Nokia 6136 combines GSM/WiFi
Nokia is jumping on the UMA (unlicensed
mobile access) bandwagon with the 6136, a GSM phone that also works with LANs over WiFi. The phone, a clamshell,
quad-band GSM model with a 1.3 megapixel camera, will be out during the second quarter, and will initially be available
on the Orange network. The phone is primarily targeted at corporate customers who can deploy the phone for use both as a
cellphone for external use, and as a VoIP phone within company facilities.

Looks like the SIP based VoiP client on the new Nokia's with WLAN will only work if combined with Cisco or Alcatel VoIP hardware. Kinda thought so, Mobile Network Providers would probably boycott Nokia if the new phones would allow VoIP calls via every open WLAN network (which are ALL over the place nowadays). So, now all we need is a regular SIP client for Symbian, but since the new version of Symbian requires all software be "Symbian signed", they'll most likely not sign a piece of software that will allow users to cut into Mobile Network Providers revenue.
Still HOT for a Nokia E70 though !
Enjoy,
Jay

I think this type of phone would really take off on college campuses, as most of them are blanketed by WiFi.

Look for this phone on T-Mobile later this year when the T-Mobile@Home (UMA) service launches.

wooden it be just great if Nokia could get out some of the phones they annouced LAST YEAR (like the N91) before they announce any new shit?
woodentopz @ Feb 14th 2006 6:34AM
what happened to the various comments discussing the merits of this phone which were here yesterday? were they not suitably full of empty-headed praise to be acceptable to Nokia?

hmm something odd going on here...

If anyone comes across SIP client software which would work on Symbian (Nokia Communicator 9500), PLEASE be so kind as to let me know. I am using VOIP wirelessly but it is irritating to have a separate phone rather than use my good old Communicator!
If you would, please, email me at
mrstannard@tax-law.co.uk
with any information, I shall be most grateful
Thanks

Don't get too carried away.
I have had one of these for about 3 months now and it's pretty ordinary.
For a start the phone looks a bit girly.
Plus the shell is very shiny and prone to scratches, so if you plan on carrying this phone around in your pocket it will end up all scratched (like mine is, after only 3 months of normal use)
The WiFi sounds good but really the phone has a crippled TCPIP stack on it. The only thing you can do with WiFi is connect to a UMA server so it can use the WiFi connection in leiu of a GSM base station.
That means that even if you are connected to a WiFi network, you still have to use expensive GPRS (which is tunneled through the wifi connection to a UMA server)
The UI is Nokia series 40 so it's pretty decent, runs Opera and checks/sends email without too much hassle.
But overall I think the wifi angle is a gimmick and this is really a phone suited to being carried around in a handbag, not in pockets.

As a VoIP PBX manufacturer ipgenie has tested a number of GSM WIFI handsets including the one D-Link was going to release. Pirelli works well but is slightly complicated for laymen to use as site surveys and changing pulic and private IP addresses are needed when leaving the LAN and entering hotspots.
Currently testing the iPAQ 514 PDA as a budget model for small business.
Our switch provides Unified Messaging and the iPAQ 514 gives the ability to pick up voicemail from the office on your email application.
