ESI's JamMate UG-1 USB guitar
If you're going to be rocking out in those nerd-boy threads, and without a guitar strap to support your axe, you might as well go all the way and make sure it plugs in via USB. ESI professional, over in Korea, are busting out the JamMate UG-1 in '06 that does just that, and they're selling it for a nice $199, though that price straight up guarantees a fairly low quality instrument. They're bundling some "Amplitube" amp modelling software to mess with your tone, and hope to release a USB bass and USB drum set to round out your 3-piece punk outfit.

I recall reading an article about Gibson gearing up to heavily push a "digital" Les Paul with straight-up cat5 output back maybe two years ago. I haven't really seen anything since then... anyone have a heads up? Engadget, want to dig some stuff up for us?

He doesn't need a guitar strap. I'm sure he's wearing one of those tie clip guitar holders (pretty standard rock'n'roll accessories).

Fender has sued and won for companies infringing on their headstock design, but hasn't been as successful with body designs. That's why when other companies copy the strat or tele design they almost always have a different headstock.

Also cool that you can listen to it directly with headphones... I'll wait for the firewire version, because it plays faster.

It flopped. Gibson's high-end market is in traditional guitarists, who are fairly intent on keeping their sound real. When this was actually brought to market they sold very few. The other problem was that Roland, whilst Gibson were developing the CAT5 guitar, brought to market their GK pickup and range of guitar synths, meaning gibson were outdone in terms of both first to market and product capability.

I'm wrong...

Though whether they've sold many I'd love to know...
