iRiver's G10: more deets on the WiBro'in game console
We finally got a
pic and a few more specs on iRiver's G10 WiBro game
console we told you about a few months back. If our Babelrean is any good, then it appears like iRiver's "PSP
killer" will sport an 800 x 480 pixel 260k color display, pack in 4 or 8GB of storage, and run Windows CE 5.0.
Looks like it'll be on display at CES so we'll be sure to track this one down for ya. Another pic after the break.
Update: According to our friend Jason, that WiBro connection will not only be used for online gaming and game downloads, but also provide access to a new iRiver music and movie service allowing subscribers to purchase content, store it in provided webspace, and then stream it to their G10.
[Thanks, James]

Seems the game has a 1 image per hour framerate according to the two pics. Yeah!
Nothing looks more fun than having one of those.
Im buying one. Will match my U10 perfectly.
This is what the PSP should have had.
It'll be interesting to see the pricing as well as the kinds of games this thing'll play.
Ugh, what a terrible d-pad.
ooooohh boooooo!! boooooooooo!!!!
I'm disappointed. That thing looks more like a DS killer at best. Com'on, add a keyboard, PDA stylin. Why can't these companies listen and make a device for us?
Some one gonna put Linux in it after lunch for sure! And if it have some BT capable... it will be very lovely.
Windows CE 5.0?
Looks like a PDA replacement.
"Ugh, what a terrible d-pad."
Agreed. In fact, the whole controller setup looks horribly difficult to use.
FINALLY! A decent resolution screen on a handheald! Now if only they'd put in a larger HDD this'd make the perfect PMP. Pity it runs Windows instead of Linux (unlike the GP2X).
That thing actually DOES look pretty sweet, but the form factor may not be all that comfortable. I'm also wondering who gave the green light to that D-Pad. If it's a PSX style "under the plastic the buttons are connected" thing, that's fine. If they're individual buttons, it can go to hell.
the game that is playing is actually a very popular online Kart racing game amongst kids in Korea.
I see they have KT branding on there too which likely means there will be some kind of product tie-in with Korea Telecom's services. Likely, they will be offering a wi-bro service.
Looks promising except for the d-pad...
I agree with others. If this has 2 decent games, I'll sell my POS PSP. Internal storage, great resolution, hideaway controls for movie watching, ability to run custom software and EMULATORS!
BAM!
I'm there.
No analog stick? No "speaker" hehehe... that could be an analog stick? Looks like a hand-killer from trying to hold the thing. screen is nice, tho.
PSP killer? This thing would be lucky to kill the NGAGE. I predict an entire software library filled with titles like Zuma, Bejeweled, 100 other cellular phone quality puzzle games, and of course, ports of every game EA releases.
If you really think there's room for another hand held video game console, buy some stock in Tiger... The Gizmondo will be huge!
26K colours? Have we gone back in time to the Gameboy Colour or sumthin?! :D
sweet mario kart killer.
BTW the game showcased is the most popular korean multiplayer game currently, if i'm not mistaken. it has the most number of users in the world. if this device has that title it should do relatively ok in korea at least.
I predict a flop in gaming terms. The battery life will most probably be horrible with that screen and hard drive, and the buttons look AWFUL - i'd hate to be holding that thing for more than 30 mins.
I've ordered a GP2X a few days ago, it seems to be promising enough.
I can't see much in terms of commercial games either - and the windows OS isn't as good as Linux for developers. Oh well, i'll let it be. Someone please email me when i've been proven wrong...
Holy Schnike, Batman!
Looks pretty sweet. If iRiver can be competitive on price and offers some decent games (or, the holy grail, a free dev kit), we could see a third player in the handheld market.
My only concern is the ergonomics. It doesn't look like it'd be comfortable to play games on this for more than 30 minds at a time. Also, the lack of an analog stick limits gameplay possibilities.
You all that are ragging on it for being Windows Mobile based... think about the emulators that already exist? Playstation, SNES, NES, Genesis... everything really... and they run at full speed unlike the GP32 (not sure how the GP2X will do, but it doesnt seem to have a large leap in performance)
Isn't the DS the PSP killer?
Actually if it supports flash and is wide open it could be a really good contender.
I love iRIver!~
This is what the video iPod should have been just with scroll wheel and some buttons on the bottom part...
A nice screen like that is what you need to really enjoy watching video on the go...
Not to mention how cool album art and videos would look on that... jesus apple if your design team is reading this right now ... tell them to get busy
I want a Video iPod that looks like this...
Awful control pad it looks like (and very scrunched/little spacing for the hands maybe?)
iPod is just still an iPod. It's not video iPod. It just has video playback capabilities in it. Main function for it is still playing music. So most people want it to be small.
"Isn't the DS the PSP killer?"
Laughs my ass off, hell no
the 26k colors is a typo. it's 262k or something like that.
26k color is obviously an error. It has to be either 65k or 262k. In this case, I would assume it is 262k.
*cough* Zodiac *cough*
PSP Kill no...hand killer yes...they'd need lots of support to keep media going on it or lots of movies and storage. And it will have to be about $200 or it's gonna end up in the Tech GraveYard
Remember this thing next year when Nintendo rolls out their GameBoy Evolution...I bet it'll be very similar.
Wow, really nice design.
Good job.

You're right:
Quote from Gameshout: "The G10 sports a 4-inch WVGA screen capable of displaying 260K colors."

Doesn't seem very confortable.
its got that sexy PSP-esque look. nice big widescreen which would b good 4 video. internal HDD. a Windows OS so emulators are automatically a factor.
but.....the ergonomics look horrible. it looks like it would be top heavy with that big screen pushed up 2 the top like that. and the lack of analog sticks rules out lots of the 3D aspects off the bat. (expect alot of racing games and side-scrollers). and that D-pad has the buttons 2 far apart 4 them 2 b like the playstation's D-pad, they gotta b their own separate buttons which would suck. and speaking of suck, think of how much battery power this thing would eat (but hell, PSP is doing ok wit shitty battery life so...).
but overall, with a few cosmetic changes and good developer support (which i dont think it will get lol) it could make a legitamate 3rd option in the handheld department.
looks great need more specs. btw someone always has to add a comment about ipod when i isnt relevent to the thread. suckers
Hey it might be good. But as for right now nothing at all beats the Tapwave Zodiac. Lets hope that 26k is a typo. It almost has to be.
PSP killer? ummmmm....let me see the selection of games first. This will be short lived just like the N-Gage and tapwave.
well it looks good but a ds or psp killer its not. fps are out but as for emulators like snes, nes, and maybe mame will be a possibilty with windows os. i will stick to my psp and ds but has for enjoying old school games this might be a third option to look for granted on final price listing.
Niceeee i like it more than the U10, it has way better memory than the psp, but still not enough if it wants to be a media player. By the way whats the battery life on these,is it removable, and does it support line in/out.
Hello,
Very cool. I would like to see more of this and detailed specs. I am also curious of when this is coming out since we Gadget-Crazy would like tp purchase a container load of them like we did psp's. Thats why sony had hardly any stock left. We made a huge margain profit and sold so many now we are simply looking for the next gadget to make Gadget-Crazy big.
If anyone is looking for a commision bases job and working at a premises with a phone desk and computer with FANTASTIC premesis please contact us at

does the screen on the bottom pic look a little tilted or is it just me?
Also, there is an iriver logo on the bottom pic but not on the top. Strange much?
that screen may be the same one as is in the nokia 770. whitch is beautafull. Well my nokia 770 is the toy for me even though it only has a 1Gb memory card in it. It forfills my geek needs to tinker runns linux and i can SSH and VNC into my home machiene.
Not a PSP killer, it's more just a media player with "enhanced" gaming features. Those controls are like the SNES controller. Games - PSP ALL THE WAY!!! Media - Hey, I don't see why the iRiver ain't better. Hackable - PSP
Looks sweet, I Imediately said, "I want one", but 26k is kinda lame. and why an arrow pad! geez, if it has the moviey paddie thingy that the PSP had I would be drooling even more. I hate iRiver, but that thing is slick, can't wait for CES coverage!!!
oh your right, 260k makes more sense, and the internal HD is great, the only way I think I would really buy it thought is after it gets linux, or a browser. but that HD is just great, Im smiling, I probably can't afford getting it though. *sigh* but a browser, and more info would be cool
you guyz must be joking. This gaming console is intended for current PC online games such as lineage 2, Kart raider, Ragnarok online and so on... But we don't need to worry about this monster digital player because it will take months for us to receive Wibro technology (a non-IP based mobile Wimax which accelerates as fast as 8Mbps). I don't think that the iriver will compete with PSP. This thing is intended purely for people who play World of warcraft or other online games. I think this will indeed make a great hit as soon as countries open their network to Wi-Bro, yet PSP will sale as good. I mean, PSP and the iriver are completely different gadget targeted for completely different customers. I don't mean to say that either one is better. I feel that they also met the world's best partner for mobile internet. KT owns nearly 75% of world's netspot for Wi-Fi which can be used as Wi-Bro network. What else can i say more? Let us first see the actual model in the CES2006.
Can't wait for the next gen OQO. Wonder if it will run Linux?

not worth buying, in my opinion. a computer is a much more versatile machine, and for a good price too ;)
you gotta be kidding, in now way would this even be a remote competitor with the psp.
1.) nobody cares about raganork troll honey sack iii.
2.) that lame handheld GPX2304 SUXEDDOOoRz u know that crap with linix or whatever was on it.
3.) wtf "iRiver" is not a catchy name, you would be luky to fool middle class 40 year old mid life crises balding men trying to be cool and have somthing with their ipod nano. the iriver isnt that special.
4.) nobody cares about koreas biggest game.OOOO A MARIO KART CLONE!!! what koreans need to do is pick up a copy of battlefield2 and a pair of nut sacks.
