Actiontec has announced a new
product/service bundle called VoSKY Call Center which allows users to make
Skype and SkypeOut calls on their mobiles by routing them through
their home or work PC. The Call Center peripheral attaches to both a PC and landline and uses voice prompts on the
remote end to control Skype features on the PC. One nice touch is the callback feature that notifies you when a
previously offline Skype buddy signs in. Besides the consumer angle, the service is also being targeted at Internet
cafes in broadband-sparse regions where locals could route VoIP calls through the cafe's connection for yet another
fee. Remote Skype goodness is available now for $70, plus regular broadband, cellular, SkypeIn, and SkypeOut fees.

I thought the whole point behind Skype and similar services was to make and receive calls for almost free??? Now there going to route calls to and from your cellphone that you pay for by the minute???

at #1: I don't think this is targeted at the "Yo man whassup tonite" audience. For guys like me (who suddenly find themselves in intercontinental relationships) being able to call their girlfriends from pretty much anywhere for a reasonable price is a BIG DEAL. I don't mind the few extra cents.

Wouldn't it just be easier for the person residing outside the country (i.e, US) to get SkypeIN domestic US number? That way, if you have domestic free calling anywhere in the US via your cellphone service, you could just make a domestic call to the SkypeIn number? Furthermore, with unlimited nights and weekends offered by many wireless carriers this could be even more useful...
btw...the yearly SkypeIn subscription is only 30 Euros or about $36 USD...

They're a bit misleading in their claim of being the first mobile skype solution. http://www.ipdrum.com was out in September of last year. The nice angle about ipdrum is that you add a line to your family plan, connect that mobile to your computer, and then you make free skype calls to and from your cell, because on your family plan, calls between your phones are free. You also don't need to be tied to a call center. Pricing is about the same as VoSKY.

With IPdrum (http://www.ipdrum.com) you can also synchronize your contact list with your cell. This means that you can store your IPdrum/Skype contact as you stor an ordinary contact in your cellphone. This beats any similar solutions.

Most cell plans allow for free calls to your home phone.Basically, you're not charged for calls from your cell to your home number and thus you can make (almost) free calls to anywhere.

There is just a little problem with IPdrum but it is hidden very well in the skype FAQ:
Can I change Skype accounts on my PC while using Mobile Skype Cable?
The Mobile Skype Cable is locked to one Skype account, so if you change Skype account you won't be able to use the Mobile Skype Cable anymore.
Nice eh ??!!
