Simple solution:
1) Keep Windows Update on auto-download/install.
2) Keep your virus defs up to date.
3) Use a Standard User account for everyday work. Log in to the Local Administrator account only when installing software.
Point (3) is key, and it's what all Unix/Linux/Mac default setups use (e.g., "sudo"). It's also what all corporate IT departments do now - they lock down their users' Windows desktops so they can't inadvertently infect their own systems and use remote-management software for maintaining them. I know - this is what I do for a living.
Our Mac guy, on the other hand, is freaking out because he has to manually update our Macs whenever Apple releases a point-upgrade. Granted, he uses remote-control SW - but it's still a manual process. For our PCs we automatically push out updates to thousands overnight.
