWAYS seems to happen to me. :-(
let me know if I can get to hack video capacity using this hack on the ipod photo.
thanks

I have a 60GB WHITE iPOD video and love it! Converting video files to .mp4 format is a cinch with IMTOO.
I also won a 30GB BLACK
iPOD video in a contest recently, so I'd like to sell it.
If anyone is interested in buying the BRAND NEW, unopened 30GB BLACK iPOD video contact me at:
ipod.9s3@gishpuppy.com
This is a serious offer and not a scam. This iPOD is not stolen and can be registered with Apple. I even can provide the receipt.
Check out my ad, and email me if interested. Serious offers only.
Disregard this ad after Dec 16th, 2005, as I will have sold it or put it up for auction on eBay.
Utills @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
Does anyone have a video of this running? How good is playback? Frame Rate? Image sharpness on the small screen?
Post further details!
dismissedasdrone @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
Excellent. Maybe they can rename the "Nano" to the "Talking Stamp".

Ryan Waddell @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
This would be so awesome... Video iPod capabilities without having to shell out the big buckolas! Although realistically, a 30gb iPod with video ain't that much more than a 4gb Nano.
Ryan Merket @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
As a nano owner I barely have enough room for my podcasts... how in the heck am I supposed to put videos on it too??
thewebguy @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
this is sick, now if they only had a 30 gig hack for the nano ;D
alecks @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
I don't know that I would really want to be watching videos on that tiny screen anyway, and 4Gb isn't very much for music + vids. Does the Nano have the video-out capabilities that the 5G does?
Klaasa @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
There's a 200GB nano hack here:-)

shadow9600 @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
Actually at that screen resolution you can likely fit quite a bit of video into 4GB, at least a few dvd's worth if not more, depending on compression. The down side of course being that currently this does not support any compression and uses a raw video format wrapped in a .avi container.
That brings me to a minor but often confused technicality; .avi is a video container or wrapper, much like .mov, not a codec in and of itself like MPEG4 or h.264 (along with hundreds of others).
Mu Doggy @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
Holy crapadory, once they add some codecs to this i'd love to add a few short vid clips to my nano. Though, I must admit, I'm lovin my 60GB ipod with video... I'd just put the funny parts of the episodes on the nano. hehee
miscblogger @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
whoa! save money and get a cooler looking ipod than the video ipod! great idea!
Bryan @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
People, please keep in mind that this requires:
1) You install Linux on your iPod
2) There's no h.264 or mpeg4 decoding on this thing, you'll have to use a crappy codec most likely, and you'll have to transcode everything (not that different from regular iPod w/ Video...except atleast it can do decent codecs)
3) There's no Video Out support in iPod Linux last I checked, so you can't watch it on a TV. Nor can you pick up any of the shows off of the iTMS (Not that most people care...)
jez @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
hi
i tried to use the program but its not working, it's proably my mistake because i am not very technical so i will appreciate it is someone can explain it to me more so i can get some vids on my nano.
David @ Dec 19th 2005 2:06AM
i really want to do this hack but im not a hacker and i dont no programming...is there a step by step instructions on how to do it.

I don't think so. I bought the digital camera connector for my nano, connected it ... and it just would not accept it: "this device is not supported ...". It just sounded to great ...

ipod nano playing video http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6974467646937874348&q=ipod+nano

I have a nano and just put iPod Linux on it. Works fine. Then I trief to put video on it, work ok, but the comppression was all screwy. I tried a different vid and it work perfectly. The only bad thing about it is that if you play it back more than once after restarting ur iPod, the A/V sync is off.
To get this working, do exactly as I say and it will work.
Instuctions for getting video onto a Nano
1. Run the iPod uttility and click restore
2. Download iPod Linux from the page http://www.theplaceforitall.com/linuxnano/
Ignore all the other files they say u need. Just download the main installer.
3. Exratc the Zip file to your desktop (no reason for this, just easyer to access)
4. Run the install WITH your Nano plugged in.
5. UNCKECK the box that says check that says Check Online Updates.
6. Run the install
7. Once it has compleated, open the other folder in the Zip called Put these in the iPod root after install.
8. Copy and paste both files in the folder to the iPod by opening the iPod with disk mode and past the files in to it (not into a folder)
9. Eject the iPod (DO NOT UNPLUG UNTELL THE SCREEN ON THE iPOD GOES TO NORMAL!!!!)
10. If the iPod did not restart, do so by holding the center button and the menu button tell it restarts. Then hold down the rewind key, it should boot up linux.
11. If it has an error, recopy the two files in the folder into the iPod root.
12. If all goes well, linnux should boot and go to a menu that looks like the iPod menue.
13. Go to http://ipodlinux.org/Video_Player and scroll down to where it says 2bbppconv with Front End, Easier Converting, all iPods. Click on the link and down load the app.
14. Launch the app, it will ask u what type of pod u have, type in nano. It will bring up a window, select a video u want to convert. It will ask u were u want to save it. Name it and click save
15. it will ask u what frame rate to save it as, type in 24 and hit enter. if done correctly, alot of text will start scrolling down the cmd prompt.
16. Copy the created video into the iPod's notes folder
17. Eject the iPod.
18. Boot Linux
19. Use the file browser to navigate into the notes folder and select the video.
20. Select the video and enjoy!

OK Can someone just break this down to me in english? I new to this ipod thing. A friend of mines told me that i can watch videos with my Nano. Is this true?? Please let me know I want to put movies on mine, so if someone knows let me know..
ReneGade @ Jan 1st 2006 1:14PM
I do not get it. This doesn't make any sense. I just got my 4GB Nano for christmas, and am trying to store video on it. I can't, not even the music videos I purchased from iTunes. You guys seem VERY experienced in all this video stuff. I am completely lost. :3
Could someone maybe help me out? Lemme know what the heck Linux is and all this other stuff I am clueless about? If you can, I would be very greatful. As I said, I'm a new iPod owner, and haven't a clue about how it works. I can do music though, there's an upside. XDDDD
ReneGade @ Jan 1st 2006 1:21PM
I didn't really understand those instructions given above. I am so confused. :/
When I plug my iPod into my computer, it brings up iTunes right away. It will not let me drag anything into it or listen to any of the songs. I need help geting video on it...and maybe eliminating this problem?
ingledorp @ Jan 4th 2006 8:59PM
crap i have pc.
is there anyway i can get vids on my nano?
