Why is it pointless? It's great to protect yourself for verbal contracts and such. As long as one of the parties knows about the recording device, it's also perfectly legal.
My concern would be how this thing can be aimed. You don't want to use it and end up with a continuous shot of a guy's chest (where you want to show his face).
