Is this the Canon EOS 30D?
The fuzzy
image above appeared recently on the Chinese digicam fan site DCHome.net, raising suspicions that it could be Canon's
EOS 30D, the successor to the 20D. While some Canon enthusiasts think it looks real enough, others are more
circumspect, pointing out the fact that everything after the "3" is covered in the photo, and that the camera
bears at least a passing resemblance to the 350D (which is a little confusing consider the 350D's dial is on the right
side of the body, not the left). This isn't the first time alleged
30D pics have shown up online, so we'll take this one with a grain of film, and keep our eyes open for more
conclusive info.

Japanese site, not Chinese, right? At least Babelfish translated to english from japanese for that page. Cheers.
popagandhi @ Jan 17th 2006 11:35AM
That's a Chinese site. It should be because I can read it. It looks too small to be the 30D.
Chase Houston @ Jan 17th 2006 11:43AM
Check out the spacing of the characters under the 'EOS', the '3' is the same size as the 'E' meaning, maybe, just maybe, there are only 3 characters under the 350, making it enough space to say 30D not 350D....but hey, rumors and dreams don't really mix well =)
James Barnes @ Jan 17th 2006 11:55AM
the features are very similar to my 10D (dial on the left, flash button, aperture close down etc) except that the 10D label is on the other side of the lens and there's not enough flat surface on the 10D to put a label where one is shown on the picture. I reckon it's a mash-up.
apeguero @ Jan 17th 2006 12:10PM
Looks like a smaller 20D. That would be really nice if they did develop a smaller 20D with same quality build materials, 8 or more megapixels, 2" to 2.5" LCD, same or better electronics as the 20D and label it a 30D.
Adam @ Jan 17th 2006 12:25PM
If it was real, it wouldn't be called the 30D. People would confuse it with the D30.
daevh @ Jan 17th 2006 12:53PM
Just held my 20D up at the same angle as the camera pictured above. It's identical apart from the 350D style control dial (with the shiny silver chamfer on it), the lack of the word 'DIGITAL' near the FOV preview button (which where it should be i'm sure i can see a slight difference in colour/amount of noise) and that the EOS name tab (the bit blanked out) is a little lower than on the 20D.
Won't be long till they anounce it or not though...
GeeksAreSexy @ Jan 17th 2006 12:56PM
Hmm, this looks like a photoshop case.. Anyone could add this to the picture.. who knows, maybe it's the real stuff!
I'd love to get one of these, unfortunatly, its price doest really fit in my budget.
Jamie @ Jan 17th 2006 1:03PM
A minor point about the second link: it shows an actual, production D30, not an alleged 30d. The D30 was Canon's first prosumer dSLR. You can tell by the big white light on the left side of the lens -- that's the old-style AF assist lamp.
I don't know why that picture is being used to illustrate a story about a camera that may or may not be forthcoming

"and that the camera bears at least a passing resemblance to the 350D"
It ain't a 350D Photoshop job. Everything about it is different. See here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonEOS350D/Images/NewFeatures/bodycolors.jpg
Different body shape, different name badge, different pop-up flash housing, different side for the main dial, different strap clasp, different input door cover... I mean everything.
Could be Photoshopped from something else, but not a 350D. There are lots of camera that look more like this (in a way that would be easier to Photoshop, anyway) than the 350D. You're talking a complete makeover to turn the 350D into the photo at the top here.
modenadude @ Jan 17th 2006 3:21PM
That looks like it has an EF lens on it, if it's a brand new camera, wouldn't they be showing it with the newer (since 20d) EF-S? Just a thought....
Pip @ Jan 17th 2006 3:26PM
That camera looks more like a 5D than anything else.
Being smaller and lighter would make sense, as thats the direction all the dSLRs are going.
Also, the leses we're seeing there probably cost more than the camera pictured.
Ocellnuri @ Jan 17th 2006 4:31PM
Yeah, anyone with the connections to get ahold of a pre-production 30D would most-deff be using L-glass, not EF-S lenses.
naz @ Jan 17th 2006 4:46PM
Comment 11: it has an onboard flash, so it is more like the 20D than the 5D. it has very simila design aspects to the 20D (look at the flash, rubber cover over the usb connector, etc.). The design aspects dont really match up w/ the 3xxD series, so at the very least, its is a photoshopped 20D. I have worked closely w/ various canon dslrs over the past few years, so i am very familiar with those aspects.
on a side not, 30D would be a HORRIBLE name, becasue it would cause confusion w/ the previous D30.
Jeff @ Jan 17th 2006 5:16PM
Could it be the rumored 3000D?
Bob Mac @ Jan 17th 2006 6:49PM
Looks funny. The lens behind it is sharper and depth of field can't explain the discrepancy. Maybe this is a Photoshop job and the main subject was made fuzzy to cover up the imperfections of the manipulated image.
Patrick Emmons @ Jan 17th 2006 7:11PM
Who the hell cares? The body doesn't really matter, its the lenses and the freaking talent that does. I have a 20d and the photos are great, the sharpness comes from fast L glass, not the "latest" body on the market. I want a 5d only because of the full frame benefits, autofocus improvements and 2.5" screen. I could care less about megapixels and shit like that.
John @ Jan 17th 2006 9:44PM
>>6. If it was real, it wouldn't be called the 30D. People would confuse it with the D30.
John @ Jan 17th 2006 9:46PM
Exactly what I was thinking.
Max Fun @ Jan 18th 2006 6:56AM
A lot of people are excited that the attached lens shows a 85mm f/1.2 L II. The 85mm lens is possibly the most spectacular portrait lens for 35mm photography, but it was getting old with slow AF, so the mark II version of the lens is very exciting news.
Lek @ Jan 24th 2006 9:52AM
Might as well be 3000D, three small 0's, perhaps :)
It looks small and plasticky...but why would anyone attach a new L lens to 3000D?
Hmmmm

Last week I managed to get a polaroid from a shoot for an advertisement in Holland showing the canon eos 30d. It's bound to come out soon, for sure.
