Cube World Game Cubes interactive stick figures
Even on a slow day, we probably wouldn't bring you anymore of those played-out
Tamagotchi-style pixilated games, but
the Cube World Game Cubes by Radica intrigued us because of their ability to communicate with one another a la
Nintendogs. Little more than an animated stick
figure inside a plastic cube, the four Game Cube characters (Slim, Dodger, Scoop, and Whip) each has his own accessory
(stick, ball, rope, dog) that he plays with either spontaneously or when one of the three buttons is pressed. The cubes
have built-in gyroscopes, so shaking and dropping the toy affects the little man inside, who can end up bouncing around
the screen and getting pretty banged up if you're feeling sadistic. Since this whole affair would get boring after
about five minutes, the real draw here is connecting multiple cubes together and watching the characters "visit" each
others' "apartments" to play, hug, or fight. Despite the multiplayer fun, we still predict that your $32 buys you
approximately one week of entertainment, less if you're over the age of seven.

looks like a take off on Ryota Kuwakubo's Bitman.

More features, but ultimately, less cool.

Mom, I said I wanted a Gamecube, not a Game Cube!
(OK, that could never happen, nobody really wants a Gamecube.)

"OK, that could never happen, nobody really wants a Gamecube"
If they want to appear "cool" then they don't - if they want to just enjoy some of the best games this gen (RE4 in all it's glory to name but one) then they do. It is so cheap now that there is no reason not to pick one up just to play the exclusives alone. ;)
Lenny @ Dec 19th 2005 2:38AM
I played around with these at a local Brookstone...they're actually pretty cool. You can attach them and one guy would climb from the top cube down to the bottom, and then you can disconnect them and he won't be able to get back up. Seems like a great timewaster.
I'd definitely buy them if they were like $15.
Victor Dorph @ Dec 19th 2005 2:38AM
Pretty cute... But ya a 14 min, of fame item.
Ravnos @ Dec 19th 2005 2:38AM
@Lenny: At $15 they would be a great buy. I'd pick up two and keep them in my cubicle at work for when I get really bored. They're almost the perfect cubicle goodie. At $32, they seem to be a bit expensive.
@Christopher7xii: Funny, that's the same kind of bullshit I hear from people who don't own a GC. Everyone I know who does prefer it to the other consoles available and it's the PS2 or XBox that winds up gathering dust.
Dave @ Dec 19th 2005 2:38AM
They're sold in packs of two, so individually, they are $15 each (at amazon).

"It has nothing to do with cool factor. I've never heard of anyone being ashamed to own a cube or hide it. Most people just realize it has about 5 good games for it, there's no such thing as online play, the controller is funked, and it can't decide on a memory card size."
@Christopher7xii:
that is wrong sorry. I am an "Older gamer" and many "Older gamer" friends of mine own multi systems or own a gamecube, yes none of the are ashamed because we are old and don't care what kids in game forums say (for example).. the younger players, who call nintendo "Kiddy" are ironically the ones who generally avoid the cube because it appears to not be as "cool" as a Playstation - I can see why it doesn't appear as "cool" but personally that doesn't come into it. There are good games on all 3 consoles and to say the cube only has 5 is obviously wrong. It has as many quality first party titles than the other systems AND the best version of Resi Evil in it's generation. The shiggsy exclusives are worth the very cheap price and btw Price doesn't equate to fun or quality - the DS is far cheaper than PSP but many who own both are mainly playing DS at this moment.
So yes it does have a lot to do with what is "cool" but also of course peoples tastes in games. I love Gran Turismo and would buy a sony sytem for that game IF they make it compelling enough in future.
Peter Hirschberg @ Dec 19th 2005 2:38AM
Just because the Gamecube isn't your speed doesn't mean it's not appreciated by others. It's actually a decent little console.
Here's a list of more than "5 good games" that are exclusive to the GC:

That list of exclusives is great - I'm a big fan of most of them. I personally own all of the current gen consoles and I'd have to say we've had more fun playing the Gamecube than anything else. Especially as far as 4-player party games go - great times. That said - it pretty much had my favorite game in just about every other genre as well (although I generally don't play sports or racing games).

MR GAME AND WATCH RETURNS!
furtim @ Dec 19th 2005 2:38AM
I wish I had a GameCube, but as a starving almost-out-of-college student I'm too poor for even that. ;)
However, as for the little stick figure guys, does this Game Cube business remind anyone else of the plot to Darwinia? What would happen if we stuck a huge number of these together? Would it become self-aware like SkyNet and destroy us all?
Shin @ Dec 19th 2005 2:38AM
(Nice to see some intelligent (read: mature) people to comment on the Nintendo matter, so I don't have to do it)
$32? Man, if they price this right it could be the next tamagotchi!
E71 @ Dec 19th 2005 2:38AM
It is a bit pricey. It's either a marketing error or these are feature-packed. Personally, I hope it's the latter. Wish I could afford to blow money on at least 8 of them. Sweeeet.
Hunty @ Dec 19th 2005 2:38AM
If they were programmable, you could make a really cool version of One-Piece Mansion out of them. Too bad they're not.
mike @ Dec 19th 2005 2:38AM
@E71 (and everyone else)
i just spent $70 on all four of them at the Discovery Channel store, because i'm a sucker for electronic games. the front of the box says SERIES 1, which can only mean more characters are gonna be spawned. i haven't opened them yet (still hooked on electronic sudoku).
oh, and Gamecube is the BEST current-gen console. Xbox and Playstation spend too much time on graphics and not enough on fun factor. bright colors and cutesy characters are only the skin. besides, every game these days for PS2/Xbox is a crappy sports game or a GTA ripoff. i own all 3 consoles, and guess which two are collecting dust? ;)

So, you could like, attached your cube to your buddy's cube, wait until his guy climbed into your cube, then disconnect his cube and run off with his stickman?! :o
BTW, Gamecube rocks. Its cheap, and has tons of good games. Paper Mario honestly is the most fun I've had playing a game in quite awhile.
