Philips Entertaible melds video gaming with traditional board gaming

Philips unveiled the Entertaible prototype, a 30-inch horizontal LCD tabletop unit, which features touch screen and multi-object position detection. The Entertaible will be capable of reproducing classic board games with a twist: they'll never be the same twice. It's clear that Philips is banking on people's need for tactile social interaction, but can the Entertaible stand up to a child's touch?

I think that's actually a pretty neat idea - though not too sure LCD is the best type of screen tech for rolling dice on! How about E-ink boardgames? And if no-one's thought of that I claim the patents myself....

30 inch LCD? You must really have to love Monopoly to spend that much on a game table.
Not to mention that for almost every board game, each player would have to have some kind of Nintendo DS type unit for his private information - money in Monopoly, detective pad in Clue, rack of letters in Scrabble, etc....

I wonder how long before someone runs linux on it.

This would really make Settlers of Catan much easier, since it requires you to build a random board each time anyway, using hexagonal tiles that are prone to slipping and sliding away.

#5, there is a way to do this on the table. players can have an object similar to the scrabble letter holders which operate as a visor. you hold it at the edge of the table and slowly life it up and/or move it toward the center to look at your contents.
