More screens of ALP prototype in action
Now this
is more like it. After being teased by shots of
Access PalmSource's new Access Linux Platform OS running the Memo app in emulation last week, we've finally got some
screens of the rest of the OS. This is, of course, an early prototype, so a lot can change between now and the final
release. It does seem, though, that they're coming along well, and the source article claims a developer SDK will be
out before the end of the year, with the first devices appearing in 2007. Check the read link for a bit of hot ALP
Minesweeper action, along with another shot of Memo in emulation.

When you look at all four shots, it adds up to a depressing picture. There's no obvious attempt to synergise with the PalmOS "brand" and its rep for ease of use.
Instead, it's a diverse, scruffy collection of generic Linux UI bits that gives the impression of a bunch of open source nerds having an aimless play on a new platform.
What's really scary is that someone thought it was OK to show it at a trade show in that state.

Is that an iTunes icon in the upper right corner?

Is it just me or does that little pinkish thing that the wrench is clamped around look like a nipple? Or is it just my perverted mind.

I highly recommend that they change the top-left icon in the first image...
_SeT_ @ Feb 22nd 2006 9:26PM
Yeah, I wouldn't have an icon that had the common acronym for "piece of sh*t" on any device/software I wanted to market.

that top left icon defines my opinion on it so far.
a ton of icons that aren't real obvious as to their function. and thus doesn't make for a very easy to use OS.

Sweet Cheez-its! Is that GTK Support I see??!?!?! YAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!!

#7 - Yes. GTK2 and GNOME. I'm pretty pumped up being a Linux nerd and all... but Windows Mobile puts up a good fight. It would be nice to see a swift start-up from someone... although with Linux... might not happen.
But who knows? It could be faster, and someone might find a way to shrink down everyone's favorite Linux apps...

@Jesse:
Maybe not, or maybe really our perverted minds.
