RAZR V3c debuts on Verizon
We knew it was due any day now what with that V3c dummy page up on their site, but today Verizon officially announced the RAZR V3c (aka the CDMA RAZR). As expected, it features EV-DO, a 1.3 megapixel camera, and Bluetooth (though no OBEX, as usual) and you can expect to shell out $199.99 after $100 rebate with two-year contract to get one of these suckers come December 12th — ahh, to give to another, or to buy for oneself? Happy holiday decision making!

Still no sign of the expansion slot the Verizon rep "promised" me would be on the phone. Pfft...
Lectoid @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
Hey hey, take off another 100 dollars for the "New every two" deal, a $99 Razr isn't bad at all.
xbit @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
How thick is it? The picture above makes it look a lot thicker than the GSM version...
Jeff @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
Any news about the "RAZR Berry" phone from Cingular, Verizon or others?
symm @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
The color combos refer to the Oakley RAZRWIRE bluetooth glasses/headset, not the phone.
Christian @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
As a current Verizon customer, I'm happy to get the RAZR, but considering that I'm out of my contract,I'm thinking the V3i (Cingular's new RAZR), still beats the V3c. Hey, transflash (Music/Video), non crippled bluetooth, and a customizable interface (Motorola with hacks of course) combined with 7 o'clock start times is a pretty compelling argument. If It weren't for Verizon's incredible network, there would be no contemplating. Even the look of the V3i beats the crap out of the V3c(subjective of course). Darn you Verizon, why are you phones always one step behind.
Dan @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
"With an embedded Motorola Bluetooth wireless headset into Oakley sunglasses, RAZRWIRE Bluetooth Eyewear lets active and style-conscious consumers experience hands-free, cable-free communications. RAZRWIRE will initially be available in three frame and lens color combinations, including Platinum/Gold Iridium, Pewter/Black Iridium and Mercury/Gray."
the phone doesn't seem to come in different colors.... I think you misread this passage.
Geoff S @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
I don't know how closley the Engadget Writers/editors (what ever) read the comments on these, but actually the rumors on howard forums say that obex works on this one. There are some verizon employees on there and at least one of them already has one, and obex works.

This is where it is first mentioned. It's in a couple threads.
Richard Driskill @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
Pick the Cingular V3 (GSM) over the Verizon V3 (CDMA), as the GSM phone can be used pretty much worldwide (it's a "world standard"); not so with CDMA.
Steven @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
Unfortunately, it's not a tri-mode phone, and doesn't support analog bands. I travel frequently around the U.S. and still find places where my LG4400 drops into analog mode. If a phone doesn't work everywhere I go, it's not much good to me regardless of how many bells and whistles it has. I like those extra features, but my primary reason for owning a cell phone is, believe it or not, to make and receive phone calls.
jfox @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
anyone have a direct link to the phone on the verizon web site? I cant find the phone there - despite the article claiming its on there.

ENGADGET: THE COLOR OPTIONS REFER TO THE RAZRWIRE SUNGLASSES ONLY.
THE V3c RAZR WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE IN ONE COLOR : CHARCOAL GRAY.

I wish VZW allowed multiple phones on one line...I would love to use my Treo650 during the day and this Razr when I go out at night.
duh @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
looks like bluetooth is not crippled on the verizon razr. at least, not as bad as the other phones.
http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=787595
OBEX working, just not phone-to-phone OPP. you can transfer files from computer to phone and phone to computer via bluetooth.
shibs @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
I wonder if the CDMA razr will let you surf the web on a palm handheld via bluetooth like the GSM razr will.
Raghav @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
does anybody know whether I can use a data cable with the Verizon Razr to transfer mp3s to make as my ringtone? My brother has a Cingular Razr that has this capability, I'm wondering whether Verizon is going to cripple this feature. Thanks!
Don Wilson @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
So will this be able to sync with a Mac Mini?
kdoub1e @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
I modified the iSync 2.1.1 metaclasses.plist file to include RAZR V3c support which allows me to sync contacts & calendars via BT. This will work for us Mac users until Apple releases an update for iSync.

Isn't Verizon putting their crappy OS on the phone?
L'Emmerdeur @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
shibs,
As do I, my friend, as do I.
V3C + Bluespoon + iPaq HX4700 VGA ftw.
Craig @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
'Isn't Verizon putting their crappy OS on the phone?'
It's better than Motorola's crappy OS.
Jim @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
Yeah, it's the crappy Verizon OS (which i believe is the crappy LG OS)... It's hideous. Even most of the annoying motorola haters think it's a step backwards.
duh @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
can i use this with my palm for email?
Craig @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
My friend has a Moto e815. If she gets a text message while the alarm is set, the alarm won't go off. So if she goes to bed at 1:00am, gets a text message at 2:00am, it won't wake her at 7:00am. This isn't even apparently a bug, but rather how the app was programmed. Really great OS...

try looking in the "Motorola Razr V3c Launch/Info/Reviews.........." thread, its kind of long other wise I would have found exactly where in there it says. Although I am sure it's in there some where. You need some program, its a 3 letter acronym starting with m not sure what the exact name is.

ohhhHHHHHhHHHHhhhhhhHHHhhhhh a 1.3 mp cam! Too bad imports are up to 2.1 MP, Japan past 3MP and south korea is hitting 8.
The US is so lame for phones.

The E815 doesn't use Verizon's standard OS, it uses Motorola's. The RAZR has Verizon's.
RazrV3i Wanter @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
Does anyone know when the v3i is coming out for cingular? I can find any news of it anywhere.
Thanks

this phone is availeble in VIVO here in brazil for like 2 months now

great to see that verizon is now getting what alltel has had for close to two weeks. oh wait. they're not. my alltel v3c isnt crippled... haha

I know that. I was making fun of Motorola's crappy OS. See also my previous post (#24).
delerious @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
It says in the specs that it allows AAC's to be played.....I wonder if protected AAC's are allowed too.
Oscar @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
Interestingly enough, the Verizon page on the V3C states that the phone does not support OBEX. Click on the Bluetooth icon then wait til all of the animations complete. It's in the fine print.
"the v3c supports bluetooth profiles for wireless headsets, hands-free accessories. It does not support object exchange (obex) profiles including file/object transfer of ringtones, games, picture and video messaging."
Rusty @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
Just bugs the crap out of me that cell companies
"cripple" the OBEX transfer stuff just to force
people to download/upload files to their service.
Another reason why I pay extra for unlocked phones.
delerious @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
This only makes me happier that my birthday is 3 days after x-mas.
Oscar @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
#37: You are probably reading the specs for the V3i, which has iTunes. The V3c just has an MP3 player as far as Motorola's own info page shows. The V3i has iTunes, so it can play Fairplay-protected AAC files (from the iTunes music store).
beanspants1 @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
#19, you're talking about mobile PhoneTools, which'll probably sell for about $40 in the store. unfortunately, the mp3 codecs do not come with the software, so you can make ringtones with the software, but can't send 'em to the phone.
however, you can from here:

John Henry Brown @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
A better title for this article is: "RAZR V3c advertising debuts on Verizon." The phone isn't here yet. Are you going to say, "We really mean it this time, it's debuting, honest" when the phone actually ships?
joey @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
I currently have a verizon v3c. I had the first v3 razr. Its pretty much the same. no expansion slot and its not thicker then the gsm verison. the vcast works great with the evdo. I also have the v3i, which in my opinion is better, then the v3c.
Garrett @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
This phone is much better than the Cingular version. It has a better camera, EVDO, and more ram. I am not even going to talk about the better network...... :)
Silence @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
You're not going to see many more phones from ANY vendor with AMPS (analog) support as everyone from the chipset vendors on down start to finish the transition to pure digital. A couple of years ago, the FCC approved the carriers ending support for AMPS beginning in 2008. The chipset vendors, like Qualcomm, have already begun dropping support, so don't expect to see many (if any at all) EVDO phones with AMPS support.
huge @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
The Razr isn't available anywhere on the verizon site, as far as I can tell. I've tried looking up the phone on the verizon shop site, i've tried "upgrading" my phone... no deal. Where the hell is this thing?
Andy @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
It's available to me now, as an optional phone to upgrade to.

Can't link directly to the phone's page.
dude @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
does this new razr have a new phonebook software? as in i can enter more than one number per person instead of jane home, jane mobile, jane work?
Dave @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
You can purchase the Razr on the VerizonWireless website, I purchased one lastnight at 10pm PST 1amEST it is $419.00 outright, $20 for the holster, and $30 for the car charger. I will ebay my Treo 650, so it will be a wash. Enjoy!
