Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook Q2010: world's most desirable laptop?
We think Fujitsu Siemens may be going just a little too far by declaring their limited edition Lifebook Q2010
the "world's most desirable laptop." After all, while the $5,000 notebook may have built-in 3G networking,
Bluetooth, WiFi, 1GB RAM, a black "piano lacquer" finish, an eight-hour battery and a weight of about 2 1/2
pounds, we sort of expect something marketed as a "truly aspirational product" to have at least a
little bling. Where are the diamonds? Where's
the gold? Where's the leather trim? Never mind. Where can we get one?

Who cares about this, apple is about to release new products.
"piano lacquer" also known as iPod black?
pesonally even though its slower, i like my white ibook way better.
(id rather hav a macbook pro)
Haven't they seen Apple's line up?
This doesn't look like the new Mac. Wait, Apple isn't the only computer manufacturer in the world?
yuck -- anything that runs Windows is a commodity item. This reminds me of the awful things Chrysler did to sell cars in the 70s and 80s.
soul-less bling
My Apple IIe is so much better than that. It's an Apple.
piano lacquer==fingerprint magnet
Inside ten minutes usage, this thing is going to look like you smeared it with a hamburger patty.
whats with the mac geeks? Yes this is a pro notebook for business use not a toy. lol
And I hate that white ibook. White is so kiddy. I really hope the next ibook(macbook) is silver or black.
Fujitsu are always overpriced, but this has it all. I wouldnt pay more than 3000 for a machine... Considering WE ALL want new ones way too soon.
This is ridiculous...even Sony's laptops are cheaper.
I agree, since when is everyone a mac fan?
People seem to get excited about pretty colors, black turtle necks, and no software now days.
Apple is a fad.
Correction - A white laptop is not kiddy. A dirty white laptop is kiddy. If you have had an iBook since its released and it's still white then that show style baby! :P
P.s. I dont own a mac but would sell my face to buy one
I have bought over 20 Fujitsu laptops, some top of th e line machines and then a bunch of E2010s. I will now be that guy, Don't buy a Fujitsu laptop. Teh performace is horriable, they bluescreen with no known cause. I have spent tons of money shipping laptops back for repair and on occasion it has take 60 days to get a laptop back. They look great but its not worth the risk. I thought buying from a company as large as Fujitsu would be safe, but its been the worst purchasing decision I have made since starting as a system administrator in 1997.
Im not buying anything until vista is realeased. Any operating system that can plug and play jump drives as ram has my vote.
Here we go again! all the apple geeks are on the scene once again. I'm getting pretty fed up with all this apple garbage on this website. I love this website ... but with all these trolls it's almost impossible. Nobody is talking about apple in this new article where did apple come from??? You guys are happy with your macs more power too all of you as for me Apple is a no go.. Respect each others preferences and stop acting childish. I think they shouldn't allow >25 year olds to post on here. This is way out of hand.
Well back to the subject. This is indeed the most desirable notebook out there at this point based on all those specs. Well a bit overpriced but this thing will eat any competition for now. Way to go. I want one bad .. now!
James. I owned a fujitsu and a friend of mine does and they were great machines.
I find corporate users are much harder on notebooks than any other user. they just basically toss them around like nothing. They dont care they didnt pay for them. i can tell you how many smashed LCDS i saw working in IT from dumb asses who couldnt take care of their stuff. One guy dropped beer on 3 different laptops.
Notice how the apple guys comment first, too much time on their hands, need to get a job, then they might appreciate a real computer.
Love Fujitsu never had a problem from the equipment, users? now that's a different story.
"whats with the mac geeks? Yes this is a pro notebook for business use not a toy. lol"
Better word processor/presentation software than Windows
Better web browser than Windows comes with
Better security than is standard on Windows
Simpler UI than windows
All better for business use. I'm not sure which part of it is a toy.
For work use, if Linux runs well on this Fujitsu laptop, I'd consider it instead of a Mac. For home use, I'd go with the Mac as it's cheaper and friendlier.
Huh??
For the love, how did a product manager justify nearly a full 5 times the cost of my Toshiba Tecra S2?!
I have a GigaNIC, 11g, card reader PLUS a 15-in screen with 64MB dedicated VRAM!
After rebate and adding 1GB of RAM to the stock 512, I was still under $1400!
Absolutely ludicrous. Fire whoever came up with this...
P.S. Sad to admit, but the Apple fanbots (not misspelled) above actually have a leg to stand on here. Even if the iBooks were/are the worst value in portable computing right after HP.
Oh my GAWD...it's NOT a MAC?!
KILL IT!! DIE!! DIE!! DIE!! DIE!! DIE!! DIE!!
Arguing on the internet is like competing in the special olympics..... Even if you win you are still retarded
This goes out to ALL of you
What happened to the ban on using the word "bling" on Engadget?
In these parts, we ice out. Not bling.
whats with all the mac people. apple is simply a company that makes bad computers and overcharges for them to take advantage of stupid people. their operating system which many claim is "better UI" is not that, it is simply an operating system for people who dont know how to use a computer. if you are going to spend so much money on a computer at least buy one that is actually practical.
In Response to SRDs post. I agree corp. users are very hard on laptops but I work for a small startup, so I made it clear that if you abuse your laptop you will unable to work while it goes out for repair. The guys who work here are very careful with there machines. But more to the point, every single laptop I have bought from Fujitsu has been repaired at least twice. We purchased three of the Celsius Mobile H laptops. Each one of those has been back to Memphis four times each. Plus they have all had their batteries replaced at least three times. To be fair when I called third level support, they would just send new batteries, but I think that is kind of admitting guilt since they are very expensive. I'm just writing because my experience with Fujitsu is the worst I have ever had with a with a hardware manufacturer.
If only it came in translucent, candy-colored plastic, then the Apple fanboys would like it.
You can already buy this.
It's called the Sony SZ 160 Premimum and it sells for about $2500 less.

#12 with all the spelling errors, would I TRUST your judgement on a PC?
-But I did say I wouldnt be a Fujitsu, overpriced.
#17 You are a Macgeek to the fullest extent. You say better, better, better...(Better in your eyes)BUT NOONE uses Macs for such apps.
Mac is a toy for most of the intended audience - home consumers. Anyone "pro" might be owned be artists and musicians, which who are on a whole, hobbyists, and not professionals.
#20 that is so old, be original.
#22 you are correct, Mac is simplified for people that get viruses and worms on PC and think they are totally protected now that they use a Mac.
"For the love, how did a product manager justify nearly a full 5 times the cost of my Toshiba Tecra S2?!"
settsu, I was just about to say the exact same thing!
>Here we go again! all the apple geeks are on the scene once again. I'm getting pretty fed up with all this apple garbage on this website. I love this website ... but with all these trolls it's almost impossible. Nobody is talking about apple in this new article where did apple come from???
Well, there is a very good reason: today was the day Apple would announce new/updated products, so obviously a lot of Mac users happen to be checking this site. That picture has a very "black iPod" look, so for a second many thought "Is that the new iBook?" and posted based on the realization it wasn't.
Back on topic: nice machine, just waaay too expensive, particularly for a 12 inch machine with integrated graphics (Intel 945). Interesting tidbit: it has an integrated fingerprint scanner.
hi, i'm a troll. spam me please: kamilmytnik@gmail.com
Hating windows has become so cliche. This isnt the 1990s...half the windows jokes dont even make sense anymore, Honestly I havent had a bluescreen since Ive started using XP(maybe even 2000 but I'm not going to bet on it) and I do a fair amount of .Net, 3D modeling and GIS. Whats there not to like about the XP interface?
17. "whats with the mac geeks? Yes this is a pro notebook for business use not a toy. lol"

Welcome to the real world, friend:
Better word processor/presentation software than Windows - Yes, because everyone I know complains about attending Keynote presentations. Sorry, Powerpoint owns the market. Jobs was a genius for allowing MS to conquer yet another branch of the business market.
And what word processor do you use? I use Word, also the market leader because of ease of use. I understand that there is a Mac version that Apple begged MS to continue.
Better web browser than Windows comes with - And Firefox is better that IE and Safari. Nice qualified language, fanboy
Better security than is standard on Windows - I have a hardware firewall built into the router and I have anti-virus software that runs and updates in the background. Never been hacked. Never had a virus. Once again, I like that you realized you had to qualify your language to make your faulty claim.
Simpler UI than windows - to you perhaps. To someone who either has minimal computer exposure or has been using Windows for a decade, your anecdotal claim based upon your own personal experience is worthless.
All better for business use - The best thing for business use: affordability. Take 100 workstations and do the math. And that's just the hardware cost. XP licenses are cheaper because you get the point upgrades for free (SP1,SP2). What's Apple charging for point upgrades now? $100 a piece? Do you get bulk discounts? Sorry, from a cost benefit analysis, MS wins.
Re: The Siemens book - aimed at a prestige class. As far as other Lifebook's go, mine is 2 years old, has a P4 2.8 chip and still gets 2.5 hrs. of life on a charge. Not bad for $1,500 in 2004.
£350
Toshiba Tecra a3x BRAND NEW !!!!
DOTN MISS OUT
BETTER THAN THIS FUjITSU

The Fujitsu in question runs the operating system used by at least 95% of the world. It runs literally thousands more programs than OSX including applications in my profession that are not available for the mac.
Apple fan boys, please go back to your rooms in your parent's house, or go back to class in your middle school or do whatever you do that passes for a life.
Ahh, religion is alive and well on the Internet—it's just been transferred to Mac vs. Windows. Nothing like a death match between True Believers...
someone is waitinmg for a mac, when the world is uding Windows -- I am NOT in love with windows, but if 99 % of the world and 95 + % of the U.S.A. uses windows, mac's are therefore a small niche -- kind of like driving a 1962 Peugot -- might be wonderful, as a stand alone, but compatible parts {read 'programs'} are VERY tough to come by, and are not cheap
Hi chaps, we were sent four of them - I have one(hehehe)...the 3g software is a bit funky and needs to be restarted every time you want to make a voice call but the positional mic software is ace.
The finish is great and the thing has immediate "wow" factor. It does, however, generate a lot of unwanted attention. On the train, if I just want to get some work done, I get people asking what it is...and daren't get it out of my bag on the late trains...lol.
Comments about the finish attracting finger prints is true, my children like drawing in fingermarks on it, when people touch it it gets covered (people loooove stroking it), BUT....none of this matters, as the nice people from FJS provide a cleaning/polishing cloth. ACE.
Really pleased with it.
