A PhonEY Bluetooth headset disguises what phone you're really toting
Stephen wasn't so hot with everyone -- especially
the criminal types -- knowing he was toting a $1000 i-mate JasJar. Either that or he
just didn't want to hold something that large next to his head, so he devised the "PhonEY" hack to place a
Bluetooth headset in an old Nokia handset so the baddies would think that's all the phone he's got. A few solders and
bits of glue later and he had a functioning device that allows him to keep his JasJar in his bag and criminals in the
dark. Seems like great idea for some quick eBay bucks, but it is one more bulky device to carry, and if it finally
pushes some geeks over to the dark side of man purse usage, is it really
worth it in the end?

If I had a $1000 phone I would be that paranoid also.
Thats pretty funny but a nifty idea non the least.
What's the point to having a $1000 phone if you're gonna talk on a crappy Nokia handset?
I'm hiding a Ferrari inside my Trabant.
So, uh, out of curiosity...how is this better than just using a BT headset to begin with? I mean, some pretty cheap ass phones come with bluetooth. It seems like you wouldn't be going any farther out on a limb than your rank and file Nokia toter if you just used the standard run of the mill BT headset.
*shrug*
Why get a $1000 phone and not use it? Bluetooth is good for calls, but what happens when you want to use the other capabilities?
I have a Nokia 8800 and I'm not afraid people see it. I use if when I need to. If you are too paranoid about theft, then don't get the phone.
Still I would say its a nice design and idea.
If I had a $1000 phone, I would have insurance like I do now. Anyway, the criminals here have the best phones anyway. Everyone has bluetooth, so you dont know what anyone is talking on.

Ranron, How do you like the 8800? I was thinking about buying one. 2 quick questions. Can you answer a call without opening it? and How easy is it to open?
Thanks.
If you're that paranoid about criminals around you, it's time to move.
Just plain stupidty... $1000 phone, but you're using an earpiece + a fair amount of work.. Just to make it look like you're using a 3000 series Nokia. Uh, why not just use the earpiece alone?
Maybe it's just me but.. aside from the ingenuity.. This is pointless.
That's got to be the most asinine thing I've heard all day. I mean, spending $1,000 on a cell phone is bad enough. If you need just need to burn money, why not pick up a nice coke habit? But the paranoia that accompanies this idiocy, combined with the utter senselessness of buying something based on the cache it creates and then hiding it... It boggles the mind.
In summation; Stupid, stupid, stupid, stuid. And stupid.
Why do people bitch about having "another device" to carry.
This is to stop a theif.. Carry a gun then.
Well I'm sure he uses the phone but maybe not when he's out walking through some less than savory neighborhoods.

Hey, I picked up a 8801 about two months ago. You definitely can answer the phone without opening it - you use two softkeys on either side of the slider ridge. Tho to be honest, I don't know why you'd do that - it snaps open so.. slickly. I am not wont to throw these words out, but the phone is pretty freakin' pimp. After a couple months of constant use, you'd think the novelty had worn off. Nope. The only downside (besides price, obviously) is the battery life. Nowhere close to some phones (my last was a razr), but definitely doable.
Cheers,

woaah.. this is deja vu.. i had the a similar problem till last week. i gotr the spring ppc 6700 (htc apache) and didnt want to use it as phone cuz of its large size . so i thouoght that a headset would be a best choice but i didnt want to wear a headset all the time , pretending to look important all day long. so i was trying to make up a bluetooth headset that looks like a really small phone which i could keep in my pocket. the closes i came to this was to to get a jabra vibrating headset but it was very inconvenient to put it on when a call came, it was meant to stay on your ear all the time... had to give the ppc back...
And, just what, is wrong with a man purse? I love my Podzilla. :)
Way to void a warranty.
My Tumi "man bag" is great, i can fit my 12.1" laptop, AC adapter, extra battery, bluetooth dongle, treo, voice recorder and digital camera all inside of it. And when you wear it around, women notice. So I fear I must disagree with your opinion on the man "purse" It is an amazing bag that gets done all I need it to do.
My, so many crabby people. It's friday, lighten up. Having just acquired one of these phones, I can tell you that it is VERY useful for many things other than as a phone. I bought it because:
It has a full keyboard(even though it's small, I can use it)
It has 640x480 resolution - good for movies, or remote admin of servers(with the wifi). Most things out there are QVGA
It has a standard headphone jack for listening to things - no adapter required
But about the whiners about "where you live" and such: Maybe YOU can't relate, but I can. I live in a nice area, and I work in a really rich, safe area... but heavy freeway traffic forces me to take the train/subway in order to maintain my mental sanity. A lot of unsavory people ride on public transit, and there's not always a cop around to protect you. So the question is... do you let the bad people keep you from getting nice things? My answer would be to side with this guy - outsmart them.
I'm driving a Bentley disguised as a Yugo.
Yeah.. Very useful.. IF IT'S IN YOUR HAND. Can you use those things on the Bluetooth mockup? Don't think so. Just lame.. UGH.
Is it possible to use the i-mate jasjar with the verizon service, or is it not cdma compatable?? Please tell...
TO answer all the critics (im the creator of this)
well, yeah the other jasjar owner is right, its for being on the train or in unsavoury neighbourhoods, its ok for calling, wearing a bluetooth headset also makes you a target, I know countless people who've had their headsets ripped off their ear while walking down the street, also i carry it in the smaller than JasJar size mobile phone pouch on my backpack
why don't you buy a good headset, change its firmware so you can view the menu and the caller on the original nokia lcd, also have acces to the phonebook, call list... you would do that with a little over 150euros. (and a few days' work). Or better yet, why don't you take the darn sim and place it in a 3310?
what about 3-way calling? what about initiating calls?
you can control the call using the nokia menu button, also i just had this stuff lying around, i didnt go out and sepcially buy stuff, also the sim thing, no, I use my jasjar for everything (email, sms, mms, calls) this is just for on the train or in bad neighhbourhoods receiving calls
The point is, aws910, is that if you have to take something nice and bust it up and put it in something that isn't nice, then you don't have something nice anymore. If you're worried about loss of property, have it insured, and stop living your life in fear.
Great idea, if only you could access your phonebook and dial calls directly from it. I currently use a small cheap phone, but I would love a large pda phone in my bag or cargo pocket and be able to use a small phone to control it.

Get a big sharp knife, learn how to use it,
and slice up any idiot who attempts to
victimize you.
sigh, when will people learn? you buy a phone to use... having a PocketPC means that you need to take it out to check e-mail IM etc. so what's the point of hiding it when you need to talk on it, and $1000 cell phone isn't THAT much this guy is just over paranoid...
Kinda of retarded. Why not just use ummm a bluetooth headset! Than just keep your phone in your pocket.
Though I would agree with some of the other commenters, like, say, carrying a gun, learning self-defense, being paranoid, and using a cheap phone instead, would be a good idea... wouldn't all of you agree that if that thief would do more harm to you than just steal your oh-so-inviting-$1000-phone (which, noone could predict otherwise), you too, would do at least SOMETHING to protect yourself BEFORE it ever happens. You wouldn't be carrying that phone out in the open on your left hand and have the gun on the other (or show-off martial-arts/self-defense skills) to fend off attackers or thieves, when all you need to do is just be wise enough to not flaunt an expensive item when it isn't necessary. I think the creator of this thing exercised his skill and creativity, than have the need to carry a heavy gun, bring a knife, and be paranoid that there might be thieves watching, when all he needed to do was answer a phone call, which could be of great importance to him. Can your insurance be there for your kids' graduation when you're dead? This guy is a genius... and puts his mind to good use. I certainly could use something like this, I save a lot more money for my next expensive gadget.
Why dont you just leave it at home? simply use the cheaper Nokia
To all critics:
I have built something along similar lines and one thing you get is satisfaction once you have got it going. Nobody would be inventing or innovating anything if they were believing those critics who probably don't have skills to make anything.
Using something obsolete and making it to something useful is a good thing.
I think this is a good idea when travelling, hiding the expensive gear in some pocket rather than in a man purse. When you are in a safe environment you can pull out your Jas Jar and do the emails etc. I would keep it hidden myself if I had one.
I wonder if there is available kind of tecno jacket which would have lot of hidden pockets, speakers up in shoulders, keyboard on the sleeve, lcd displays on sunglasses, etc?
