Looks ok, wont beat the PSP in my league though, lol, I think a lot of fanboys will be deeply annoyed they've got the old ones. lol. :)
Looks cheaper than I thought it would, but better than the last one looks.
I agree.. It certainly won't beat the PSP in terms of design, but it'll be slim enough to shed away that whole "bulky" image.
Finally! I was astonished by the first one. I didn't think Nintendo could make such an ugly thing in this day and age. Just a glance at the headphone/volume side of the device shows that they've redeemed themselves.
Mario Kart, here I come!
ALRIGHT!!! an even smaller birth control carrying case... lol
i was hoping the buttons would be transparent like.
Don't want to bring down the wrath of the fanboys, but I had this deep urge to sputter this out...
Looks a lot like a baby iBook. =)
is it me or does it look like really cheap and nasty plasitc? or even a little bit grubby? Assuming it isnt actually grubby
When is DSpeak coming out? That's all I want.
I don't know about you, but it looks kind of dirty? What's with the off-white color? On last picture on the bottom shows about 3 different shades of white for different parts of the device. Man I hope that gets fixed before they release this sucker.
Sexy.
Some things i'm curious about...
The hinge - the DS hinge automatically snaps to a few locations. This one looks like it can go to any angle you like. confirm on this?
wireless reception - I live in a fairly big house and my room is a good ways away from the access point. My iBook receives the signal just fine, but I can't say the same for my DS. Better or worse on this one?
GBA slot - looks like there's some kind of placeholder in the GBA slot in these pictures. Is that just to preserve its look? is that going to be included with the DSL?
the buttons - are they bigger? or do they just look bigger because the DSL is smaller?
-Kevin
I want it in black.
Sexy.
I especially like the horizontal stylus-holder on the back, which oddly, nobody has pointed out yet.
Where's the power button?...
Wow . . . chitzy. Is it really that off-white milky color? It lookes like aged, cheap plastic.
The trim around the screen looks to be poorly fit and they still have those sloppy-looking square fillers by where they screw the top together.
My current gen seems fine still.
Hmm, can't find the power button? Am I just blind?
is it just me, or do the colors seems to change? i mean look at the pic with the front and back- what gives?
Thos are some pretty bad pictures. Unlike the glamour shots were use to seeing from an unreleased Nintendo product.
Where did the pics come from?
Well, I'm actually not that impressed anymore. The conceptual design looked a lot nicer.
i hope everyone realizes these are really bad photos of the DS Lite. Bad lighting, bad paint job. it's obviously still a test/prototype version. Or at the very least the photos look like they were taken with a cell phone camera while it was sitting on a lab bench somewhere.
the DS Lite will look slick with a nice glossy shiny white paint job when if you buy one, i promise. man, these pics are terrible.
On the back theres a label that says slot2 and above it theres what seems to be a plastic cover for something, any idea what that is? also, where is the stylus stored?
the place where theres a white cover is where the gba games go and there is a slot at back for the styles
Also looks like the charger socket on top is different; is _could_ conceivably (hopefully!) be a USB mini-A socket...
Kevin:
According to the announcements, all the insides will be the same, so no on the expanded WiFi range.
GBA slot is definitely still in. What you see there is a "plug" included with the Lite that goes into the front to preserve the smooth look.
I can't imagine the hinge would be changed, but there hasn't been any official info about it.
And finally, to some previous posters: Obviously, the lighting of the pictures isn't perfect. Don't expect the real units in yellowy plastic. I'll bet these will look quite nice.
i'm wondering if they could make it even thinner/smaller if they got rid of the GBA support...
New charging connector? Booooo. Now I can't use my USB charger. Also... looks nice. Look how thin the bitch is! If you use the DS card slot as a comparison... it looks to be only about 70% as thick o_O.
Why is the "Nintendo" sticker on the back backwards while the "Nintendo DS" is the right way?
Sorry to burst your bubble there Tarek, but that is the same charger plug as the Game Boy Micro. They are just unifying the product lines.
I'm no fanboy, but why is it that NO OTHER company can design and produce hardware that is even half as refined as APPL seems to me able to? Are there no competant industrial designers outside of Cupertino?
I mean, seriously, this looks like a student-produced prototype, not a second-gen production model from the worlds-leading handheld gaming company.
I'm sure it functions fine, but I'm just talking asthetics and attention to detail here . . . . just too many mold lines, seams and sloppy fit. That stuff matters to me when it comes to things I drive, display in my house, or hold in my hands.
Ok. Rant mode off.
"On the back theres a label that says slot2 and above it theres what seems to be a plastic cover for something, any idea what that is? also, where is the stylus stored?"
The stylus is in the back, along the side. Slot 2 has the serial numbre above it. And to the right the battery housing.
i think that port on the bottom one is the same as the GBA micro. does this mean the DSL can do MP gba games?
I'm going to have to agree with everyone who said it looks like cheap and/or old and grubby plastic. From the pictures, this does not look like something one would be anxious to pay ~$150 for.
Oh, /there's/ the stylus holder.
No one else not notice where the power button is? Also, the charger socket is different, that's not good I don't have a converter for my pre-ordered japanese unit (I was hoping it'd be the same socket so I can use my same charger).
-the colour: It's just bad lighting okay, the paint job is fine, I assure You it's completly the some pretty white colour all over and that it was just bad lighting and or the camera used wasn't that great, does white look exactly the same shade in all the photos You've seen white things in, I think not
so don't worry, be happy and the plastic, weather it looks like'it'll snap in halve or whatever I'd say it's extreamly hard to figure this out with just a photo of the device
so yeh don't judge it till You've seen it in person , or someone relieable whos seen it in person has has told You what they think
and as previous posters have stated the stylus slot is on the back of the DSlite (right hand side in the middle)
also the power button, as many sources have stated is on the side of the DSlite, (one of the two sides that haven't been shown yet)
um yeh, looks great
-Stevie
You don't need a converter if it's coming from Japan, bb.
People, pay attention, where the hack is that power button? Anybody wonderd about the idea that this could be a hoax? don't say that it is, but nintendo won't publish such bad images on the net, now would they?
The power button is probaby a slider switch on a side. The sides are not pictured.
What about the screens? Are they as bright as the Gameboy SP? I was going to get a DS, but saw one on display next to the SP and the SP had the best looking screen - hands down. I bought the SP.
Man that thing looks slick. I want one now!
i want it in gloss black...maybe carbon
they had these at a videogame store in saratoge springs, ny as demos. i played mariokart on it, they're pretty nice.
While I am sure that is the final design it looks like it is not the final model (ie prototype model built using cheaper plastics). Using cheaper plastics is common in prototyping as it keeps the costs down. A lot of the prerelease equipment I get at work (not games console related I should add) is in gubby looking plastic but the final model is shinny and smooth. I would be very surprised if the DSlite was released with the plastic in the photo. Also the sticker on the top of the case makes me think it is a prototype of the final design. As does the "slot 2" being printed 3 times on the back.
How sweet would an analog stick like the PSP's be? Seems to work better for my fat thumbs than the traditional Nintendo D-pad. Just my 2-cents.
My 1998 Hoover looks better.
Clearly bad lighting, I'm sure it will be white and glossy like planned, I haven't heard much about pushing the "Old-faded-crap" look.
Perfect. That's what I wanted in the redesigned DS, I'll buy it now. Now, how much longer do I have to wait till it gets released in North America.
Maybe we'll see better photo's tomorrow when Reggie speaks at DICE.
The plastic looks like its different colors because the lighting is different in each photo. If someone posts another "why is the plastic ten shads of dirty white" I may be forced to reach through yr computer and bitch slap you!
Now just think shiney white, because it is going to be shiney white (this is just a prototype) and it looks a lot better then the original one :). But the best of it is and will remain the smaller size/less weight factor. I am surely going to get it when it release. Now I just have to decide if I am going to 'tune' my old one or sell it...
These are images that are required by the FCC for approval of any device that uses part of the radio spectrum ...

Should have made it black and shiny!
Dude, that sucks, I have a regular DS, and I like it better than this. But you don't have to agree with me.
anyone notice that the nintendo logo on the back is mirrored (ie backwards)??? the rest of the text looks okay though. strange...
SN
Ok, this is a mock up
For things like this.. they make a model.. and leave it undecorated...
The original DS would have had the same grubby look in early design.. as would the psp
nintendo wouldn't seriously release it looking like that for sale
and for those that praise the psp.. why?
the games aren't that great.. i mean they look good.. but they get boring quickly..
I'd go for a DS and a Fujitsu Siemens LifeBook P1510D any day :P
People complaining about the colour: odds are that this is a prototype unit, and at least part of the colour variation comes from different lighting in each photograph. I really doubt that Nintendo would deliberately make the finished unit out of three different colours of white. It costs more and looks bad so there's absolutely no reason to. Odds are it's one of the non-functional mockups sent to people like thirdparty peripheral manufacturers so they have an idea of the design and dimensions of the device.
You're all a bunch of losers. Have you never seen a badly taken picture of an iBook or iMac before? That transparent layer of plastic over the pure white?... yeah... that leaves just a bit of a shadow in pictures.
It's not an off white, it's bad photography. But we'll all see soon enough, won't we?
Why is the oval Nintendo logo backwards on the back of the machine?
Is it just me, or is that a USB port on the top of the DS Lite? Certainly looks like one, Perhaps some multimedia functions, and USB charging.
Please see my post over in the IGN forums:

Looks like a cheap cross between an iPod and a PSP
Made some color corrections.

Kudos for removing the easily-pressed software power button from just above the d-pad. Dissings upon them for putting it there in the first place! Grrrr!
Is Nintendo losing their edge? I was expecting something different and modern looking.
It looks like those grey Toshiba laptops from the 1990s, and not just the colour but the design. It's kind of annoying that they bring out this new model, which only really looks different from the first, only a year after the first release. If it had more features than the old one, say better graphics capability, say a USB port, I might replace the old one...Anyhoo, it makes me think that the old one was a mock up to get to the stores quick and was in beta over the last year...we are nintendo-guinnea-pigs!
Wow1 GOOD CALL there, jmos1277. These pics actually came from an FCC filing and there are many more pics at the site.
Funny how the first! comment was a psp fanboy!!!!!!!!
Dont cririaize look only at the good points
i still think they shud have done this one
http://img.engadget.com/common/images/3060000000054227.jpg?0.3596760294834629
however the reason behind the chosing of the design is becasue they dont want it to be hitech looking like the link i just game u. however they shud have made this 1:
http://img.engadget.com/common/images/3060000000053743.jpg?0.9522300379747008
the fisrt 1 shud have been mad for boys and may be some girls the second 4 every 1.
Doesn't anyone notice that the word "ext." is written above the battery cover?
Isn't "ext." what the GBA's link port said by it?
Or it could be referring to those plugs in the battery compartment.
Maybe they can be used for extensions!?!
ya, the opower button is on the side look at page 6 of this pdf of pics of it 4 proof https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=626995&native_or_pdf=pdf
Jmos' stuff is amazing, again,
http://boards.ign.com/revolution_lobby/b8270/109609278/p1/?0
*Cough*PSP is better*Cough*
the second pic from the bottom shows a nice gloss on it - thats what im expecting
But dont expect it to be apple quality. Havnt you all notciced how heavy apples products are ? I expect alot of that is in the thick glossy plasic that gives them their solid look (except the nano, which has worse finish?
This is supposed to be DSLite, so i wouldnt rule out thin plasitic with cheap feel to it.
Wow, looks awesome! Can't wait to finally get a DS!
I'm about 90% sure these images are fake, and there seems to be proof. Look at the back of the DS, the Nintendo logo is backwards (it says odentniN).
Wow...after seeing how ugly this looks, I'm glad I don't own a DS. *coughPSPcough* >.>
#64 Jon Uleis ... then you'd be 90% wrong.
check out the IGN boards where some guy that mysteriously has the same nickname as me posted a link to the FCC filing.

"Looks like a cheap cross between an iPod and a PSP.."
You forgot to say "Looks like a cheap cross between an iPod and a PSP that actually has games..."
Wow--lots of DS bashign here, no need for that people, just because you're insecure about the DS outselling the psp on a regular basis doesn't mean you need to bash it! No! embrace the innovation, and enjoy it's games.
That aside--that's a prototype image, nothing more, a unit sent out to companies like Mad Catz, Pelican, Intec, erc--just to get the dimentions of the device, so they can make cases an stuff for it.
tata...
This looks circa-1980s! Awful, cheap, and looks plain jane! Yikes! (clutching PSP even closer)
People complaining about colors are morons... look at the top, yeah the number? It's a test unit.. I'm suprised they even painted it at all. Do you guys even think?
No one has said this yet, and I am surprised.. But does it seem like it could possibly be photoshopped? I know everyone hates seeing that word. Also something about the screen perspective matching up seems off with the outer lines of the top. The speaker holes also look a little off. Maybe it is all in my head...
I have one of these... Although i've taken it apart. Tommorow I will put it together. Here are the pics.
Oh yeh I scanned the manual too...
You will need adobe acrobat to view them:

And inevitably the PSP fanboys find their way here...
Hey...if you have such an amazing piece of hardware...then go use it rather than wasting time posting on a thread about something you're so glad not to have.
I mean do all of you PSP fanboys "clutching your PSP's tightly" go to this much effort for EVERY device you don't have??
Let alone the fact most DS owners bought their handheld GAME console for the amazingly esoteric reason of playing games...
I mean in what possible way can this redesign be "a cross between an iPod and PSP"?? It's must be that Nintendo has NEVER made a handheld before so anything with a D-pad and four buttons must be based on a PSP...and a SCREEN..Wow...what other innovations came with the PSP to handheld gaminf...a volume control perhaps??
the reason it looks dirty is the plastic coloring is different. If you notice they used the "snow white" type of paint like apple where they use translucent plastic and paint the inside. it's just really crappy pics this should look extra sexy.
Beyond that, this looks like a pre-manufactured demo unit. It's pretty common knowledge that makers will use lesser-grade plastics to create demo units so you can judge look and feel. Nintendo's always put a LOT of care into their systems, and I have no doubt the DS lite will look fine when it comes out.
Oh come on you guys. It is obviously an early prototype. I mean, the thing isn't coming out till when? I doubt they have the final model done already.
I like it. I will probably pick one up sometime. Well, I'll get to work this summer. Maybe I'll pick it up along with a GBM. That is, if I already have a Revolution. That takes first priority!
Well I like this one, it looks more like it should be called Famicom DS, ballz to overpriced sleek hunks of pastic!
agreed, the desgin needs to be improved, how come the cheap 90's plsatic look? A bit of metalic would be nice
#78 has put it most eloquently.
The oval Nintendo logo on the back is reversed, like a mirror image. What gives?
Fugley, they really need to get a better paint job on that if you know that I mean. It does look cheap as well to some extent. Probably later versions will look better though.
However, if they do to make it as small as they say they are, thats really cool.
I was kind of hoping that they had a different sound volume control. The one on the regular ds to me is really sensitive.
On the whole, I think the size they've done well but they could do various improvements.
Damn i am going to mad cause i have the old old one -_-...........but still sexy.....MUST BUY!!!!!!!!!
this is a joke, are you people serious, do you honestly think this thing is real?!?!
Has a USB port... Could make for some useful hacks!!!
You make the DS lite look bad. Please take some photoshop lessons and a photography class.

kinda goes both ways doesnt it? let sony release some new info and every anti sony person in the world shows up!
you should really take your own advice though before you post stupid shit like that.
Yes, the power button is now on the side! There have been several occasion where I end up pressing power instead of start. Does anybody else have that problem?
Sweet! I might get one of these simply because i dont want to risk losing my PSP on the train - someone might steal it - so i'd use this (cheaper) instead....
or maybe get a GBAM...

ya.. and you won't actually power the thing off unless you push it HARD. that's on purpose..
open ur DS, and lightly tap the power button.. it wont come on unless u push hard..
