like Apple wants to make sure to own a piece of every sector of the iPod accessory market. In addition to the $349 iPod Hi-Fi, the company also
announced its own $99 leather iPod case. Sure, it's a pretty basic sleeve, and only fits the iPod with video or nano,
but if you want an official Apple case with an Apple logo and "iPod" stamped on the front, this is the place
to go (though we hear there are some pretty convincing knockoffs available on Canal Street for about $15).

I hope this makes some of the Apple fanboys realize how little Stevie J thinks of them.
Well, as soon as I saw "some medium scale things" I commenced the anticlimax.
Both this case and the speaker just seem overpriced in my opinion. Here in the UK, the iPod has got more expensive, and this case makes it seem that price increases are due for almost all Apple (iPod) products. I am quite happy with my iSkin. Also, I wanted to buy the Radio Remote that they showed off in January, but they are still not available yet in the UK, just as TV shows aren't on iTunes, where we pay more for music.
That speaker seems good quality too, but is it better quality than the downloaded iTunes music provides?
So much anticipation... guess I'll wait a month for "some large scale things".

Absolutely Gross. iPod Street (Awful name, I know) has an amazing high end full leather case that opens for access, at $45. I've got it, and it's of extremely high quality.
This is absolute tripe. What a lousy presentation today... I'm dissapointed with all of these products.
So...lemme get this straight, this is just a sleeve, it doesn't give you access to any functions on the player, so you STILL have to pull it out to get to the controls, so the chances of scracthing your player still remain, and they're selling this for a BENNY!! I think " His Steveness'" turtleneck is too tight, or he's been wearing the wrong size new balances, He MUST be CRAZY!!!!

That's awful. I have seen much better for much less. The only way I see these being sold is if they are bundled and the price is lowered when purchasing an Ipod.
The apple store also has them for the iPod nano, but the price is the same at $99.

my first reaction was blah.
but I think people are missing the point. nowhere on the apple site do they use the word 'portable' to descibe this. this is not a boom box but a compact speaker system for home or yard. in that context I think it's okay, if not too pricey... but so what else is new.

I was really excited when i read the live updates earlier. But when i finally saw it, it is sooooo not worth it. First off its a sleeve, which even though looks nice is not worth that price. Especially when Vaja cases (although expensive) are amazing. Just my 8.314 cents

Oh yeah I forgot to mention, with Vaja cases I've bought 6 i-volution cases from them (t616, treo 600, ipod 3g, ipod 5g, 2 for the treo 650 (both types)) and i continue to enjoy those products as you can see; also soon i will be purchasing two more classic cases ^_^ Sorry apple, no dice on this one.
If they however launched a black remote for 5g ipod i would have been on that, well most likely, but still nein ^_^

This and the boombox seem like bad moves, not even taking into account the price/quality. Part of the reason the iPod became more popular in my opinion was all the third party accessories made specifically for the Ipod. Apple introducing their own seems like it will alienate all the smaller companies producing iPod accessories. If apple is a technology company they should focus on making new tech, not releasing products to compete with the already existing cottage-industry of iPod accessories.

This is fine quality leather, from an actual cow.
It runs at 4x the speed of the colored socks, it has built in high definition stitching. You can take it in the bathtub. You can use it with the Remote, Front Row, it shows up in iTunes. You can even mount it as a SMB share!
Does $99 still sound like too much money? We have already sold 4 of them, and we will be giving away 1 free music store download to the 10th person that buys it.

This makes a Vaja look like a steal! I think the ipod has 'jumped the shark'. Also,today I finally got to have a hands on w/ the Creative Vision...amazing device. And the new Samsung nano-style player is very cool. Yep,ipods death grip is about to losen....the competition is finally making products that are not only better then the ipod but cooler. Now,if ONLY they could make some decent software! This case is a joke. I'd pay $40 tops and only if it offered full function w/o removing the ipod.
I went to Best Buy today to see if they had the $50 FM ipod remote...but the Creative offers FM outta the box...hmmm.....
Hey now - let's stop the ranting for one second and think about why this happened. Apple's stock has been on the rise for a while now. As a stock gets more and more expensive (and more and more overpriced) it's hard to squeeze out additional gains.
The solution: introduce some stuff sooo ungodly crappy that the stock falls. Short tons of stock before the keynote and go home happy =)

No, the screen is covered when fully inserted into the case. It is shown 1/2 inserted in this photo for illustrative purposes.

99 bucks for a sleeve just doesn't make sense. If it had a nice window, a labeled thumb wheel area, holes for the headset and the dock cable, and turned into steel to actually protect the device during a fall, then maybe.
Other than being black, how is this any different than the sleeve that comes with the ipods?! Those are made of nice feeling material. And if they are the same, can we get a $99 discount on an ipod if we choose to buy one without a sleeve?
