Retraction issued on PlayStation 3 price / date
Sorry to get your hopes up, PlayStation peeps, just to dash them like so, but that article a couple days ago where
CNN Money quoted Stringer tagging a price and relative
release date to the PS3? Well, they retracted the statements and their attribution to Stringer — where did the quote
come from, you ask? GI attributes it to an "anonymous source within Sony," which doesn't lend the, um, exact same kind
of credence as Sir Howard. so until further notice, the
PlayStation 3 still has no known expected
price or price range, as well as no estimated window for release for the US version of the console after the Japanese
system launches next Spring. Still, it was nice while it lasted.
[Thanks, Eliot, via
GamesIndustry.biz]

How much time was there between the Japanese and the US release of the PS2 and PSP?
snap! i thought maybe someone would let me go home with some money in my pockets but it looks like PS3 is still going to cost me 5 million dollars o well. its all about gaming right?
sony will not price the ps3 over 450$ usd, it would be total suicide! they need to at least in some way compete with the pricing of the 360.
This blows! So our optioins are 1) keep playing the old a$$ systems on the market, or 2) buy an over priced system-crashing fire hazard (X-box 360) or 3) wait 5 years for the PS3...
I have no doubts that that fake news was leaked from sony to hit the 360 sales. This way they can create the usual bullshit hype, and not have to back it up. The console will cost around 500-600.
do you smell- v a p o r w a r e ? ? ?
Most likely the PS3 will not see introduction into the US market until just before Christmas 2006. If the Japan launch date goes beyond Spring, then you're looking at a 2007 US launch date.
And the price is going to be more than the 360, unless Sony wants to assume massive debt, which I'm not sure they'd be willing to do in their current state.
Figures... sony hasn't been pricing in other areas very well at all. I was looking forward towards there W900i cellphone, but the thing costs around $950. Rip off. So I'm going to get the Nokia N70 or 80 when it comes out for less. Hopefully they get their pricing togther for this thing(one would think so with so much riding on it). Honestly though 600 dollars is reasonable if Blu-ray does take off as the next big median for movies. If HD-DVD takes its' place than I'm just going to install a HD-DVD player in my soon to be owned (hopefully) 360. Why is everyone whining so much about price. R & D is getting more and more expensive as these thing get more complicated. It is bound to go up. To ease the pain a bit they let them do other things like dvd's and such so I think it is an equal trade off. If 600 got you by for five years on a pc everyone would have a kick ass rig:)
it would be a very bad move for sony to price the ps3 above 400$...
SInce its being introduced later anyway, the price of the bray drive may have droped, as well as the overall manufacturing costs to some extent. Nevertheless, sony would take a large loss.
Probably they might offer an utterly useless "core" system at$400, like Ms did. I find it rather funny that with the absence of any way to store savegames on the x360 core, the actual minimum price for a usable system is around 330$...the 299$ price being bullshit in every way.
I keep telling people that Sony, They cannot release a half-way decent system in a year after not even having a display model at E3. Looking at the Xbox's issues with Cooling, Id say that the PS3 is looking at either a Christmas 2006 or Spring of 2007. Another compounding feature is the apparent complication of the CELL processor in Coding, which would push the release date back even more.
you people are f'ing fools and fanboys...
The news (while probably truthful) was obviously retracted as to not overshadow psp and ps2 holiday sales. Remember, Sony is walking a fine line here...trying to maintain subtle hype for PS3, cutting XBOX360 sales in the process, and retaining high sales for the PSP and PS2 during the Holiday season. CNN front news is blowing their hype out of proportion...not retracting the comments from the Hollywood Reporter interview, however, lends credence to the news's plausibility.
Sony does not want to go the path of MS by overhyping their next-gen machine, and in the process, killing their best-selling current product-lines.
Wow o rly, your fanboy is showing...
I personally think that when it comes out it will definitely be competitively priced. Probably no less than $475.
Sony has to realize that regardless of how good their system might be and how powerful that they need to price it so that people can actually afford to get it. While they may suffer a loss by doing so, if they get ahead in the race they can definitely fix that.
You people calling everyone sony fanboys doesn't mean anything except that you are a ms fanboy.
The point of a NEXT-GEN conole is to do something that we previously cant do in gaming. Every partin the xbox360 our pc's can already do. and pathetically im going to get a laptop that is more powerful than an xbox360, (it has a Gforce go 7800 GTX). Nintendo has a new type of controller that is unique and sony has blue-ray and cell processors and the RSX gpu which was said to be better than the 7800GTX BY invidia.
He's the point. you can get a pc from cyberpowersystems that costs relatively the same as an xbox360 and it will be almost the same graphically and be able to do much more. And more games come out for the pc than ANY console.
Both the REV and the PS3 have things that are NEXT-GEN(new) but the xbox360 is already being beaten by home pc's The desktop version of the cell processor wont be out until 2007, it is said to have NINe cores and a max clockable speed of 8GHz. That is something we dont have yet.
The cost to build the system was estimated to be around $365 per unit, leaving a $35 profit on every untit sold if at $400.
but we all know nomatter wat the outcome, u'll still buy the ps3 even if $800
I can assure evryone that the PS3 will becoming to the U.S. in during the months of May to June, and that the price will be under 500 bucks.
Until l then people can go out and either buy a the biggest waste of money (Xbox 360) or they can wait for the PS3 and be happy with the great games that are coming out for the PS2.
In my mind there are two possibilities. If the 360 completely bombs in Japan over the next 6 months Japan "could" (Note: COULD) be second to an American release. If the 360 does OK or even well doubtless Sony is going to defend their home turf first before closing in on the US. Beyond that is simple component shortages. If cell chips, blu-ray drives are in short supply the release date will be up in the air.
Personally I think anyone picking up a first gen PS3 is an even bigger fool then those who jumped on the 360 bandwagon. Why? Simple: blu-ray They are going to be putting a brand new technology and drive that won't be even 6-8 months old. Along with a new CPU design and a whole new revamped system design. Each one of those points screams WAIT! for those who want Sony's next gen offering. Personally I'm going to wait a good solid 3 months until I jump on a PS3. . . Actually I'm going to wait until all 3 systems are out before making a decision. . . Until then I'm going to pick up a $99 Gamecube bundle pack tomorrow. How can you beat a $99 console?
You can? We have your personnal assurance? I feel better now.
I wish there was something that whooped the ass of fools who think they are clever and use gay-ass terminology and phrases that they've stolen from GAF and other videogame-related forums. Internet terminology if f'ing stupid. You must be a tool with no friends if something compels you to forebode the english language and settle for stupid shit a 10 year old would sputter.
"O Rly", the whole owl thing, QFT, STFU, LOLz!!!, "I see what you did there", etc. is unacceptable, and I will come over the house of each person who uses it from now on and personally brand your forehead with a Giant "T" for tool and then beat the living shit out of you.
That being said, it's annoying as shit. Please stop.
The reason that the PS3 is going to come out late 2006/ early 2007 is because of the complication of the cell processor to develop games for it (Many developers have said so, but I don't have the time ti cite them individually). When Sony and the Sony fanboys exclaim "It's so that they can develop better games than the 360!!" it's just a load of crap and hype. The PS3's games will be no more advanced than those of the Xbox 360 so really all waiting for the PS3 is, is waiting for Playstations lineup of exclusive franchises such as Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid (Exclusive for awhile after launch atleast).
In conclusion, the next person who calls the Xbox 360 a piece of crap, or a waste of time, I will ring my Fanboy bell for all to hear (I own all current gen systems and I plan to get all next gen systems, so no, I am not a Microsoft fanboy)
Pheh, I HAVE AN 8-BIT NES! EAT 17-YEAR-OLD TECHNOLOGY, SUCKERS!! Because my system has better games than yours will ever have. >:) At least, it had more UNIQUE games. And NOTHING will ever compare to the ol' "bloop, bloop" of the NES's music!
Frankly, I'm just waiting 'till I have enough to buy myself a Super NES. Then I will be happy. I don't need the nearly-lifelike graphics that your systems have, just to have a good time playing video games. I don't need your wussy first-person shooter games, where about the only point to play it is to kill until there's nobody left. I don't need an over-abundance of profanity and violence and blood and gore to make my game playing experience more enjoyable. I say, MAY SONY NEVER RELEASE THE PS3 IN THE U.S.A. ! ! ! HAHAHAHAHA!!
at least, may they never release it until I have a million dollars

these comments are hilarious. love it when 13 year old nerds get into arguements about sh1t they don't know about because they read it somewhere else on the internet.
keep it up kids, hehehehe :)
Come on, everyone just get along.
We should be basking in the glory of the amazing Sony's greatest new product.
Here are some helpful hints for when you do get your PS3,
1. Put tape on each game disk before inserting
2. Hold shift (square) while you insert the game
3. Run from the men in black coats.
Happy gaming!
You guys are funny. If its less than 400 bones I'll get one. Otherwise I'll go outside and play during the warm may and june months. Maybe my 360 will have a chip by then so I can play Sonic. :)
In reply to "double you tea eff"
Not all 13 children here are as stupid as most of these fan boys.(Im 14, and i DO know what im talking about)
The PS3 isent going to sell very well at all.
1. Over price tag
2.Sony's never got moeny form selling the accutall console(Nintendo is the only one)
3. PS3 is going to losse a lot of 3rd party surport, which is one of its stronger points to being a good system
4.PS3 launch is going to be rushed and ahve some faults(like Xbox 360s)
These are my views of how the PS3 is slowly going to Plauge the Sony company financially.
Oh and i thoguth they were saying they broguht the relise date fowrd 2 weeks, not back a year or two(or am i in the wrong time frame)
Thanks for reading, have fun posting
If someone says "O RLY" again, i'm gonna scream.
I'm really surprised Sony didn't try to steal the 360's thunder with some price point and release date announcement this week. Making some guy who writes for CNN-Money retract a favorable statement doesn't bode well. Perhaps they have no f'ing clue when their vaporware will be ready to be mass fabbed. Or, maybe Sony doesn't want to launch with only a fireworks game again. I think Ken's asperations for the PS3 are hitting reality and Sony has to decide how to cut costs. If the 360 costs $525 to build, the PS3 with it's current spec sheet (eg. dual HDMI at 1080p even though its highly doubtful the machine is powerful enough to do that) must be astronomical for a console. How do you break the news that your console will be hacked down to the "Xbox 1.5 level", you won't hit your Spring 2006 release date, and you have no online service? The clock is ticking on Sony now that the 360 is out.
I believe Sony did wait 3 months after the Dreamcast released before hyping/lieing up the Emotion Engine and the PS2. So, they'll probably announce in February all of the potential greatness of the PS3. Dreamcast sold 1.8 million units in that time, but Microsoft is expecting to sell 3 million units. Definitely not too much for Sony to overcome, but people will be far more skeptical of what Sony says this time around after being somewhat "burned" by the PS2 announcments.
Joystiq refuses to publish this correction for some reason.
That site is crap anyway, they just want the PS fanboys to flood their comments so they get money from the sponsors.
The price of the Ps3 is......
