Fujitsu/Hitachi unseat Panasonic for title of "World's Smallest 1080p Plasma"
Fujitsu and Hitachi have reached a new "low" in the somewhat humorous competition among display manufacturers to
produce the "world's smallest" 1080p plasma. The new 1920 x 1080 42-inch PDP snatches the title from previous record
holder Panasonic, whose 50-inch model seems positively
huge in comparison. This 16:9 widescreen features a 3000:1 contrast ratio and 1000 cd/m2 brightness—no word yet on
pricing or availability, but we'll be following this story closely, as you can be sure that the 42-incher isn't the
last contender we'll see in this heated battle.

"3000:1 contrast ration"
Damn, I hate it when they ration my contrast.
Honestly, there's a market for these things. At the moment, it's really only served by LCD, but a lot of people would rather have the better black level of plasma while still being able to fit a TV in a tight space, given equal resolution.
Plasma still does have burn-in and other issues that make it less suited for dual HDTV/PC use, which is what a lot of people use those 37" LCD screens for today.
Next year, when SED displays jump into the market, they will make these plasmas look like crap.
In europe, where everything is smaller (including our energy consuming levels and houses)42 inch is pretty top notch. the main sold size here is 32" and even 26" so plasma isn't that big here.
1080p on small screens will be popular when these stupid european tv stations will start boradcasting it !@#$%^&*
I'd be interested in something like this. I don't have a lot of room in my apartment, so I need a smaller set. But I don't want to skimp on the resolution either.
I am holding out for a 27"... That would be Ah-mazing. Maybe even a 13"...
thats nothing, i have a 2" screen on my cell phone....
why brag about a 'smaller' display anyway?
falcom, come on man (you're kidding right) ...
your cell phone display has a resolution of like 10 x 12; for a total of 120 pixels. It might even be a 2 x 4 display ... I don't know how cheapy your cell phone is.
These TVs have a resolution of 1920 x 1080 ... try putting all those pixels into a small display.
But a 720P cell phone would be SWEET!
Dumb comment, falcom.
Imagine a 2" screen with the resolution of printed paper.
That's what this technology is headed towards.
Does this mean they will announce a 50" 1080p? If they could cram pixels into 42" ...
Note to manufacturers:
I need a 27-30 inch 1080p display ASAP. Sharp are you listening? It needs to be able to support its native resolution for a computer input 1920x1080. Also, stop making fixed pixel displays that do not have a native resolutions divisible by 8! Thanks.
I don't get why they don't make smaller LCD 1920x1080 pixel displays. My laptop monitor is 15.4" and has that resolution.
You mean 1920x1200 on a laptop? Thats what it actually is on my Dell 15.3" Inspiron and that was 2 1/2 years ago. Sometimes I fear that my next notebook will be back to fat pixels because Dell just sold these from some experimental lot and there aren't going to make mistake of such high resolution until all money has been made from 780p(s) etc.
Back to the topic, why is it so difficult to make panel larger than 15.3" with this same resolution with same cost effectiveness? Gosh they even have more room for ultra-ultra bright lamps in TV casing.

(I see what they're doing with the diminishing text, but ... did they only realize 5 minutes before the press unveiling that they had nothing to show off?)
