PSP tips and tricks
Hot damn, last week's Treo 650 Tips and Tricks was a
huge success (116 comments and counting), so for this week's installment we figured we'd hit up another gadget
celebrating its first birthday, the PlayStation Portable, which launched in Japan just about a year ago. Have at
it!
P.S. - While we're on the subject, you should take a peek at PSP Fanboy,
ok?

cool
Do not upgrade to 1.51 or higher because you cant run homebrew
PSP radio for those who have 1.5 firmware. of course you have the nes, snes, sega, and many other emulators for those who like homebrew. PSP remote is pretty cool if you have a ps2.
tip #1 roll back your firmware
tip #2 d/l roms and iso
tip #3 google how to get them running
tip #4 never pay for anything software related ever again
Use an Steno Apacer external drive to swap files on your memory sticks if you don't want to carry a laptop. Is the next bext this to a PSP with an internal HD.

Get out of those and you can connect your PSP to your booming home stereo system and blast your RSS Feeds!!
Nothing like a less then $10 mod! :)
Dennis
Visit http://net4psp.com and feed your need for feeds...
Take a sludgehammer rented from Home Improvement or other resource.
Place PSP sqaure on a hard surface.
Lift hammer over head until dangerously uncontrollable.
Swing down hammer aiming for LCD screen.
Repeat.
The Treo post worked well because there are no (or fewer) people who hate the Treo as much as some people hate the PSP/Sony. Still, hopefully this thread gives some good tips and or tricks.
The only 'Tip' I can think of right now is to recommend the greatest game I've played in years, available only on the PSP:
Lumines
It's a Tetris killer, definitely. It's infinitely replayable, highly addictive and the soundtrack is amazing. If Lumines was the only PSP game ever released, it would still be worth the $250 for the system ;)
Also, keep your eyes open for the upcoming PSP versions of Worms and Katamari!
Engadget should make a psp compatible Podcast, it has to buffer every 5 seconds on psp. Also some one should make a news feed by just making the names of songs news.
Check out PSPboards.jconserv.net its a cool psp board
Not a free tip but I've really enjoyed using my PSP to control my iTunes (on Mac) library via CoverBuddy. Almost free at $20.00.
You can put your photos in folders in the /PSP/PHOTO folder on your memory stick for album - like behavior.
I had the steno and used it for the psp and it worked great for carrying along movies and stuff, but one day I was thinking, 'well now I carry around my psp, Steno, Card reader, and ipod. There's got to be a way to cut down on the things I've got to carry...' and there is:
I trashed(sold) my 15Gb 3g ipod and got a 60Gb iaudio x5(better sound, more space, FM radio, podcast on the go, usb-on-the-go, then called up apacer support and ordered the 19-in-1 card reader ($20) and the 5" mini usb cable ($5)which fits perfectly into the psp. These work great with the X5 and gives you the ability to transfer files directly to and from your psp using the Host feature on the X5, as well as from 19 different types of flash cards(from the 19in1! Plus you've got plenty-o space for music and movies all on one device. Also, the X5 is one 60Gb drive, whereas the steno shows up as two drives(partitions) which is kinda a pain. [i shld get paid 4 this]
Now I'm waiting for some genius to come up with a way of being able to play h.264 movies from the mem stick. And of course some bigger(5gigger) memory sticks(less transfering).
Woot!
Jebuz. how about a little less flaming and a little more "shut the hell up"?
"Must be stuck playing the Game Boy Color."
Metal Gear: Ghost Babel > Metal Gear Ac!d
The GBC is awesome. Don't dis on it.
And why would someone who couldn't afford a PSP want to smash one with a hammer? Wouldn't that be something that a rich person would do because they can spare it?
But anyway, I'll be getting a PSP for Christmas (I hope) so tips and tricks would be nice. ^-^
PSP has hacks.
DS has games.
http://nintendo.about.com/library/dswins/bldspsp1.htm
Different strengths.
Unless you want to talk about homebrew, management/sync software, or accessories I dont see much point in this discussion. Unlike the Treo, the PSP OS is pretty straight forward and there isn't much beyond what's covered in the manual.
Yargh! I have to wait till after christmas to get my psp. For some dumb ass reason, my parents wont let me buy anything from about a week after thanksgiving until after christmas. And, to all the DS flamers, i've got one too, so shut the hell up. If you've actually ever played any of the good games, you wouldnt flame so much.
PSPware will take avis right off your camera, convert them and put them on your PSP. It will do the same with videos dragged in from itunes. As well as movies created in iMovie. Thats pretty cool no? and NOT IN THE MANUAL jerkass.
My tip would be to bite the bullet and install SonicStage. The reason is that Atrac3Plus really is a great codec, and at 64kbps, it compares easily, if not favorably, to 128kbps MP3. This means you can easily double the amount of albums you can fit on your Memory Stick. I have 15 full albums on my 512MB card, and there's still plenty of room for saves, WipEout Pure downloads, and a few images.
Oh, and buy WipEout Pure. It's easily the best game on the system.
"For some dumb ass reason, my parents wont let me buy anything from about a week after thanksgiving until after christmas."
Everyone says i'm so hard to shop for cause I always buy what I want, how do you have the self control to stop buying things for such a long period of time?
Geez, can there not be a flame war every time there's a discussion on either the PSP or DS? I use a DS but I don't go around messing up PSP discussions.
To answer the question, PSP homebrew software is being developed faster than DS homebrew software, so if homebrew software is what you want, get a PSP.
I've got Lumines. And Wipeout Pure. Neither do much of anything for me. I don't care for sports games. Racing games aren't interesting. I don't like Strategy games. No interest in hack-n-slash or fighting games. Card-based games are painful. And the analog pointer sucks.
Movies are good, but damn bloody expensive. And not playable on anything else. And very limited available.
I want RPGs (with multiple characters controllable by a single player) and MMORPGs, preferably both first and third person, with good writing, good storyline. I want to be able to pick and choose the people I play with, and not even know that anyone else exists.
We've seen how SOE has screwed up in the past, and how they're likely to continue screwing things up. Are there ever going to be any really good games released for PSP?
I've probably spent over $1000 by now, searching for the one thing that will supposedly make my initial investment worthwhile. I haven't found anything yet.
Just because no one's said it so far...
Install 'PSP video 9'. That's one great bit of free software. In fact, download it instead of buying Sony's software and donate $5 to the guys that make it. A saving of $15.
I'm running 1.5 and have downloaded the emulators needed to play homebrews... can someone tell me where i can find a link for original supermario for my psp?
Thanks
For the love of god, even if you can't afford a game afterwards, UPGRADE THE CARD PAST THE 32! >_>
Btw, I own both a DS and a PSP, neithers kiddy, neithers better, they both compliment eachother pretty nicely, one has unique games, the other with tons of multimedia and some great graphics. So shut up about whether ones better then the other.
how do you get emulators on your psp?
A nintendo DS tips and tricks would be nice too.
Damn people stop with the flaming and burning or you'll all go to hell. This is suppose to be about PSP tip and tricks, not PSP ass and wipes.
The Treo plays movies off the memory card at the same resolution as the PSP. The Treo also has a web browser and RSS news reader. You can use it to view photos and listen to MP3s. Why would I want a PSP?
Games?
DS has better games.
Treo is a better gadget.
PSP has no place in my gadget bag.
There is a bunch of homebrew software that is becoming more available since the release of the wifi from nintendo. The DS is a great system and so is the PSP. There are arguments on both that cancel each other out because each has unique qualities. But the PSP does have an advantage with the 2.6 upgrade, which allows wma files to be loaded onto the PSP. My advice, get the 2.6 upgrade and the door is wide open for oppotunities of hacking on the PSP.
Nothing like portable snes with hundreds of games.
on a 2.0 none the less :D
well i dont see why you would upgrade. again back to the homebrew you can have literally 100's of games on your psp. plus it works as pretty much anything. soon i expect there to be a hack that lets my psp cook for me. ive been dying for a ds but all my money goes into my computer. the only real tip i have for the psp is to get the datel hdd. i think its 4 gbs of hdd space and obviously it will hold plenty of music especially if in atrac format and you can put all your ripped and downloaded/converted movies on their with the best quality settings. the hdd isnt even all that bulky but it does cost as much as the system itself. but just think 1 gb for music, 1gb for a movie or 2, .5 gb for game saves and 1.5 gb for all your emulators and roms!! thats like 300 games!!!! so yeh definitely dont upgrade.
"PSP tips and tricks"
Cool so how do I make the PSP have more "good" games?
Check out PSPWare at http://www.nullriver.com/pspware
hey #36, scoot241, i'd be interested in buying, send me an e-mail: legatedm@gmail.com
My psp is my new iPod, since my iPod stopped working. Its been very good to me, esp. with the new RSS trick... sweet and simple. And Lumines is the shit. haven't had a chance to try many games but Movies Music and Pics... AND wireless internet. good enough. haven't really tried a lot of hacks. but i don't feel like i need too. so if you like personal media, psp is for you.
1. Spend $250 on a PSP
2. Hack it until it plays all your old NES and SNES games.
3. Get sick of playing these games on your PSP and go back to playing your old NES and SNES.
Don't Upgrade
Don't bother with new games, they reqire an upgrade.
PSP Video 9 is fantastic
I've got the PSP and the DS, the DS gets used a lot more
Correction! You can use the 2.0 firmware to run about 80% of the homebrew out there now with Fanjita's loader. 0.85 is the latest version and it lets you run the newest SNES emus and ScummVM for that matter =) No longer do you need to stick to 1.5 (unless you are pirating, bad bad!)
get PVNC, lets u use the psp as a VNC client. So u get a virtualy desktop on your psp, I have actually some what succesfully controlled a game of warcraft 3 with my psp (screen doesn't refresh fast enuf but it was still cool). Pair that with those USB darts and u have remote controlled missile launchers.
once again, how about a tips and tricks article for the Audiovox SMT5600, huh? I'm not feelin' the love, here.
Hook it up to an iAudio X5/M5 and you now have a PSP with a 20-30gb portable drive to store all those "homebrews" and movies on...
Go one step further and get the X5L to get the best battery life on earth combined with a bigger sized battery for the psp and you will have a portable media center that will last longer than any portable computer out there...
Works great!!!
Use PDF2PSP to tranfers your morning newspaper automatically to the PSP and read the news during the commute to work or school.
http://pdf2psp.sourceforge.net/
How well do SNES emulators run on the PSP? Smoothly? Or still with some problems?
I have both the PSP and the DS. Can't be bothered with homebrew (cos frankly most of it's piracy, with a few nice extras like radio). There are lots of good games for the PSP including hot shots golf, legend of heroes, popolocrois, gta, lumines etc. There are also lots of good games for the DS including mario kart, castlevania, sonic, meteos etc. Get off your fanboy wagons!
As for tips and tricks, I have to agree with other posters. Unless it's about homebrew there are not that many...
For one, I am posting this comment from my PSP. I just got done with a round of SOCOM, online (via wifi). 2.0 works great btw! I will also be transfering video content from my TIVO, for an upcoming business trip, later this morning. This is that cool! I have been boycotting all things Sony, until I saw this. Just could't resist...
right...my turn
i have a psp, a ds, and a gizmondo, and to be frank:
the ds is just boring - whoopsey doo i can touch it and it does something - the touchscreen on my smartphone is SO much more useful
the gizmondo is good but is just way underpowered and doesnt live up to whats written on the box and gprs is so god damned expensive
the psp is another story - i dont get bored with it because i have a good selection of games (NFS Most Wanted, Mercury, Wipeout Pure, And MGA), and when i do get bored of games i can swap over to either of my 2 gig memory cards to watch some videos or listen to some music - and, when i get bored of that, i can listen to some podcasts, then whem im bored with that i can check my email, then by the time ive finished replying to all my email i reallise ive got homework to do
overall the psp is most definately the best investment - well worth my £650 - gizmondo is just a waste of time - and ds, well, ds, thats for the kids
cant wait till i can get my hands on a copy of BttleField 2 PSP
my top tip for PSP is to get yourself a copy of SonicStage 3.2 - fantastic music organisation and the sound output is great - i used to run in 192kbps mp3, now all my music is 160kbps Atrac3Plus and everything sounds better, especially on my 5.1 system :P
also, dont use psp video 9 (or whatever version theyre on) - its the most annoying program ive ever seen - it decided that its gonna start itself every time i start my computer up and wont go away, meaning my computer startup time has increased by nearly a minute because it always fails - just get DVD Decrypter and one of the very good MP4 encoders that are freely available out there
im done now
#46, you have WAY too much money on your hands
Stream your MP3s from your PC at home to anywhere in the world via your PSP... cool. http://www.gamespot.com/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=24030005
I love the PSP. The on-line Socom game is just amazing. I couldn't be happier. When GT comes out on PSP, then it will be the must have unit is has always been. Also, Sony has finally realized that they cam tap some many markets with is PSP. I suspect you will see major extensions to the PSP in the coming months. Has anyone tries using SKYP on their PSP?
