Apple's Intel Macs coming in June after all?
As much as we'd all love to believe those rumors about Intel Macs in January, they did seemed to go quite against the grain of what we were hearing before. Now it's coming full circle, with rumors spreading from Taiwanese distributors to not expect that x86 goodness until June. They're saying that the whole consumer line is due for Intel processors on June 6th in Taiwan, and though it's hard to know who to believe, keep in mind that Stevie J. himself didn't promise Intel macs until June, and we're sure he's in the loop on this somewhere. No telling what the other "signs" of an early launch might actually mean, or what exactly these Taiwanese rumorists are privy to anyways, but the bets at the Engadget HQ are firmly hedged on this one.

So what exactly would be stopping Apple from releasing, maybe, the macintel mini in january...the hardware is ready, the software, from what ive heard looks about ready, why not do january? It would make headlines around the globe. Add to that the new updated itunes store, and you have a winning combination. Please correct me if that all sounds too simple!
DigiTimes doesn't exactly have the best track record though; they claimed iBook and Powerbook G5, yes G5, would be released in in Q2 2005, 8 months ago!
It seems like they just picked June 6, 2006 as the release date since it's exactly one year later. Perhaps they're taking the "by this time next year" thing too seriously
Seeing all of this is just rumor, we shouldn't put too much wait on any of these statements anyway. It doesn't matter whether it's Think Secret or DigiTimes, they aren't in the loop and shouldn't be taken seriously without a block of salt.
Seeing how Steve said "by this time next year" (referring to WWDC 2006), that's all we can really hope for. I say we all just set our expectations really low (WWDC '06). This way, if Apple releases their stuff earlier, we can all (pretend? to) be surprised and just be happy that our wait is over.
#4: right on!
"It doesn't matter whether it's Think Secret or DigiTimes, they aren't in the loop..."
That's funny, TS seems to be in the loop plenty. That guy's broken tons of stuff open. He can't be pulling it out of his keister.
wasn't the first big apple comercial againsst IBM at the superbowl? maybe they will do something big there?
And... regarding the mac mini, i would think that if they want to make is a living room device it's going to need a new form factor, more like a dvd player or something cool looking.
Steve Never said they will be debuting in June He said they would be talking about it in June. Go watch the WWDC again you will see what I mean.
June 6, 2006? 6/6/6? Digitimes is clearly just trying to spread rumors that Steve Jobs is the devil!
I agree with #6, ThinkSecret is usually right about what they put out, and that stands for something. They might not be in the loop, but they're about as close as you can get, from what I've seen. Digitimes much less so.
Aw heck, But I wanted a Xen 3.0/OS X/Solaris/Windows/Linux laptop by the end of January!!!
ohhhh frank. you just single-handedly justified the engadget comment boards. bless you.
quoting jobs and digitimes. are you really serious?
jobs bashed video ipods until the day it came out, digitimes has about the poorest record of rumors, and you guys are placeing bets?
need i go on?
marketing tactic maybe?
if i tell you a new computer is coming out next month,
would you buy now or wait 4 weeks?
so ill tell you 6 months,
and so now you really need a computer,
would u wait 6 months,
no . . .
make everyone think they are further down the pipeline,
the intel announcement hurt mac sales, but not by much.
i think the release date had something to do with it.
now release products early, and everyone jump on the bandwagon !
i say, the intel macs will be announced in January to create a buzz...but there's a catch
they won't be shipped till March or April
Regarding #12's comments that launching on 6/6/6 would be evil, the price of the Apple I was $666. Jobs has always seemed to have an affinity for this particular number :)
I'm guessing the DVR in January, and the rest in June
im doubting a built in dvr.
the cable companies have DVR under control.
and DVR's usually degrade hard drive quality over a shorter time.
i just dont think its needed by apple. maybe some sort of integration with the cable companies dvr, and apples interface. just like the dvd player on front row. mac mini connects to dvr via firewire and a deal with scientific atlanta would allow this.
Why does Engadget post any and all rumors that come their way regardless of how ridiculous they are?
Digitimes is not a legitimate source. In fact they are wrong about just about everything. They are worse than MOSR. As someone else pointed out, they reported on G5 iBooks earlier this year including who was making them for Apple along with the projected quantities. Never happened. Never was going to happen. They made it all up.
With all the analysts reporting on Intel macs due in January Apple would have stepped in with a press release clarifying the situation by now. They can't afford the negative press that would follow if they were not to announce them in January. They've done this before when rumors became "facts" in the financial community to this extent.
funny how they deleted my reply lol
hahahahaha
digitimes took down the link to max os x for intel that was supposedly available now (which just linked to mac os x for ppc update page).
losers.
Guess I would call this "Macintel".
Has anyone here played with tiger_x86? it's nice, once you get it all together. i had to replace my mailer server with the box i was using for tiger_x86. I recommend you try it so get a feel for what to expect in the future.....
