Users report Xbox 360 "crashing like mad"

So, the Xbox 360's been available for, what, 15 minutes, and already the crash reports are streaming in. According to postings on Xbox-Scene and other fan sites, some early adopters are discovering that waiting on line in the cold for two years to snag a box was the least of their problems: the game consoles are allegedly crashing during a variety of games and reporting a range of error messages. There's even a pic up on flickr that purports to show the 360 crashing as the Microsoft logo loads. Sure, it's too early to declare this a pandemic and start hurling Xboxes out of windows, but it still has us wondering: How's your 360 holding up?
P.S. And yes, our Xbox has crashed a bit too — though nothing too terrible.

Hey.....you all should just wait till they move the core to 0.9nm....or 0.65nm?.....whichever, that should solve most of the heat problems
I was very skeptical about going to another M.S. product. I recently switched back to Apple and my life is much better. Well....I had a friend with 2 360's and I bought one. Was having a great time playing Project Gotham 3 when I got the imfamous "Disk Problem" error. Restarted the Xbox and it will now not read any disks. 2 hours!!!! That may be the fastest Microsoft has ever screwed someone. I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING PUT OUT BY THE F'ING HACK BILL GATES AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!
that is why you wait until they come out with a new version, new firmware, ect.
I bought my XBOX360 from Best Buy, purchased the PRP (Replacement Plan with it too since the first few shipments are always known to have problems), and waited until Christmas to open it so there are more presents under the tree (I got it Thursday so I figured I'll just wait a few days).
Yesterday, I rented some games from Hollywood Video, came home, and went to sleep hoping the next day would come so I could act like a child and rip off the wrapping paper to expose my XBOX to all elements, wind, fire, water, and worst of all.... me.
When I opened my XBOX and removed it from the box and packaging, I noticed a slight rattling sound coming from inside the case but thought, "Eh, maybe it's just a cable or... uh... something."
After I hooked up my XBOX, the first thing I noticed was that the unit was louder than any other gaming console I have played and seemed to cause my entertainment center to slightly vibrate and move. Another "problem" I overlooked and decided to pursue the worlds newest gaming console.
The first game I played was Call of Duty 2, which I'll say was pretty cool. I just need to get used to the war type of games before I can say anything else about it. I played this game for about 20 mins and decided to give some of the other games I rented a chance to "sell" me.
The second game, Peter Jacksons King Kong, lasted to the second level, and then the XBOX console died on me. The TV screen said there was an "Unusable Signal" as if I never plugged anything into the ports, the sound shut off, and the XBOX would not open, turn off/shut down, or restart. After the "Unusable Signal" was displayed, the XBOX went from a constant green light surrounding the power button to a blinking red light.
When I went to manually restart the unit, the console was so hot I decided to unplug everything and moved it near a fan to help it cool down.
I believe the XBOX was hyped up too much, isn't worth the $400 I spent on it, and I'll be returning it tomorrow when the store is open.
If I were you, just like what I'm going to be doing.... wait until all the issues have been resolved, the price drops, and you get some kind of a game to play on the system before you purchase one.
The only thing that was cool is to say I had an XBOX360. But now what's cool is to say I'll be taking mine back.

well well well i told all my friends to wait to get the ps3 and they jumped on the 360 its funny and some of them tryed to take there back to the store to get there money back and its not happning they have to wait a few months to get a replacement im feeling that sony has this go around like the last one and with the ps1 i mean come on i can play my madden at home then take my sesion when im on the subway with me hows x box gonna top that any ways i just thought id laugh at all you fools that got a 360
I got my 360 for xmas and just turned it on to find it constantly crashes on the opening microsoft logo !! how gutting , not sure what the chances of getting a replacement are either ?

I was just wondering if anyone out there has experienced any kind of image burn in on there tv from this new unit. I have talked to a couple people who say it only took about 20 minutes to leave an image on there screen.
#42: YOu think Sony is the only one selling at a loss? Microsoft is selling their XBOX Gold or Premium package or whatever the good one is called at a $107 loss per unit. Or did that little tidpit of information not make it off Techdirt?
I had my 360 for about 2 weeks with no trouble but I did comment to a friend how hot it ran....when lo and behold....while playing GUN on christmas eve of all times, it crashed several times with that game and even Halo 2!! Now it won't even turn on and gives me the flashing red lights of death meaning an internal failure! I now own a $400 paper weight. SUPPOSED to be getting a replacement this week I hope! Maybe this willlast more than 5 minutes.
Just discovered crashes (completely) with TourDuty2, PerfectDark0, Quake4 and Criminal Origins. Called MS XBOX 360 support desk. They said to take ALL the games back because they are flawed. Can ya believe that???
I was considering getting xbox, but will wait a bit to see how this "heat" situation turns out. But I do have question: I only have experience with PC games, and every time a new game is released, there is a patch or software update available online shortly after. Sometimes there are new patches released every month for some time. How does that work with xbox? The game DVD is closed and can't be updated. Are patches/updates stored on xbox's hard-drive? What if I don't buy my xbox with hard-drive, how do I upgrade the game software?

Mine has crashed twice once on tigerwoods online and once on quake 4,But both times the console had been of for at least 4 hours.Hopefully microsoft will distribute an update that will solve the problem...
GOT MINE YESTERDAY!!!!! AND IT SET ON FIRE WHEN I TURNED IT ON!!!!! DONT GET 1!!!!! LUCKILY IT DIDNT SET MY HOUSE ON FIRE!!!!!
My system was freezing up so I sent it to xbox and they lost it!!! DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!!!!! I may never get a replacement box since they are blaming DHL and DHL is blaming xbox...BEWARE!!!
mine hasent crashed but im still pissed off coz i bought a game for the xbox coz it wasnt out for the 360 but it wont work i got the urgrade but still no joy anyone have any suggestionns on what i should do
I got a 360 2 days ago. I have the same problem as #216 and 353: "issue with detecting my game discs properly"
When I put a game in the 360 gives me an error message stating that "to play the disc put it in an xbox 360 console" It happened with PGR3, PDZ and Madden.
One AVS forum suggested unplugging the power supply from the console for a few minutes. That seemed to work... temporarily. Last night it happened again, sometimes. I was able to get the games to start after opening and closing the tray a few times.
Anyone else having this issue and has it resolved over time? I am debating whether I need to return the console.
Locks up when comparing game achievments. MS promotes 3 chips; Graphics, Game play, Online features. Freezes system when tring to see what games your friends are playing. Guess thats why there is a limited supply of consoles being released, because they knew it wasn't bug free. Status quo for MS to release a bug infested system!!!
Bought Kameo w/the 360 this morning. It works for 2-5 minutes and freezes....I would have said "locked-up", but the tech-support girl quickly offered "freezing". Well, new system~new lingo.
Mine has froze 4 times in a row trying to send a message from the guide during PGR3. Dare I try it agian?
I notice that most of the bitching is from people w/o a 360. I had 1 crash on launch day, and none since.
Get a new hobby other than pissing on M$, after all, some day they will own you.

I bought my X-Box 360 and was actually able to play it for about a week. I was in the middle of playing NBA Live 06 and the screen went all blue! I reset the machine and the three blinking lights signaled that my machine had crashed! I called Microsoft and was suprised to hear that they were getting lots of calls and having many people send their X-Box 360's back to Microsoft. I figured I better read up a little more now and see if I was the only one! I guess not!

i got an 360 right when it came out didnt have to go and wait outside because preordered and paid in full but a lot of the problems is one i had which is u cant get halo 2 or any other regular xbox games online unless you go to system then go to family settings then go to xbox live control then put in ur password for email then go to online gameplay select original xbox online games and switch to allowed, i know this because i called the hotline and asked the lady who walked me throught step by step the # is 1 800 469-9269 also if u heard about them moverheating and sparking and or melting games its a lie u can activate an auto shutoff after 6 hours of no use to prevent overheating and they were myths so people wouldnt buy the counsol also if u r on xbox live send me a msg ill play send a friend request to teh big meat or Xx Shin3d0wn Xx (the 0 in shin3d0wn is a zero) if any if u want send me an email at meat_armstrong@yahoo.com

Mine locked up once in the 300 or so hours I have played it, I still love it... and they provide updates on Live from time to time.

I'm wating for PS3. I don't care and probably ever will about Microsoft and their "money", but to me it seems like the PS3 is going to be the best nextgen console (barring some catastrophic problem).
Just my 2 cents. I've had NFS Underground crash or "freeze" on me several times and I was able to repeat it which leads me to believe that it was not due to overheating. The game would freeze just after a police pursuit was initiated. I was on the Blacklist 14 races. Otherwise as long as a pursuit wasn't initiated the game would run fine. Curious if anyone else has had this freezing problem with this game specifically.
After many calls to Microsoft's Xbox tech-support, I sadly had to return my 360 to where I waited countless hrs. to get a full refund...
The support from MS was so slow...They promissed to overnight an empty box to ship them my xbox360 and till now I have not recieved this (EMPTY BOX)...
