CES: Pioneer's 1080p plasma

If Pioneer is trying to reposition themselves as a high-end consumer manufacturer, they are doing a damn good job at it. First, they brought us that sweet 1080p Blu-Ray player and now something to play it on: a 50-inch 1080p plasma. The only difference is that this set can receive and play 1080p through HDMI.

The set will be available in June and will cost $8,000. That money however will not get you a dedicated media box that other Pioneer's sport. In fact, this set does not have any tuner at all making it simply a monitor. Pioneer is claiming that these bells and whistles were eliminated as a cost cutting measure.

Fine by me. As long as I can get pure 1080p, who needs a tuner?
