Apple to announce iPod boombox, sez ThinkSecret
ThinkSecret, who love to gossip even
more than we do, are reporting that one
of their "good friends" "accidentally" "let it slip" that along with the video iPod, Intel Mac mini,
iSight-sportin'
13-inch widescreen MacBook, Media Cube,
"touch finger
LCDs," 17-inch MacBook Pro,
and countless other devices that Steve Jobs will definitely reveal to be the promised "fun new products"
on Tuesday, is a "HiFi" boombox for the iPod that will "deliver unique capabilities beyond what
today's third-party docking speaker systems offer." Now ThinkSecret has been known to get it right more than once,
and it seems that their accuracy only improves as an announcement gets closer, so this rumored product doesn't sound as
wild as some of the others being tossed around. As usual, though, all we can do is wait, and fill that waiting time
with speculation after speculation after speculation. [Note: Above photo is a Photoshopped iBoom, and is being used for
illustrative purposes only.]

Mark Umpirowicz @ Feb 26th 2006 12:06PM
This is just a photoshopped logo on an existing boom box that sounds like s@%t. These boom boxes are available at numerous stores in Canada, are not made by Apple, have no volume and sound crappy. I had one and took it back within 2 hours.
Brian M @ Feb 26th 2006 12:13PM
Yeah, that looks nothing like an Apple product...that thing looks like crap.
jared @ Feb 26th 2006 12:16PM
what, that thing doesn't scream "cutting edge industrial design" and "audio for the discriminating listener" to you?
redford @ Feb 26th 2006 12:24PM
gonna have to have a remote control and a huge LCD.
asli @ Feb 26th 2006 12:36PM
i will lose all my respect for apple if a new ipod is released in less than a month after i purchased my 5g. when did the 5th generation exactly come out anyway? would they dare release a new one in such a short time?
rifigium @ Feb 26th 2006 12:37PM
the REAL iPod Boombox

Tex @ Feb 26th 2006 12:41PM
This picture isn't a REAL iPod boombox, but a photoshopped iBoom. And there's no way the one rifigium posted would be a real one either--using an oooooold iPod model for a display.
Myles @ Feb 26th 2006 12:43PM
This is interesting, but hopefully they won't choose either design.
EatingPie @ Feb 26th 2006 12:50PM
"Photoshopped iBoom"
Yeah, I was gonna say, I sure hope Apple wouldn't make anything THAT ugly!

Prodigy @ Feb 26th 2006 12:56PM
Yea thats not an apple product.
Nathan @ Feb 26th 2006 1:00PM
Who would use a boom box. I hardly use my ipod as it is, i just use my computer. When I do use my ipod i use my headphones i would hate to carry around a big boombox for the one time i may use it. If they do make it, it wont sell.
Blake Mayerle @ Feb 26th 2006 1:06PM
I say no. I don't think that they will do this because they get a cut from all the Ipod speaker systems, (the good ones at least.) Why make a new speaker system and spend the $ when you can just rake in the cash on the ones out there already? I mean sure, it would be a cool design, but Apple doesn't make cool looking stuff just to look cool, it has to have a reason to exist. I say some kind of media type thing. I hope it is the video Ipod.
This makes me want a video Ipod more!

OHH YES! I hope this is all true my birthday is a few days away! I want this new video ipod so badly!

Thinksecret's methodology for reporting before events is to put up every single rumor that they've heard about, that way when the actual products come out they can claim that they were absolutly right and forget about the rest of their claims. Calling this system "getting it right" seems to give them a lot more credit than they deserve.
Cutter @ Feb 26th 2006 1:17PM
Okay I love the apple rumors as much as the next person, but c'mon engadget, if we want to hear all of Apple Insider's rumors, we can go to their website and read. I think you should be getting actual stories, and no rumors.
John @ Feb 26th 2006 1:24PM
Yeah if your going to report rumours you could at least make up your own.
An iPod Boombox? Is it 1985 again?
mahatma jojo @ Feb 26th 2006 1:29PM
That's fugly! I seriously doubt that this tacky thing is included in the new product announcements, but a full-front landscape-mode video ipod *will* be. I'll finally have a reason to upgrade my 2g iPod...
brad @ Feb 26th 2006 1:46PM
What?!
with so many ipod docking speaker setups and boomboxes already on the market it would be nice if someone could mention one possible "unique capability" that would warrant jobs to want to make this. suppose you could bundle wifi with it to sync wirelessly, but that's hardly all that innovative. this seems unlikely.
Brad @ Feb 26th 2006 1:52PM
Maybe it'll be a boombox with integrated satellite radio capabilities. That would be something different from all the other current speaker setups for iPods.
rex @ Feb 26th 2006 2:01PM
I was expecting this thing to look like an apple apple...
DerekJ @ Feb 26th 2006 2:32PM
I say no.
What I think they should be releasing is a new airport express station that not only can stream audio, but has a video-out so you can view your media (audio/video) in a front row kinda situation. Wouldn't that be splendid?
TheZodiac @ Feb 26th 2006 2:33PM
There will NEVER be an Apple branded Sattelite radio unless Apple launches their own sattlietes. And you know thats not happening.
DJ LEX @ Feb 26th 2006 2:42PM
i am a huge apple fan i have a powermac dual G5 and just bought an imac 20 inch, with an apparent 8 speed DVD burner, no matter what discs i use it WILL NOT burn at 8 speed and everywhere on the internet says the same thing, isnt it illegal to sell a product under false pretence, I have always liked apple as it does what it says on the box and has always worked for me. However the matshita drive in it is a complete joke, APPLE what are you playing at???? You have pure and simply ripped off a good customer, donot buy one unless you want to pay another 60 for a pioneer writer and external caddy, which i wanted to avoid taking up desk space, i am very angry, apple, you can kiss my ass!!!!!!
Will @ Feb 26th 2006 3:08PM
I think Apple has to release a true Video iPod soon. there are a lot of folks out there for whom (my self included) the 5g is not compelling enough to make them want trade up their old 1-4th gen. I say they would be crazy not to relase a better Video iPod on Tuesday.
as for a boom box. Yawn.
admo @ Feb 26th 2006 3:08PM
Surely one of the "unique capabilities" will be a screen for watching your videos on, no? A portable, very nice, overpriced (or not, depending on your Obi-Wan factor) a/v center.
The Truth @ Feb 26th 2006 3:44PM
Guys (and gals?), it's not going to be a new video iPod tomorrow. I doubt it will be anything but ancillary products like this. Apple never does a major product release in their little low-pro town hall. Their own invitation says "fun new products." If something big were coming, it would read more like "Apple invites you to witness the unveiling of the greatest invention since sex."
Joel @ Feb 26th 2006 3:48PM
"14. Okay I love the apple rumors as much as the next person, but c'mon engadget, if we want to hear all of Apple Insider's rumors, we can go to their website and read. I think you should be getting actual stories, and no rumors."
Well thanks for your input. Some of us like the rumors involving upcoming new products and dont want to head over to 10 rumor sites to find out what they are. Engadget does it for us so stop complaining.
Believe it or not: Gadget news sometimes consists of rumors.

If that link doesn't work go to www.gizmodo.com and scroll until you find the article.
I'm hella pissed off right now!
Reid @ Feb 26th 2006 4:55PM
That makes me think that Steve Jobs wasn't lying on his "Super Secret Apple Rumours" Podcast at Macworld.
:D
Chris Reid @ Feb 26th 2006 5:18PM
I don't know what the fascination would be with an iPod boombox. I either listen to my iPod through my car radio or on headphones. At home i listen to music throught my Denon reciever and Paradigm surrond system via my iBook and airport express. Why would I even want a boombox.
Reg @ Feb 26th 2006 6:12PM
#25> "Apple invites you to witness the unveiling of the greatest invention since sex."
Well, if you're a Christian, and believe all that Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden bunk, then Apple had a hand in that too...!
(If you're not a Christian, look closely at the titles of Desperate Housewives.)
mike @ Feb 26th 2006 6:19PM
as for a boom box. Yawn.

OF COURSE you're gonna say that, only a fool would let everyone know he listens to Hilary Duff...
dave @ Feb 26th 2006 6:22PM
everyone has an ipod tho, and i mean everyone if a boombox existed that had direct ipod connectivity it would save so much trouble theres been so many times where ive gone to a party the music sucked ass, everyone had an ipod but nobody had av jacks or a smartdeck
im mad tho that this was posted cause i was the first person to post a preaty nifty photoshop of a mac boombox and not only did ppl submit the same thing right after mine was posted but now, because orignality points just went down the drain big time the chances of me winning are slim to none maybe ill submit a new one tho if i have time
Matt @ Feb 26th 2006 6:50PM
Apple will release something but simply a ipod boombox doesn't sound much like apple. I think it will be either a new airtunes with speakers, or this is all part of the new mac mini.
Nathan @ Feb 26th 2006 7:49PM
Apple will release something that has bits of plastic and metal. It will also be powered by electricity. Rumours also point towards it costing money, and it being available both in retail stores and the online Apple Store.
Donnie @ Feb 27th 2006 7:40AM
Too bad the days of the huge 80s boombox are gone, we get stuck with photoshopped "boomboxes" for a dap.
rico @ Feb 27th 2006 11:36AM
come on now, seriously...
http://www.faq-mac.com/mt/archives/img/iboom/iboom2.jpg
look familiar?
Scott @ Feb 27th 2006 3:54PM
of course its the iboom, dumbass. read the whole article next time.
jeff @ Mar 2nd 2006 5:58PM
When you announce 80 "definite" product releases, you're bound to get close on 1 or 2.
Think secret's big secret to accuracy is listing 5 hundred things as "definite" and then a week later saying "See? we told you that one product was coming... just forget all the other wrong guesses."
worthless. Let's see, they got 2 out of their 6? (... the 6 that you listed, probably more like 2 out of 15)
