Polaroid unveils 80GB PMP, portable gaming console

Polaroid seems to be branching out even farther from their traditional instant-but-washed-out photography model (they already sell all kinds of CE gear that tends to fly below the radar), as they were showing off yet two more non-imaging devices at CES. The first was an 80GB PMP with a nice-looking widescreen display that will supposedly be available in the fall for $600. Even more curious was some sort of PSP-like portable gaming console that may not be destined for the States judging by the non-English characters on its screen. Whatever regions are getting this will see it in August, although neither price nor other minor deets (processor, graphics, resolution, titles, networking capabilities, PMP features, etc.) were available. You can peep this mystery machine after the break.

Actually the "old" Polaroid that most people know doesn't make any of the CE stuff. They've basically turned into a shell that licenses the Polaroid name to a variety of different companies.

Growing up my Dad and Mom worked @ Polaroid. Talk about a company with no vision. They thought the LandCam (Camcorder) was a bad idea. They missed the boat on so much and in the late 90's came up with a flashlight that was supposed to be the savior of the company. Ya right before they all but closed their doors. Who ever it was that ended up with the shell of a company should drop the name "Polaroid" all together.

I think what w're seeing here may be Polaroid licensing their name, like Bell & Howell and some others do.

Reminds me of the Lyra RD2780 which was a brick. PoS and lousy battery life and this looks like a carbon copy of it.

Top one looks like the DVX-Pod. Maybe it's back from the dead with a new hard drive.

Hmmm.. is it just me or does that look very xbox-y?
If that thing is running a mobile version of windows then who said MS werentt entering the handheld market?

Well.. Good for Polaroid to explore new thing, might be their best new weapon. As in some old folks say "You never try you never know, if you don't try, chances of getting popular are 0%, if you try chances are 0.1% ++ " .

I just can't imagine this PSP-box having a battery life of more than 10 minutes.

This is a good thing; and I'm sure we're going to be seeing a lot more of this sort of product. And why not? It's got video; a nice big screen; a third more GB than the closest ipod; and it can play good old free roms. The idea is great, but I have to admit I'd have a hard time forking over $600 to "polaroid". Or rca, or nexxt (or whatever), or tandy... It just isn't a trustworthy brand imo. And polaroid might want to tweak the design a bit. Gamepark's got exactly the right idea with the gp2x. Now if that thing had 80 gigs, well then I would have to go buy one.
