TiVo Super Bowl stats: people actually watched the game
TiVo has released its annual
ranking of Super Bowl viewer
data (you know, the stuff they compile by spying on everything you do), and for the first time, more viewers
replayed parts of the game than the commercials. According to TiVo, the Steelers' "gadget play" touchdown
beat out all of the commercials for viewership. Meanwhile, despite tons of pre-game hype, Jessica Simpson's steamy
Pizza Hut commercial didn't even rank in the Top 10, which was led by Ameriquest's two spots, and also included Leonard
Nimoy's Aleve ad and four spots from Anheuser-Busch.

who cares about the super bowl
Well, the commercials this year were a big disappointment. It seems like the era of creating "special" Super Bowl ads is basically gone... nowadays almost every ad even during regular shows is pretty big budget, and all the Super Bowl ads end up just getting shown all the time afterwards anyway. I think people are getting wise; it's been the trend for the past few years now.
I'm kinda surprised at the ratings the game itself got, though... two smaller-market teams and the game was pretty sloppy all around. I actually fell asleep at one point.
Ummm so this is last years data on the graphs and on the linked page. where is this years data??
I'm sure that must be a composite effect of the ads not being spectacular, and the fact that some of the calls the refs made were inexcusably egregious. So most of the 'instant replay' was given to some of the yellow flags.
I think the best was the Full Throttle commercial before the game. Watching hundreds of real/CGI vehicles rip through a neighborhood was pretty cool I thought.
I miss the Bud Bowl
Full Throttle? What is that? Oh, you mean the fake Red Bull that comes in a too-large sized can? Meh, I'll stick with the original...
The ad budgets for TV are disapearing. Going into more profitable mediums i guess. Gone are the days where we see comercials like the Etrade one with the monkey in a semi truck claping hi hands.
Oh how I miss those Dot com dollars...
I actually thought the commercials were a lot better than last year - mainly because of the two ameriquest spots. Hilarious. the game, however, sucked. i think it was rigged (although i was rooting for the steelers anyways)
Wasn't the ad price something like $83k/second?
You'd think they'd use better commercials if they are gonna be slapping down that kind of change per second.
One of my top favs was the pony pulling the Bud wagon.
The worst one was the Burger King commercial with the 2.5 million dollar budget. A bunch of people dressed up as parts of a burger does not make me want to eat burgerking
actually the superbowl commercials are the cheapest way to advertise per viewer...i think it breaks down to be like 27 dollars per 1000 viewers...which is actually a STEAL for a corporation...guess those advertising classes are payin off after all..and 2 mill for a 30 sec spot isnt really bad for these humongoid companies anyway...and if im not mistaken..this was the 2nd most watched event on tv EVER with 141 mill viewers...the # 1 spot goes to the final episode of mash...lol...
Well count me as one not counted by Tivo. Since I can only get ABC in high def through my terrestrial antenna (even if it is only 720p), I wasn't watching it on my Tivo.
I have a couple wishes though:
1. High def network feeds through DirecTV. (I ain't paying $11 bucks a month on top of my current subscription w/o getting the networks.)
2. ABC feeds in 1080i. (C'mon, I can even get PBS in 1080i...)
3. Never again seeing the Stones "live."
By the way, I liked the Bud Light Magic Fridge best.
You are kidding me. I think you all missed the streaking sheep.
I think the advertizers have realized that they created their own high prices for Superbowl ads by getting us all hooked on a steady diet of Wowzer ads.
Now they are curing the problem by putting on such pathetic ads that companies like TiVO will provide the data to prove they shouldn't be paying so much.
But you know, it will be nice to be able to get up and nuke some more nacho dip during the commercials again. Let 'em keep sucking I say! :-)
