LaCie Brick: hard drive as Lego block
LaCie may be better known for its sleek n' shiny Porsche hard drives, but the company has apparently decided to go 180 with its latest drive and borrow a design from that ultimate accessory for geeks and kids alike, Lego blocks. The LaCie Brick is available in red, white and blue, in capacities from 160GB to 500GB, and prices from $120 to $400. And, yes, they stack just like real Legos, making the idea of picking up several smaller drives rather than one big device very tempting.

Sweet! I'm gonna build a robot!

Probably not a good idea to name your hard drive "Brick" ala bad firmware flash or upgrade.

Man, if they stack, I just have to get at least two! Now if the drives could be just as durable as Lego blocks, I'd buy a whole bag full.

These are great!
Mike @ Dec 19th 2005 1:37AM
It would be too sweet if they would RAID when you stacked them together!
bazald @ Dec 19th 2005 1:37AM
Do they automatically raid themselves as you stack them?
bazald @ Dec 19th 2005 1:37AM
Hrmm... that is what I get for rereading my response I guess...

Why are these not listed on Lacie's homepage? When are they available?
PeteC @ Dec 19th 2005 1:37AM
what would be nice is if you only needed one power supply to the first drive and the second drew its power from the first, not all that simple to implement but at the same time, it can't be too hard either can it? That way you could have a stack of drives all linked up with just one power cable and maybe if they put hubs in them all, only one usb cable too.

LaCie has not officially announced these yet...

RE: one power supply and multiple drives
Definitely possible, and has been done in the past (LaCie Joule).
But you burden the cost up front with the added power supply capacity that may never be used. Remember that vast majority of users have no external drive; followed by perhaps 25% with only need for one drive. The number of people who have multiple drives is quite small.
Over the years, there have been many attempts at addressing this type of need; unfortunately with little commercial success.

First one to make a Lego Star Wars diorama with these gets a cookie. :)

That's HOT! I want a RED one! Nice!
Jason Anderson @ Dec 19th 2005 1:37AM
LOL That's pretty cool.
If I were still into Legos, I'd buy it. But I'll just stick with the Porsche. They stack too.
