The Dell 3007WFP to drop Jan 5th
They're not
saying much about it, but apparently Dell's forthcoming 30-inch 3007WFP display is a)
real, and b) actually going to be announced during CES according to their site (hence their "check back on Jan 5,
2006" message), and c) has better specs as Apple's 30-inch Cinema display (those being same 2560 x 1600
resolution, but 700:1 contrast ratio over 400:1, 11ms over 16ms, and 400cd/m2 brightness over 270). Frankly we're a
little bummed they're gonna miss the holiday rush with this one, but somehow we have a feeling a 30-inch display, Dell
or not, is still one of those things we'd have to pony up for ourselves.
[Thanks, Matt and Chet]
Update: for all those interested, the 3007WFP user manual has indeed surfaced. And it does quite in fact show the unit as having a SD / MMC / Memory Stick / SmartMedia / CompactFlash card reader and HDCP support. Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

First post :D and yes, i'm a one year old.
I wanna see the specs.
Who cares? It's the same panel as Apple's 30", will most likely have the same MSRP, and will just have the crummy Dell "styling".
Another ho-hum from an industry follower.
Anyone know how much it'll cost?
uh... Jan 5/2005 already passed....
2560X1600
11ms
700:1....
I want one

So, what are you waiting for:
http://www.apple.com/displays/
I'm guessing around $2,000 for this... They have to get under the Apple Cinema display...
Crossing fingers for Composite/Component/S-Video/DVI/VGA connections...
Crap, I wanted that sooooo bad for Christmas ....LAST YEAR!
"Jan 5/2005"
Oh well, I guess there is always this year?
I'll be surprised if this has any connections but HDCP enabled ones.
I just bought a Dell 2405fpw a few mo ago. Now I need to figure out a case for getting one of these! What a sweet display. Be sure you have a dual link DVI cable for this pixel monster!
well, it turns out dell still lacks a design team.
Delicious.
Hopefully this will spark a price war between Apple and Dell....
and subsequently a p0rn war between our somewhat affordable 30" dual display rigs.
This does look like it is going to be awesome, but probably not worth the upgrade for those with the popular 24" widescreen by Dell. Although that is an extra 6" of screen space for you.

who cares about the brand rivalry anyway?
it's not like either company makes the displays themselves.
besides, even though the specs are better on the dell, apple's display came out a full year earlier.
I dunno, the exterior design looks good to me. I don't need some Cupertino 20-something's idea of tasteful bling sitting on my desk. Give me some nice old school black or grey bezel and I'm set.
I'm gonna wait for the coupon...

The frame is black whats there to see? I have the 24" and blacked out the dell logo. At least this one has a new base. Do the Apples swivel? or have as many adjustments? or
5 different video inputs? Ohh yea and I paid $790 3 months ago.
Will it support HD for the Xbox 360? :/
Man, I just got the 24" Dell and it seems enormouse, I don't even know how I'd deal with a monitor this big.
I have a 2405fpw and I love it. I would love to get one of these if I didn't play games. It's already hard enough on you wallet to buy a good enough graphics card to output 1920x1200 with good graphical settings turned on, but with this behemoth, you are pretty much going to have to have a dual graphics card setup and goods ones at that. I would say if you are a gamer, take dell's price and add about $1000 to it (more if u dont have a mobo that can do dual cards) and thats what it is going to take to run this thing. Oh, and if you think just turning the res down for gaming is gonna work, the picture turns to crap.
Sweet baby Jesus that is SO fine! Considering what their 24" is priced at, I think we should see this sucker well under 2k.
One more comment: Dont know how much the stand is like the 176FP (looks a lot like it), but the 176FP do not have height adjustment, swivel, or turn side to side. Course the 176FP is a much cheaper monitor, but the stand on this picture of the 3007 looks just like the one on the 176FP.
Darn, thought of something else, 720p xbox360 signals or HDTV for that matter are not gonna look awesome cause it will have to strech, upscale, fill (whatever) to fit the screen. Even with all my ranting though, i still would love to have one. :)
if it has component and/or hdmi inputs i'll be all over it (but I won't hold my breath for the hdmi). i guess that at this resolution, DVI is a given.
Hmm, is it just me or does the link not work anymore?
I'm hoping that the Dell will come in around $1,700CDN since the comparable Dell 24" vs the Apple 23" is a bunch cheaper too.
This should work for games if you scale it down to a 2:1 resolution ratio yes? I don't think you would need a dual card setup for desktop work at native.
Al Gore invented this last year.
http://AlGoreLabs.com
Guys, we should all be very impressed with specifications like these but if you will, I'd like to offer my 2 cents.: First of all, I'm typing to you from a Marantz LC3250 which is a 32 inch true 16:9 display. It's native resolution is only 1366x768 which can be driven 1:1 from a 7800GT/X or the ATI 1800 series. I was very excited about the apple display a while back but there are several reasons I changed my mind and went "lower def".
Reason 1: Resolution: Yes, 2560x1600 is WAY too many pixels. Don't get me wrong, for regular desktop use, this is fantastic but consider gaming in 1 to 1 for a moment. Have you ever seen how bad your 17 inch looks when you kick back the resolution from 1280x1024 to 1024x768? You get pixel doubling and all sorts of scaling and it looks awful. In addition, it sacrifices both your DVI connections which keeps you from going dualhead.
Reason #2 Speed: Yes, speed, your machine is not fast enough to render games or movies with any kind of scaling worth mentioning. If you want to scale to the native resolution of the screen, I hope you have a much more serious rig than I do because a Athlon 64, 4000 wiht a 7800 GTX 512 is NOT going to cut it :)
Reason #3 Connectivity and HDTV: If you want to use this thing to do anything other than be a monitor, you may want to consider that it's fairly unlikely it will have connections like Component Video or Standard DVI. This means that if you don't have a bleeding edge dish tuner, you will be connecting using 15 pin analog.
Conclusion: There is nothing wrong with this TV but consider the resolutions you game in and the native resolution of HDTV content. Running 1:1 to source material always looks better than anything else. When I play NFS most wanted in 1024x768, I get 1:1 mapping with black bars on the left and right. Games that DO support widescreen always offer 1280x768 and can usually be configured to run in 1366x768 with a little messing around. You won't be able to drive this display for anything other than desktop/professional use in its native glory for at least another year with current GPU technology.
Cheers,
Josh.
this thing's gonna need a good graphic process to back that 20" screen up
I love it! City of Villians on a 30" monitor! w00t!
What the story on the 24". Weren't they also gonna redo that with better specs and HDCP? Like to see such with one of those tripod bases. Anyone know?
Knowing Dell they will have this monitor available for 1 week, and then tell all their customers it's going end of life. Then they can do their bait-and-switch techniques to get you to buy a crappier and more expensive model.
requires a dual-link dvi port on your video card. otherwise, i've been very happy with the unit i've been checking . . . .
Are you gys serious....
"Oh it looks so ugly, it's not Apple Silver, laaaame. If it doesn't have fruit on it, I don't want it. - Fanboi"
Silver's the second worse color for a monitor display, right after white.
Black provides a better viewing experience. I guess every non-fanboi knows that.
I like the 24's base better. All-black bezel is better too. Helps with the apparent contrast. The 24's got silver on the side, so there's your nod to the Sony XBR flatscreens.
Once you see the comparison pics, of the 30" next to a 24", the new one will look so much bigger that you'll be crying for one.
By the way, I just bought a second 24" for my office. With all the extra hardware I'd need for a 30", I'd stick with the 24 anyway since the onboard video for my new AOpen shoebox-sized PC can handle the 24's 1920x1200 (not a gamer).
So when this thing is well under the price point of Apple's sexy over hyped 30" will you still complain about the design? I suppose you guys who own a 30" Apple will find out just exactly how much money you tossed out on a sexy design when this Dell drops.
#2: Who cares? It's the same panel as Apple's 30", will most likely have the same MSRP, and will just have the crummy Dell "styling".
Why? They already have LCD panels out there that significantly undercut Apple's offering despite being the same product. Why would this be any different?
#19 is right. I underestimated the toll that the high res of the 2405 panel would take on my video card. FEAR is pretty much unplayable at native resolution on a 6800GT. (Which, granted, is a last generation video card playing a current generation game.) In any case, going from driving 2.3MP to 4.0MP of goodness is going to take almost double the processing power to render. (Just a back of the envelope guess, 74% more pixels should be at least 74% more work since it should be rendering at the increased resolution, not just upscaling a signal)
Anyways, I wonder if one of those 7800GTX 512s could pull it off solo pretty well, or maybe it'd take like 2 7800 GT/GTX 256s to perform well?
Perhaps you're thinking that'd be overkill but according to http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/09/seven_of_nvidia/page38.html at Toms Hardware, 2 7800GTX 256s running in SLI only drive FEAR (on ultra quality) to 59fps at a resolution of 1280x960. I guess time will tell, it will be interesting anyways.
Any news on the new 20" and 24" displays that were supposed to come out alongside it with HDCP support?
I just bought myself 2 x 2405s because they were on sale in Canada. I'm more than happy with what I have.
And I could care less about the styling of the monitor - I'm looking at the screen, not at the case (which I think is fine anyway).
Contrast ratio of 700:1 maybe great for gamers but Apples monitors are used by graphic pros that need to match colors to printed paper. so 400:1 is ok with them.
Gah. I'm torn.
I was planning on getting the 24" monitor for my monitor/gaming/tv, but 24" widescreen is a little small for multiplayer halo (particualrly more than 2 player).
30" would be perfect, but damn, I don't have that kinds of money :/
I have the 24 and love it and can play some games at 19X12 on it but the rez on this 30 is so high I'm not too sure it would handle games unless you were running SLI. But for Photoshop editing and 2D work it would be amazing.
The 2405 is priced this way because they're going to be moving to the 2407 soon. I just got the 24" when i bought my xps 400. So I'll either be getting the 24" at a sweet price steal OR upgrading to this 30" behemoth.
For me it's not about outputting the games at the greatest resolution. It's more so about using it for dual duty as a Television set for my otherwise small apt.
found some nice 2560x1600 resolution wallpapers for my 30" apple cinema display at interfacelift. same size as for this sweet new dell.
http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/resolutions.php?w=2560
Jason3fc,
"I'll be surprised if this has any connections but HDCP enabled ones."
Why? There is no reason why they can't have HDMI with HDCP and composite and component in. There is no line out after all. As long as the signal from the system to the device is encrypted there is no reason why it can't support all the other standards.
"Hopefully this will spark a price war between Apple and Dell"
Apple doesn't DO price wars.
Styling? Are you guys on crack?
When the thing is lit, the thin bezel and that small base are going to fill just what fractional percentage of your remaining field of vision? Not much, no.
How more minimal do you want?
Man.. I wish I had money to burn. 2560x1600 is very nice for general desktop use. Personally I wouldn't consider buying one for playing games.
I bought the 20 inch about 6 months ago and it's sweet ... add in another 10" and my credit cards are getting chills already ...
The upcoming Samsung 30" panel is faster, 8ms, and has more Contrast.
http://www.samsung.com/Products/TFTLCD/Monitors_n_Industrial/LTM300M1/LTM300M1.htm
for those who are saying "look how much better and cheap this is comparing to what apple has to offer", please keep in mind that apple came up with theirs a long time ago, so the specs and pricepoints are not as competitive.
in my opinion, specs and benchmarks don't mean much to me... i care more about real-life performance and price. if a cheap 5 year old computer can do your tasks perfectly, why pay all the extra money to have an expensive new computer with the best specs and benchmarks? similarly, one should look at the screens, test them out (thoroughly) by doing different daily tasks, and then determine which 1 is better for their needs.
Dell was scheduled to come out with a new line of LCD monitors, the flagship being the 3007WFP (not a typo) 30" LCD just before the holidays.
Here are the specs from Dell pre-release techsheet
Display Size: 30 inch
Response Time: 14ms
Brightness: 400cd/m2
Contrast: 700:1
Viewing Angle: 178/178
Native Resolution: WQXGA (2560 x 1600)
PC Connectivity: DVI-D (Dual link) x 1 with HDCP
Others: 4-Port USB Hub, 9-in-1 Multimedia Card Reader/Slots, Height Adjustable Stand, Swivel & Tilt. (No pivot)
Release for North America was scheduled for December 21
Will it need a different graphics card like the Apple one? If it doesn't then that would be a real improvement - especially plugged into my Mac mini!
Bah.
If I had an unlimited supply of money I would get one of those IBM T221s. The one that's 22.1" with 9.2 million pixels at 3840x2400.
Now THAT is high-res.
Using a ProView 32 inch display for quite some time and its just fine. $999 - Costco. Forget Dell. Forget Apple.
Sure Apple has one for $2,500. Dell will be selling this for $1500-$1800
If this is the 3007, they'll probably freshen the 24 to 2407 as well. Maybe there will be some inventory-clearing deals on the 2405. If so, I'll buy another. I got my first 2405 for $780...if the price dips lower than that I'm buying a second one for sure! Dual 2405, sweet!!
Just to add my .02, I have the apple cinema 30 and a AMD FX-53 with a 7800GTX running world of warcraft at 2560x1600 with all the graphics options on except full screen glow effects and the top shadow effects one. I'm at 55-60 fps 90% of the time. I also run EQ2 at 2560x1600 in balanced for non raids and high performance for raids and everything is fine. So just get a nice processor and a 7800GTX and you're fine. Mind you the 7800 only has one dual link DVI (the other connector is single link), so unless you're buying two 7800s (and not running in SLI mode), you can't go dual 30s too well yet.
well, it turns out Apple still lacks a sales team.
apple lovers leave please since the only thing you complained about was the style. there's nothing wrong with it. i love how they never talk about the features like height adjustability, multiple inputs, better resolution and refresh rate. all they talk about is the way it looks. lol.
I don't know about all this gaming stuff, but what I do know is 9 tabling, with little to no overlap.... soooooooooo niiiiicceeeeee!
p.s. ultimate in studio apartment LCDing....
p.s.s gimmie
400cd/m2 is worse, not better, than 270cd/m2 if you're doing photo retouching, which requires a brightness setting of about 140cd/m2. Excessive brightness is precisely what makes the 2405fpw unsuitable for photo retouching. It's a shame they keep ruining otherwise great displays in pursuit of the home theater market. Apple's brightness numbers are lower because Apple understands what its users actually need.
As a large screen user and workspace fanatic I already have the FABULOUS 2405fpw, attached to my dual G5, on my desk.
As far as I'm concerned even a 2405fpw isn't big enough and 2 of those aren't the right choice either as you never have someting "big" right in front of you...
I did choose another option : one 2405fpw (in the midle) and two "cheap" 17 inch (1280 x 1024) (one on each side at aprox 30degrees) the "big 2405fpw" main workplace.
I purchased a second video card for the thid screen.
In my opinion, this option is not only cheaper but also much better as I can concentrate on the big one for "work" and put al other stuff (palettes, mail, skype, EyeTv, network drives etc...) on the small ones.
The 2405fpw cost will now drop a little and for those who are workspace hungry this may well be a better option to consider, but I have to aknowlege the 30 may well become my "central" screen ...
They announced it on their website:

Looking at the prices between Dell and Apple and extrapolating, it looks like the Dell will retail at $2000 but probably usually sell below $1800 after coupons/deals, etc. I think that's worth it considering it'll make a pretty nice TV display.
I have a question though. I'm not a gamer but I want to get the monitor anyway, so I won't need it to perform at peak quality, but I need it to run at 2560x1600. What video cards can I get for this? I know I need a dual-link DVI and it has to support that resolution. I read that a GeForce 7800GTX should do the trick. Can anything less do it?
Thanks for your help.
dont fofget not graphic cards support the max resolution except the all in wonder X1800XL(AIW), note it is the all in wonder version and not the XT but XL
I have 2 20" @ work, and a 2005PW @ home. The 2005, is too small(it's really a 17" widened). I think I'll get a new one of these for work and keep one of the 20's for my 2nd screen. I much prefer the resolution I can get on the 20s versus the 2005FPW.
