Proving they can run with the big dogs like
Voodoo and
Alienware, Dell introduced their XPS 600 Renegade
during Michael Dell's keynote. You're
immediately drawn to the custom painted case courtesy of
Mike Lavallee from Killer Paint, but it's
what inside that matters most. Fired by a factory overclocked Intel Extreme Edition running at 4.26GHz, the
Renegade fully supports four graphics cards. To be more specific, those zippy cards are NVIDIA's GeForce 7800 SLI
cards; two fit in the PCI-Express slots and two more are slaved from those, each with 512MB of memory. Can you say
super high res at mucho frames per second? Storage is a non-issue as Dell planned ahead with one 10,000 RPM 150GB drive
and two 250GB drives running at 7,200 RPM. Dell expects this custom hardware available by end of the month and we're
looking at the $4,000 to $7,000 range, depending on options. Not that there's room for more in this hot box, but what
else could or would you add?
*sigh*
when will you learn, dell, that it's not how many horsepower your car has, but how well it can use them.
Looks pretty awesome.
How about OS X?
What else could or would I add?
An AMD Proccessor
DUH
-Baldwin
I would add some style/taste to that paintjob.
Factory Water-cooling for the CPU and all four GFX cards.
Its less of an "add" than a remove: THE DELL BADGE
Poor Sod Its just a generisicsm the company can't/won't shake off with things like this.
wow...that thing is only a demo and still on fire...and not in a good way
i really don't like heat when it comes to computers
Wouldn't it be more appropriate if it said 'HELL' on the side instead???
Those 250GB hard drives run at 7,200 RPM, not 7,500 RPM.
And that new WD Raptor 150GB drive is frickin sweet.
Jared, thanks for the catch on the drive speed. All fixed! Best, Kevin
has anyone else noticed that this new computer has four graphics cards, i thought sli only supports 2! well then if this is the case by christmas we should be seeing 10 pci-e x32 slots on a motherboard... and talk about masssive video memeory: 512mb x 4 is 2gig of video memory... bring on the future
I'd add some gold chains and a bitchin' camaro. Maybe some swarovski ice and a gold toof.
Just to complete the picture.
These will be on woot in a few months...
Doesn't matter what Dell does, a lot of people will always hate them. Not saying I'm one of them.
WoW thats crazy. This pc sure would look nice with that 30" lcd. But wow seriously who wants to spend around 5-7 grand on a pc that will probably be obselte in like 2-3 years. If Dell could overclock it to 5.0Ghz watercooled then I would defintely buy it.
p: )-
Joe,
It probably uses the new 7800GTX cards with two GPUs, SLI two of those and it's quad. It's like taking two dual-core processors and slapping it in a dual-processor motherboard.
I would never buy a pre-built... I don't think many of the kind of people who spend that kind of money on a computer would. That being said, you it has a lot of power but is really overpriced.
For one, if you are going to have the storage drives anyway, bring the cost down and only use the 74GB Raptor, all you need on the fast drive is your OS and games.
Second, offer some more case options and don't throw your logo all over the place Dell. I would like to see "third-party" (I guess) case suppliers to choose from.
Third, water cooling. Although, Dell seems to want to offer high-end machines to people who aren't nessecarily computer enthusiasists, it might not be too good of an idea if they aren't going to make it easy to manage. I'm sure they could engineer a very simple to use loop.
Finally, AMD arch is really better for games. I'm not biased, it is a simple fact. I would rather an X2 4400+ (equvilant to a 4.4GHz Intel CPU, and would be better than said Intel CPU at gaming).
Like others have said, an AMD processor (like the newly announced FX-60) and water cooling would go a long way in making this pre-built worth it.
As for more detailed specs on the graphics unit: http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=195 has the deets.
Basically, each card has two 7800 GTX GPU's and two PCB's linked together in a dual slot configuration that splits one PCIe16x slot into two 16x slots. The two dual cards then require two SLI bridges to complete the quad-SLI hookup.
I was looking to upgrade sooner, but it looks like I may just have to wait for these cards to go on sale to the public. Whenever that may be.
This one uses the 8xx chipset. The alienware uses the 9xx chipset. Could someone let me know if there is an advantage to the 9xx chipset? Are the intel chips truly 64 bit or are they some hybrid 32/64 bit?
Thanks
seriously, am I supposed to be all frightened and impressed at the same time by that paint job? It still looks like cheap walmart packaging. I remember when I was in 3rd grade and flames still impressed the hell out of me. The only flames that will impress me is when these things are burned en mass for costing way too much and pretty much sucking. If you really want to impress me, raise the bar so high that no one will be able to touch you for the next 5-10 years, how about 20 or 30 graphics cards, why not 60, and a 30tb hd. Don't buy dell, it only encourages them to build more junk. They doll out these cheap gimmicky upgrades in the hopes of attracting the gamers market, when already most of them know better. They just want to look like the Harley of the computer Bussiness.

It only has a GIG of RAM.
Is anyone else suprised?
I mean it has 2 gigs of VIDEO RAM.
Like many others have said - STICK A FRIGGIN' AMD PROCESSOR IN THERE, DELL!
This lovely idea of a computer is so nice, apart from Intel bringing down the party like an accountant talking shares at a batchelor party!
FX-60 looks very nice!
Oh, and if you want something nice for a good price, try out http://www.chillblast.com/product.php?productid=17257&cat=170&page=1 or maybe just check out the rest of chillblast for yourself - I have found them to be a top quality website!
Are those Mike Lavalle flames?
i like it, i dont see what some people dont like about dells, i would buy it.
although an AMD processor would be better
It'll look friggin' sweet with my Dell DJ plugged into it. I can't wait.
Bwahahaha!
Well, well ...well
What would I add to the mix....? Ok you ready because this one is a killer...
1. Factory Water-cooling for the CPU and all four GFX cards, but that's a no-brainer...
2. But here is the one that will kill you .... IF you want to really impress me... Contact John Carmack (Doom creator working on DOOM 3: Demonic Regions - for X360) and have him make an exclusive "DOOM 4 - Death before Dishonor" exclusively designed for this XPS beast... with things we have never seen in a game that only this machine and Carmack will be able to pull off, and while your at it add Quake 5 and Far-Cry 3 - Cry baby edition (you only wish you could survive)...And F2 - (fear 2)
And make it all exclusive and only for this Dell XPS - and you will see sales like dell never knew was possible.... lol. (Little kids will beg their parents to sell there house and get a smaller one just so they can afford this computer... "Mom really I don't need a bathroom in the next house Really I don't, -I'll just go to the Mobil gas station."
Add a flat panel HDTV 42 LCD monitor and Wireless mouse & keyboard with wireless X360 controller in black of course with full support for all games on the system. Add a joystick so when Im in flying games its just too amazing or in the chopper in BF2
And then give me a price point that is actually possible to obtain with in this little lifetime of mine. And then Dell you will have truly impressed me

Hmmm...$7000 for the ultimate gaming machine? Why not spend $499 for an xBox 360, $3-4000 for a decent plasma display, $1000 for a 5.1 sound system, and still have $2500 leftover to buy games? Who is Dell trying to market this to? What high-school/college kid gamers have $7000 to blow on a computer?
"Yes, mom and dad, I need it for school."
I would never want that after reading about their bloatwared non-supported infected crap software I read about over at hardocp.com
Good machines + bad support and software configuration
Add a 320x480 LCD display in the front panel, make it touch-sensitive, so you can boot the thing and use it (to some extent) without a hookup to an external monitor.
WinXP has dual-monitor support. Wouldn't you dig it if you could play Doom X on a 30" LCD while the case threw case temp, time, and a scrolling RSS feed on Jessica Simpson's whereabouts?

Still, they've got nothing on the airbrushed cases from falcon northwest... check out the gallery:

It's only going to be 512MB of effective video RAM if its running in SLI mode :)
found this on 11/11/05- gigabyte unleashes ga-8n-sli quad royal. 4 pci x16 slots, lga 775 D, up to 8gigs ddr2 ram. Indeed the above Hell pc is as overpriced as a fake babe ruth signed baseball. the pc i built not too long ago was about 2200 bucks, not too in detail:74g raptor,250g sata2,2 sli 7800 gt's,2gigs 400mhz xms,amd 64 4000 2.4,600w psu, asus a8nsli deluxe. i hate to post the score but in 3dm05 it got 10,885 at 2.4. if we could see what this thing could really do, then it probably still wouldnt be worth the money, the dell i mean. peace lovas
Apparently that isn't a paint job on the case: the case is translucent. The 4 G70 cores provide the eyecandy.
I don't know what's worse, Dell trying to make a hot rod or those of you on the board who actually know enough about (gag) computer gaming that you're actually hating on it, coherantly, too!
I think computer games should only be played by people who are nursing broken limbs or are suffering from a horrible muscular/ nervous disorder that leaves them bedridden. Cancer is good too.
Most of the kiddies I know who game are perfectly healthy, and they're smart but have no-brainer jobs. Talk about a complete WASTE on so many levels.
Stop compensating for your shitty Warehouse job by playing overly sophisticated TOYS!
Advice
1) Get a job that requires BRAINS and no I don't mean some paper pushing beancounter gig.
2) Use your physical strength and youth and DO SOMETHING ACTIVE. Skateboard. Learn how to shoot a rifle. Or god forbid PLAY A SPORT!!!!!!
If all your friends are nothing but lazy pothead gamers GET NEW FRIENDS in fact GET A GIRLFRIEND getting laid is more fun than "Badge of Honor 3" or whatever.
ventivent: The market for gamers is not high school and college kids. It's late 20s/early 30s. That's why everything is getting expensive. We've got more money, and they'd rather have us as clients than the younger crowd who can only extort so much from their parents.
If yo want to see pics of the cards close up, check out this link:
http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=195
(Found yesterday on Slashdot).
I'll buy one right now!!!!!!
This is the most crippled box i have ever seen. Regular 7800GTX x2 SLI boxes with a good AMD are cpu limited. Imagine this thing..
I guarantee if you dropped this to just 2 7800s your framerate would be the same. 1 Good cpu cant keep up with 2 cards. This is 1 bad cpu trying to keep up with 4.
And its still a dell. In the same shitty xps case you get for $2000
to bad its gonna be preinstalled with so much shit that is not even worth it
Yes because it's SOOOO hard to uninstall programs.
Freaking Dell hating whiners.
I don't think 5k-7k is expensive, I would buy one at this price range, and am not rich.
4x Geforce7800GTX at 512mb that alone is 2k+.
Building a system like this would cost much more then buying one from dell, everything they buy is at wholesales=cheaper prices then you could ever find becouse of mass orders.
1/4 Gamers have a HighEnd PC at 5k or more, Dell "renegade" will find love in today's market no matter what you guys think just like SLI did and DualCOre Processors even do Games are not ready for DualCore.
So, you will have a cool computer until just after a year and your warranty is up and then BOOM!! Magically your dell has a serious hardware problem and it costs more to fix it than to buy a new one. Then dell's pain in the butt tech support will waste hours of your time. Looks like a cool computer for a ridiculous price, but "DUDE DON'T GET A DELL"

I need a job first
Dude its a dell
nothing personal but
come on whos fooling who
yea the paints cool but whos going to spend 5000-7000
for ahigh end gaming machine if you do your foolish
hell you could probably get a comp setup for around
3000 - 4000 and would run twice as fast and look way cooler
DELL you logo sux that bieng said
id rather buy alienware you guys are know for bad tech support and poor cooling solutions .
Get with the game plan and
maybe id think about buying
a dell
Maybe if youd drop have the consumer junk that comes preinstalled and slows all your pcs to a crawl.
AMD Rots
I remember the 8200 I bought 2 years ago. I told the salesperson that I wanted it for gaming. I was VERY new to PC's. What did Dell send me? 1.8 Pent pro., ultra ATA HDD, PCI Nvidia 5200. Ok, I was new. Well, I wanted to upgrade to a much better machine,SATA raid and PCIe video, well I got another Dell. What an aggravation! 5 days and 18 hours later the PC still crashed on me. Dell was not going to pay for any software support. Well, I finally fixed it, I put the thing back into the box and sent it back! Will not buy another Dell! The support is useless!

Why would anyone waste their money on something like this when they could build something much faster for cheaper.
I say AMDx2 (dual core) is the future when it comes to processing. I used to think Intel was good, then I saw what AMD could do and I will never go back to Intel.
As for this Dell "computer". I thought I would never say this, but "When is too much, TOO MUCH!"
As long as I can build a fast reliable computer that plays games and does it what I need it to do, I am happy. 2 video cards and a AMD dual core processor would do just fine.
AMD= Doing more with less.
Intel= Wasting money on something AMD could do better.
I plan on ordering one :)
I think it's worth the investment.
oh well! it's nice to be rich
Like so many people have said before me, yeah I think the paint job on the case is impresive, but I don't see how it costs $5,000-$7,000...seems a little expensive when I think about it. I hope it has decent cooling without being water cooled or it will literally be on fire...
This looks really good cant wait till they come down in price. I find nothing wrong with Dell I have had a dell computer last 4-5 years and still going fine without any problems.
Everybody in the world knows that AMD processors are better on gaming. Anything else than that, they're practically equally matched in performance.
Oh, for the days when reasonably intelligent people used computers for reasonably intelligent purposes.
Want to play a game? Learn chess. Play chess.
Want to save the world? Put your time and money into reading, education, and learning to spell. Trade in your graphics for grammar.
Dell, do not sink to the level of least common denominator.
man we r all computer geeks and i'm not afraid to admit it
After all is said, I must agree with Dunkley the most. Get a chess board. On the Dell note, AMDs are better many aspects. I was a guinea pig for the early AMDs and well, had much difficulty. Now they have bettered themselves with a solid arch. Lose the logos Dell. It's like the car dealer that has to slap his logo on the car moments before you drive off the lot. If you have raw power inside, you want people to ask you about it and not read/memorize the specs off a site. "Hey whatcha got in there?" They obviously have a few wires crossed with 2gb/video to 1gb/main. My system is quite contrary to this and cost significantly less - still smokin any game I throw at it! 256/vid to 2gb/main w/1 64 bit cpu. Can't easily tell the difference between PC/PS2/XBox. True techies that love games aren't concerned with what's inside as much as how it really plays the latest cool looking games. If you see that game on a better system and it looks better, start coveting then. Liking movies as much as games, you people sound like those idiotic film critics that critique films based on lighting/sound/and various other idiosyncrasies. All the while they're missing the big picture/story/acting. Technically speaking, give me 2 quad boards clusterable - each with 4 dual core 64 bit cpus @ at least 3.5-4ghz each liquid N2 cooled, 4gb per cpu main/redundant mem, and 4 1gb cards that conform to every conceivable A/V output desired then cluster 'em together. Why use 32" monitor when you already have the most awesome home stereo system and big screen? I want those 2 to integrate seamlessly. Finally slap a 1tb drive per cpu @ at least 150mbps SATA @ at least 7xxx to 10xxx. Question then your motives for the life/speed ratio. Set aside a RAID server with 8tb, a power generator, and a cause!! (:->) For this price they better give me a sys with my name not dell, any color/style/design I concoct, and a personalized greeting each logon. Though I code, for this price I shouldn't have to. Now wake up.
BTW, all of this, if Moore's law is correct, will be avaliable in wristwatches in a number of years.
Dell is totally down for our awesome subculture! I want to buy many Dell products now! It has flames and everything! As a typical late teen/early 20's middle class gamer like yourselves, when I'm not skateboarding or eating hamburgers or cruising for babes, I like to know that I have the most cutting edge hardware that Dell has to offer at home for after my homework is done. Alienware is totally not "with it". They are a bunch of total squares. I mean, aliens? Aren't those dangerous to our tax economy?
Groovey, dudes!
Dell does have serious problems. It seems they are trying to fool the new people with their "services". Tech support is pretty horrible and they sell you a warrenty that's free for them. AMD processors are on top of Intel, no matter what others say...that's pretty much a know fact. Also, as previously stated, the CPU will be completely overworked and the machine will be obsolete in one - two years.
Personally, I prefer Alienware, though people say they are overpriced for their cases. Their tech support is pretty awesome and I love the Darkstar skin for XP. Chances are Alienware, Voodoo, Falcon NW, etc. will also make new "dream machines" for gamers.
My advice: Don't buy the dell, wait for the other companies offers, then compare them. Alienware even offers QUAD Samsung SyncMaster 320P 32" 8ms HDCP Ready Wide LCD monitors...at a price.
Any comments to Mirrorrorrim@gmail.com
Wow. A lot of crap for one machine.
Did you guys see the CPU heatsink? HUGE, almost fills the case.
What the hell were they thinking. I agree with all above, WATERCOOL!!!!!
In reply to #22. I read elsware that this PC has 4 gigs. 1 gig would be a waste.
Any info on the PSU or motherboard? Im guessing Dells own shitty mobo and PSU.
Wouldnt pay anything over $5K for this. Yes I would consider buying this prebuilt even with its Intel CPU.
I used to think like most of you, "I Freakin hate Dell" but you cant beatem so you might as well (you know it) JOIN them. More power to Dell for taking peoples hard earned money for a shitty systems. I would do the same and im sure if it ment MILLIONS all of you would do it to.
In the first 50 posts I didn't see anyone make the brilliant observation that the 4 cards are in pairs and that it's for dual-monitors. Which is going to be a waste, because very, very few games support dual screen. So what is the point of spending an extra $1400 on 2 more video cards that aren't going to do anything other then show your email while you surf porn or play a game?
You are all people with major problems in life. This is a very cool machine and your comments are sickening. Some one said you could buy a PC for 4 grand and get a machine that is 2 times faster. Yeah right ! My e-mail is cuk@024wifi.net and please send me what you could buy for 4000 $.
Stormofstarzz pulls out an anal prob and sticks it to Dell....seriously.......Alienware just kicks Dells butt all over the place! And the covers are way cooler, options better.
wow.........it looks good and sounds good but why would you spend 7 grand on it? you can build one like it yourself for maybe like......4-5 grand and i bet you it will run better then ur dell. but the case looks nice. i might buy it. just maybe....all depends on the amount of $$ i have 2 burn.
Ok, Why do you use an intel on something with high end gaming videocard? Get an AMD fx 60. I really don't think you need all that memory. I have 230 gigs in my comp and i am having touble filling it up. This seems WAY overpriced. Go to Newegg.com and look at the prices for the parts and no way will to be able to have a comp that costs over $5000 (it would also be much better then this one for 5k) that would even have a dual display set up. You guys didn't even say what sound card you got. You didn't say waht type of ram (and you got 512?!? THAT IS NOTHING!) I really find dell products to be a rip off. I build computers so I myself know about pricing, specs etc.. Dell please stop tricking the simple minded people (like old grandmothers) that know nothing about a computer.
It's not worth it. You're much better off building your own pc or finding someone who can build one for you. You'll save yourself ALOT of money.
Plus dell was never a high end gaming PC company, it just looks wrong having the dell logo on that thing. Alienware and voodoo's comptuers are 10X sexier and you can get them as powerful if not more powerful in some areas.
I think this computer is really cool. It's not a bad price either. If I had the money, I'd totally buy one.
It looks like more of an intermediate to advanced user type of computer. So if you are a basic computer user, then it's no wonder that you don't like Dells.
I JUST BOUGHT THE XPS 400 AND NOW THEY COME OUT WITH THE HOTEST PC AROUND :) lol.

Hpw about taking the Intel Processor and puting in an AMD...oh and also taking away the Dell badge...competing with alienware?...thats funny
Oh man, I can't stand Dell. I got a starter n00b box for 500 bucks or so and it wouldn't boot after... oh, a week or so. Dell then sends me a Windows reinstallation disk, which, obviously, cleared my hard drive of everything, and installed the most basic form of Windows imaginable. Of course, the formating of my hard drive cleared it of even the drivers, which Dell forgot to send again.
I wouldn't touch this flame box if you paid me. Dell is able to sell so cheap because they load them up with BS programs that slow down the computer. Now, it doesn't seem like that'd be an issue with this computer, but still. That Dell badge is there no matter what's inside.
lol Go Alienware! >.>
Hershal (post 37), your post was a ridiculous statement packed full of ignorant stereotypes. You want to poke fun at the people for reading these comments, yet you are doing so yourself. Also, playing computer games is just another entertaining thing to waste our time and help us relax... much like watching television or listening to music. I'm sure you watch some tv, yet you aren't beraded by random strangers for "wasting" your life or having a mediocre job and a lazy disposition.
Also, I know several "gamers" with social lives, significant others, wonderful jobs, beautiful children, and athletic talent. Maybe you should think for yourself a bit and refrain from cutting down others because they aren't just like you.
Why in the world would you spend 4-7 grand on a computer when the only people nerdy enough to buy them are probably smart enough to build their own, for half the price? So when is Microsoft and Dell going to merge to take over the world?
i think its decent at best and Is worth my comment yeah paint is ok 4 GPU's with a shitty CPU = POS! dell sucks im on a p4 2.8 512ram and a nvid 5500 and got it at 1000 $ from dell yeah.. what a f*ckin rip though anyways this comp is OK
The Dell XPS is indeed a top notch CONSUMER product. But NVIDIA's GeForce 7800 SLI cards still havin nothing against radeon's 9800 pro overclocked. I mean you can build a substantially better CPU with $3,ooo.
I mean with 3 grand you can build a CPU with an AMD 64 bit processor with an ASUS K&V delux edition motherboard. A 8,000RPM 200GB drive. A slamming Radeon 9800 graphics card, a creative labs SOUND BLASTER 5.1 sound card with a creative labs 7.1 digital surround sound sustem and to pull it all together 2 25 inch touch screen monitors. You can also buy a sustom painted case that looks even better than the flame job the XPS has. when i bought all this it costed around 7,000. The CPU unit itself costed 6,000. It's a kick ass system and i think that if your going to spend 7,000 on a CPU, you might as well do it right.
that is a awsome system not much more you could add
i think that Dells suck ass. i rather the brand new Alienware Aurora ALX for gods sake. That friggin case looks so much tighter than the dell and it probably performs better too.
to see it copy and paste into ie: http://alienware.com/product_detail_pages/Aurora_ALX/alx_features.aspx?SysCode=BUNDLE-AURORA-ALX&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT
ehh, it looks kool and all but yea, its just a Dell. I would probably rather go with Northwest Falcon.
this is some sad stuff.....Dell making a gaming computer....for people already buying Dells they have no idea what a "good" or "decent" computer is even at my school our gay dell computers are screwing up with their soundcards etc...if a person wants a gaming computer theyd make it them selves....There is no point in having 4 Graphics cards the PowerSupply would need to be like a gigawatt to run all that and the fans and the hard drives and the cdrom drives and for a gaming computer id Suggest AMD 64 FX or a AMD 64bit processing unit cuz Intel sucks on that AMD 64 + windows pro x64 = Gaming OS in most computers there would be no reason for the 4 cards my system I have right now has 4 gigs of ram 2 SLI cards and a 1.8 AMD 64 in it im fine with everything My computer > any dell any day anytime anywhere and 4.2 ghz is overrated my god who needs something that fast 1.8 gets the job done and with all my ram theres no need for it
uhh....well i would remove windows durrh
Looks like something i would buy. Only if i had that much money, but i guess it doesn't hurt to dream
ummm i like how it looks because im really into dragons and flame stuff so thats cool but why cant it be a different color of flames like blue or purple ya know sumthing that looks badass, and as far as the price 5-7 thousand is outrageous ive already got sum1 that told me that they could make me a better comp than that and they would only make me pay $500 dollars, whoever buys that are getting ripped off...
yea u all must be really big geeks cuz i dont even kno or care about half the stuff ur talkin about just as long as the computer runs good and doesnt blow up lyk it looks lyk its about 2 do now
somehow people are not satisfied when you apply a lot of effort for someone else's pleasure.
I just wish that you can sell it as much as possible.
DELL RULES !!!
Jees, I've never seen so much hatred for a company.
This machine is ltd edition and you know it will be gone in 5 seconds flat, so what's point of bitching about Dell.
It's the 1st ever quad gpu pc out and it's done specifically to drive their new 30" monitor for ultimate gaming experience (for the people that can afford it). I don't see Alienware's quad gpu / 30" panel options anywhere. Also regarding Alienware, here in the u.k their prices are absolutely astronomical. I know plenty of computer savvy gamers with Dell's, I don't know anyone with an Alienware!
Ok they should use AMD but they already recognise that and will probably start shipping with AMD's soon. At least they should be praised for overclocking the intel to 4.2ghz (dell overclocking - wot!).
Don't get me wrong I couldn't care less but I think they deserve some credit for pushing technology forward. If I had 7k, I'd snap their hands off for one of them muvvers with the 30" screen.
