HTC Star Trek is the i-mate Smartflip?
We
were kind of hoping for something a little more, but it looks like some pictures have surfaced of the
supposedly-RAZR-thin HTC Star Trek,
which we saw last year. According to pocketinfo.nl, i-mate should be announcing this thing at 3GSM badged as the i-mate
Smartflip, and that we can expect it to have Windows Mobile 5.0 (Smartphone, no doubt), Bluetooth, EDGE, and MicroSD.
Still no dirt yet on the other phone we caught wind of the same time last year, the Hermes, HTC Wizard's followup (but
here's to hoping that'll be announced at 3GSM, too).

Well, here's hoping that if they are going to call it a
STAR TREK phone, that when you flip it open, it makes that 60's TV show clicky clicky sound LOL...
David @ Feb 12th 2006 11:34AM
I think the name of the phone is actually HTC Start Rack.
xbit @ Feb 12th 2006 1:15PM
That thing looks cheap and ugly.

What....no wifi? Meh

I've often wished that someone would create a cell phone that actually looked like a Star Trek communicator, complete with the sound effect when you open the phone. The technology should allow for this to be created.
I agree with number 1, that sound effect would be awesome.

A Star Trek phone should at the very least look like and flip open like a tricorder.
Chris Smith @ Feb 12th 2006 4:29PM
I agree the sound would be cool,
but I'm witing for the one that you can clip to your shirt like Star Treck next gen.
TookyG @ Feb 12th 2006 4:32PM
@ #6 A tricorder? It's a phone, it should be like the /communicators/ from Star Trek.
D.Ray @ Feb 12th 2006 4:35PM
#3 has got it right. That thing looks cheap and ugly.
AND it doesn't resemble a S.T. communicator at all, not even a little bit.
AND most of the regular mobiles made today look better and smaller than what they thought they would look like back in the 60's.So the nostalga is sort of...crippling.
AND maybe the better thing would be to have the next generation things that look like a tacky brooch and you just tap it and talk.(When they did that, how did the communicator know exactly who they wanted to talk to?)
FINALLY, not to be a jerk, but it seems to me that a trekkie so caught up in the show that they would have a S.T. phone probably doesn't have a lot of friends to call anyway. And the phones don't get very good connections from their parent's basement.

Tricorders are huge and heavy.
Rich @ Feb 12th 2006 7:12PM
Forget a Star Trek cell! What about a Matrix cell! :-P

Can we just pause for a moment to appreciate engadget...a place where nerds can be nerds.
KEVIN @ Feb 12th 2006 9:02PM
I don;t think itis HTC design.
I've checked HTC website. All its products are belong to smartphone models, and the model in this picture and HTC'productsa are stylsih. Must be fake!
Dave @ Feb 13th 2006 1:01AM
#13, it does have a flat keypad and some other new peoples. HTC's products haven't always been stylish and since this is one of the eew (or maybe the first) flip phone, it could take HTC a little bit of time to get style down for the form factor. I still think it is pretty nice.
alienhead @ Feb 13th 2006 10:23AM
DORKS!
art @ Feb 13th 2006 5:13PM
to be worthy of the name I need only one thing: the ability to open with the flick of the wrist. The "thumb shove" doesn't count.
Chris Smith @ Feb 16th 2006 5:20PM
Yeah but the closest looking phone to a tricorder would have to be the RAZR, you have to admit that.
even though the tricorder is not used for communication.
Mark Cohen @ Feb 19th 2006 5:11AM
I love it, the first really usable windows mobile IMHO. Trekkie conformity aside, having a smartphone I'm happy to use will be great

Happy Birthday Engadget...

Doesn't look particularly innovative, I think the RAZR looks better and probably is more functional
