We're still digging through gigs of CES photographs when we happened upon one rather juicy bit we
thought we might share. We found this little number over at the Blu-ray booth -- which, given the circumstances, we can
only assume was paid for and set up at least in large part by Sony. Yes, you're reading that placard right (we had to
zoom in from another angle since the lighting made it hard to catch a decent shot). Is it true? Is the
Sony PlayStation
3 that we've all
now come to know and love
(or not) merely a "conceptual design?" Because if it is they must be further behind than we originally
anticipated.

Heres a pic from CES with the controller in the display. The conceptual design tag is infront of the controller, so who knows.

I don't mind the PS3 design. I like the slot-loading drive, the touch-sensitive buttons, and how the silver trim nicely compliments the PSP.
Things I do hope change:
The logo. Come on, guys, we know Spider-Man saved your ass financially, but do you really need to use the Spider-Font for the PS3?
The color. Of the three colors Sony showed at E3 2005, silver was my least favorite - and it's the foremost launch candidate, apparently. White and black would look so much better (Sony apparently doesn't know that white is the new silver is the new black when it comes to electronics) so why not give us all three launch colors?
The controller. I'm reserving judgement until I actually hold the damn thing, but the PS3 controller really seems like a case of fixing what ain't broke to me. They didn't change any buttons. At all. They didn't even add a console power button. :-(
But seriously, some fanboys here are annoying. The PS3 does have vents, it won't cost $750, and whether or not a poster's girlfriend is visually pleasing has NOTHING to do with the conversation. :-)
The people here who seriously think that Sony would sell the PS3 at over $500 are morons. Sony may be stupid with rootkits, etc. but they aren't THAT stupid. I wouldn't be suprised if they sell the ps3 at $400. And those of you who keep bringing up the 1800 blu-ray player...it's an ELITE. It's an overpriced "ELITE" player. it probably costs 200 dollars to make and they are going to make $1600 profit on each of them. Before anyone calls me a fanboy, I am not. I am simply stating facts.

There is so little going for the PS3 right now, that's for sure.
Even the Revolution has more solid price details, and its controller, while being a prototype, is pretty much final. The system actually seems feasible, whereas the PS3 is boasting better graphics than the Xbox 360 with only one small cooling vent and no fans.
There isn't even any playable game footage that surpasses the Xbox 360 in graphical quality (there is pre-rendered and demo footage that looks better, but it's running on $10,000 alpha kits)
I think the PS3 won't be so bad, but don't expect it this spring like you all think it will. All of the final details would be released by now, along with a near-complete list of launch games. This hasn't even been announced in Japan yet.
Just because its a concept design, doesn't mean sony is behind, it just means that they COULD change it. Plus, its just the outside that looks different, the inside is still the cell processor we've all come to love!
Everyone should face the facts that companies may change their product design and functions. Considering the PS3 has a lot to show for, Sony will perfect it as they see fit. (Whether or not it's to our liking is a different story.) Just accept that what you see know may not be what you see when it rolls off the production line.. and not just for the PS3, for everything else out there.
You guys can bash PS3 as much as you want, but let me just say that I have a prototype in my lab right now with all of the finalized hardware in it, and it is a truly awesome sight to behold.
I have no idea what the final case will look like, since this one is just a huge ugly board, but watching the Unreal 3 engine demo on a 1080p panel in all its glory almost brings a tear to my eye.
Hate as much as you want, it's going to be a very capable system, and while I can't say anything about release dates, you won't have to wait that much longer.
All of you doomsayers really have no idea, in a few months you'll be a PS3 fan too, it is truly that good.
Japanese uses an English loan-word "image", イメージ, when in English we might use diagram, conceptual layout, representation or other slight variations depending on the situation. My bet is that the label started its life as イメージ and some poor translator made the wrong guess when trying to find the right English match.
I really don't care about how a console looks or whatever. My friends who some are pro xbox say that the ps3 sucks because the didnt come up with a cool name. It doesn't matter what a console looks like or what its name is.
I think it says conceptual design just because it might change some. I would think they're somewhat confident that thats going to be they're general design of the console but there might be the slight alteration for whatever reason. I don't understand whats wrong with the bommerang controller. Sure, it looks like a piece of crap, but it'd seem perfectly confotable and all to me.
Some real lamerz in here. Everyone is just angry because they won't have PS3 until 2007. Also, I can only HOPE that this isn't the final design, bcause it's weak as hell.
I like it how it is, its slick and modern. But there's always room for improvement. It looks less bulky than the earlier photographs. Hope they deliver on their performance promises.
hmm.. maybe Sony was thinking just this when they threw that on there.

back to the topic... with the price of Blu-Ray players being so high, one can't help but be pessimistic about the PS3's price.
Dudes...fonts? Grill? What the hell does it matter what font they use on the console? Ridiculous...
As long as its a gaming improvement over the PS2, the games can carry over, and the controller isn't a shoebox like the XBOX monstrosity, I could care less what color the PS3 is...
It isn't a painting guys. You don't hang it on the wall of your dusty rose colored bathroom.

Someone mentioned this way up above somewhere, but I'm sure the conceptual design has a rounded top to actually prevent stacking. Stacking consoles like this is a great way to prevent them from getting proper airflow. This was a large problem with a lot of PS2's (which was completely flat on top). Curving the top is actually a very smart move. You should think things through before you start bashing. These engineers for the multi-billion dollar companies aren't all that stupid...
They've been saying "Conceptual Design" and "Subject to Change" all the time, in interviews, everything. They have also said that the design will *probably* be like that. No big news. Estimated price is $400-$500.

Sony just got scared when they knew that microsoft's xbox 360 was coming soon so they just made up there PS3 so that they wouldn't look stupid and slow.
They have to redesign it. Just now it looks awful.
This "conceptual" design was yet another means for Sony to steal some PR thunder... They've made a habit out of it. Who cares if it's not final, as long as people are talking about the PS3. Heck, this little sign is generating PR for them.
I am malin research on "hash-hash" marketing, soon I will publish results. Main points of research are so colled "leaks", stories, buzz, fake info who is fabricating it and why.
It is hard to find evidents but when you put alot of examples on one place everything becomes clear who do it and why.
i think it's all a trick and that the PS3 is in production now. The lack of information and smoke screens are just to mess with microsoft and friends.
I think they just mean the design of the case. It may not look precisely like this when finally released, but I'm sure they've got "nude" hardware lying around the development offices, or maybe they're just stuffing it into wooden boxes at this point.
Give it a rest already. Spring 2006 Launch. That's what's Sony's said all along. 4 months until E3 2006. 4 months you could be spending playing games with a bunch of great games coming out between now and then. If at E3 Sony drops their pants with nothin to show then I'll pay some mind to these wild baseless unreliable spouts of fanboy vs fanboy. Oh the chip yields ! O the dev kits ! O the hardware debugging ! My mothers cousins dogs grandmother says the ps3 is a bitch to develop for! My cat designs assets for ps3 games and boy can he tell you they dont look any better than xbox 360! Its all very interesting maybe they'll come out with a "making of" video after the release. There's some good books out there about the development of the original Xbox. There's other more reliable sources of gaming news out there that dont post everything that comes their way. In the meantime I'm exploring the new (for me) territory of PC gaming.

You know, i dont really care what it looks like or how long i have to wait for it. Im a die hard sony fan, and though i dont like waiting, i will be happy to as long as i get a beautifull and WORKING machine, and an butt load of games too.
I personally like the current design of the PS3, but i hate the controllers design, which, i hope to god, isnt final.
As far as it being pushed back to the holiday season goes, i think that is the best thing for sony, and consumes. They will probably have a working computer by the end of sping/early summer, but wont realease it to the public. They will test is streuosly, and then hopefully they will release it with a whole bunch new title in Dec of '06, and they will already have many maufactured so they wont run into the "problem" Microsoft did of being out of stock, but they will regulate the flow to keep a certain number of back ups and to make sure the system dosnt just get on good sale and then dies out because consumer demand drops.
Once the Blue-ray specifications are finalized and Blue ray players are out in the market, you will see the PS3 out on the market. The first players are to be introduced in March- April time frame. So we'll probably see the PS3 around June.

I heard a comment by the CEO of Harley-Davidson motorcycles,(it was the kid of the founder, now pres, I guess), anyway someone was trying to get him to say something negative about import bikes and all he said was (+/-) "Hey, at least we're all on 2 wheels." This was a very diplomatic response but also gets to the heart of the US vs. Import bike issue - it's all about biking.
So it's sad to see everyone dogging PS3, XBox360, or any platform. it's a personal attack on someones idea of what hardware should look like or how it should perform and it's always delivered with as much vitriol as possible . Games are often released for all platforms so we should be focusing our energy on the gaming companies. They have seen how lucrative it is to release for 3 or 4 platforms simultaneously and I don't think there will be much incentive to do otherwise.
It's all about the games. Gamers redeem yourselves, UNITE!

Sony display a sign saying it's a conceptual design. How does that then translate into a launch delay? Has it occured to no-one that this could all be a clever ploy on the part of Sony to throw people off track and allow them to reveal something more spectacular at launch time?

Hey all guys U know what I think that Sony can't be that foolish to give us all hopes for the playstation 3 release in spring and then change the dates when the Xbox360 is already out ,and playstation 3 will have great competition when its released coz right now Xbox360 is being sold like hot cakes.So it might be a really big n nice surprise from Sony,So hold on all.
It would be easier to re-do a persons face than to re-do there brain, waht im saying is I'm guessing they have the hardware alreayd, at least most of everything to get it to release soon, but they may not have the case ready, but its alot easier to design a new case for the ps3 than to design new hardware, am I right?

PLEASE READ: Ok, the font that says "playstation 3" is the spiderman 2 font. When the psp was first shown playing movies, it played spiderman 2. The movie that came with my psp was spiderman 2. I bet that whenever they show this thing playing movies, it will be playing spiderman 2. Actually spiderman 3 because this sure isnt coming out anytime soon.
I think this whole thing is a gigantic game of phone tag. There are alot of rumors and everything but where is sony on telling us something. I guess we will just have to wait and see. Personaly I'm buying the PS3 period, no matter what. I hope that it will come out in white or black though.
