Flexible OLED display prototype demonstrated

The field of thin, rollable displays just got a little more crowded with the demonstration of a flexible OLED display by Universal Display Corp. According to the company, its 4-inch prototype display is based on flexible metal foil and is just 0.1mm thick; a comparable glass display would be at least 1 mm. The display is capable of displaying full motion video at a resolution of 100 dpi. Universal Display's research has been funded in part by the US Department of Defense, and prototype displays have been provided to military research labs.

This is pretty neat, one day it will probably replace newspapers. I can just imagine my self walking to the train stoping by the deli and downloading new content real quick, then read it all on the train.

Anyone remember the show Earth : Final Conflict? They these little phone/pda/computer/video camera thing with a roll out display. Kind of looks like the Phillips e-ink rollable thing..I think it's phillips. Anyway, as with all new tech gadgets and stuff, I don't care about it till it gets into my hands.

Forget that. Forget the huge laptop. Ad this with the Laser keyboard and you have a 8oz to 16 ounce laptop. Even make the keyboard roll out.

Or even better, an ipod that will allow you to have a bigger screen Just slide it out.

Pull down dvd screens in the car. 42 inch or larger pulldown on the van wall. Big Pimpin all the way. How soon till this is in PIMP MY RIDE.

Or add this to a GPS to allow you to have a bigger map.

All inclusive phone, Pull out screen, MP3, computer, wireless capabilities , etc, etc, etc, etc

Cool concept and I would like to see this in the real world. Of course, there are way too may what ifs with this type of product.

What doesn't it have to do with national defence? There are lots of places the military could use displays like this. Just off the top of my head, they could replace paper maps with these and throw in features like real-time GPS plotting, zooming, etc.

thinner, lighter, is all nice. but i think what would be a more important factor, which would either make or break this technology is how durable it is.

thin and light as hell isnt great if scratching it a little bit gives you streaks reminicent of broken lcd's (or #14's underwear)
but if it is in fact rather durable, this would be pretty friggin sweet.

you could thumbtack your monitor to the wall.

and yeah earth final conflict. yeah that shit is hot. and oh yeah, send your uncle captain kirk my regards.
